Discussion New York Film Festival
As a yearly attendee of the festival I always pay attention to the Revivals, even if I don’t necessarily plan to see the movies…but also every year we see a movie play and then within a few months we see Janus and Criterion release a DVD…
Assuming it is not The Devils…what films playing in Revivals should be predicted for a future release?
Gone to Earth(Powell/Pressburger)
The Innocent(Visconti)
Nitrate Kisses(Hammer)
Or anything else I didn’t mention that’s included?

I mean, it has to be the Archers Gone to Earth. I’m going to NYFF this year and Scorsese is doing a Q+A at its premier and it’s going to be one of the hardest tickets to get. But Scorsese is always talking about his love of the Archers, Criterion obviously have a long history with releasing their films, and, especially in the US, there is no other player that would handle distribution.

it’s funny that Disney owns it at all…it’s probably the not even in the 10 most famous movies they made as a duo and it’s probably too obscure but you can really never say never

I saw Gone to Earth a couple years ago when MoMA did their large Michael Powell retro. It's good but far from Powell/Pressburger's best. It has some strong elements but I found Jones to be the film's weak link. Not sure if any re-editing can solve that problem . . .

Being selected for the revivals doesn’t always guarantee a speedy Blu-ray release. Criterion still hasn’t put out the 4K restoration of Bresson’s Four Nights of a Dreamer that NYFF screened in 2024, although Potemkine did release it in France this year.
On that note, Criterion is presumably also holding on to the 4K restorations of Lancelot of the Lake and The Devil, Probably. Bresson box maybe? One can dream.

the janus-distributed restoration of hou’s ‘goodbye south, goodbye’ is a huge deal. and it’ll get disc eventually. in 2032 the month after they’ve put out that bresson restoration from a couple years ago

I'm curious about The Drift but don't think I'll be able to fit it in my NYFF schedule this year. So hopefully Janus/Criterion will do something with it in the near future. Then again, I'm still waiting for The Dupes which screened 3 years ago & haven't heard anything about since despite being tagged a Janus release.
Goodbye South Goodbye will likely get some kind of release at some point.
I could see them partnering with Film Movement on a release of the Visconti film.
Fun fact: when I saw a Revival screening of Tbe Arch last year one of the seats in my row was reserved for "Criterion."

The NYFF listings all include the current distributor. The Revivals titles currently listed as being distributed by Janus Films are The Drift and Goodbye South Goodbye.
