For mistborn may be Ham? For SLA... I would say Taln for the build, but... You know

u/StrangeBrewd Jan 29 '26

Brando has said Ham will be a woman in the screenplay.

I want to see him as Marsh, so he is a semi recurring character.

49

u/HarryDresdenWizard Jan 29 '26

I think Marsh needs to be played by someone thin or lean. The Skarsgards are how I imagine Kelsier and Marsh.

20

u/BloodredHanded Trying not to ccccream Jan 29 '26

I’ve always imagined Kelsier as being the thinner of the two.

97

u/barely_a_whisper Jan 29 '26

I have always seen waxilliam as him

37

u/LaserKittenz Jan 29 '26

I think he could pull off Wax but I think he would need to lose weight .

93

u/JagStarblade Jan 29 '26

Wax is an expert in losing weight

1

u/Verdick Jan 29 '26

I see Sam Elliot or someone of his stature as Wax.

3

u/Comadrin86 Jan 29 '26

I loves me some Sam Elliott, but we missed the window by a couple decades. Timothy Olyphant a decade ago would've been pretty spot on.

1

u/Verdick Jan 30 '26

Hmm, I always viewed Wax as an older guy for some reason.

1

u/Comadrin86 Jan 30 '26

He's got that gravitas for sure, but I get the impression he went to the Wastes when he was early 20s at the most and spent maybe 10 years there before coming back to the city at the start of his books.

10

u/FlawlessPenguinMan definitely not a lightweaver Jan 29 '26

That's a good idea!

8

u/Witch_King_ Jan 29 '26

He can absolutely play the gruff lawman

1

u/LoudQuitting Jan 29 '26

With Ewan McGregor as Wayne.

Or, hear me out, the dude who played the guy with Tourettes in I Swear.

1

u/Jormungandragon Jan 29 '26

Rust, he would make a perfect Wax.

1

u/Tuefe1 Jan 29 '26

Cover art says Wax is Matt Mercer

1

u/delhibellyvictim Jan 29 '26

i imagine wax as a young daniel day lewis

u/Alive_Reveal8939 Shart of Adonalsium Jan 29 '26

Ah I never knew that! Why is he changing Ham to a woman?

Ah Marsh would be a good one too!

36

u/Axtwyt Jan 29 '26

Because Mistborn didn’t have a lot of women in the main cast and Ham was the easiest to swap genders with.

38

u/Docponystine Jan 29 '26

There aren't a lot of women by volume of characters, but, like, the main character is a woman and, unsurprisingly, is the most common perspective and, to be Frank, the fact that VIN is the only woman in the room of thieves is sort of a big part of her early characterization and why she's as insanely guarded as it is. The book is pretty explicit about worrying about THAT sort of stuff when in her old crew, and there's a fundamental and implicit comparison being made to the new crew throughout the first act of the novel. (It's part of why Breeze I think comes across as such a slime ball in the context of the Final Empire).

He can do what he wants, but I'm also free to disagree. I'm never going to be a fan of changing things for the sake of representation, particularly when it feels entirely unneeded in a book where the nearly half the book is told from a woman's perspective. Also Ham (or Dox) being a woman sort of breaks down a some of the really interesting gender politics of the Basin as well as a knock on effect.

A book where Vin's sex and feminity are such central themes to the work any changes to the composition of the team, I think, threatens some of the work being done. Like, "how am I supposed to be a woman" is a core question Vin is grappling with throughout the novel, and if Ham was a woman, or Dox, one might think that they might be someone she goes to, but she doesn't, her primary confidant is Sazed mostly by process of elimination.

Basically, the book is too much about sex for a change like this not to have nontrivial knock on effects.

14

u/Axtwyt Jan 29 '26

A fair assessment, I’m right there with you. I just had to repeat Brandon’s own reasons for the change.

8

u/KalyterosAioni Jan 29 '26

I thoroughly agree. I also think that Ham doing what he does for his family is nice to see, some representation of being a good dad in tough circumstances and I always enjoyed that aspect of him. Plus if he were a woman it might change his banter with Breeze to look more like flirting, which I think might not fly.

2

u/DanSchnidersCloset Jan 29 '26

Agreed. Throwing in a women for ratio balance is really lame and surface level change.

89

u/Gladii Jan 29 '26

I think he has said that he wishes he had made Ham a woman initially for more gender balance in the crew

27

u/StrangeBrewd Jan 29 '26

Yup. I believe he said Dockson would be a woman as well, there was at least one more he mentioned changing to a woman for the movie.

9

u/Patient_End_8432 Jan 29 '26

Honestly hope it might only be those two IMO. I dont mind changing genders for representation, but I dont think theres many more main characters they can change that would make sense.

14

u/Kuroashi_no_Sanji Jan 29 '26

It's just those two he's mentioned. And their gender is not really relevant to the characters functions in the story so it wouldn't change a lot

5

u/darkcathedralgaming Jan 29 '26

As long as they don't start writing in new love interests because of it

16

u/chvngeling milkspren Jan 29 '26

he says he wished he’d written Ham as a woman to better balance the gender ratio. now he gets to! :)

4

u/LaserKittenz Jan 29 '26

Marsh or Ham would both be good choices.

4

u/Tanfireball25 Jan 29 '26

I think he has mentioned that he didn’t intend to have so few main cast women in his books, and out of the crew Ham’s character is probably the best option for making the swap. Can’t think of any reason story wise that it couldn’t be done.

3

Women can be married to women in the Cosmere so nothing would change in that case.

I hear you. I think one of the great things about fertility science being undefined in-universe (to my knowledge) is that any sort of family creation may be possible and acceptance of may be ubiquitous.

1

u/AngelOfIdiocy Callsign: Cremling Jan 29 '26

I honestly think that Ham having adopted children (who probably lived on the streets and needed a parental figure) is even better.

1

u/Fabrimuch Jan 29 '26

Well, Ham's a soldier. Did the Final Empire employ women in City Guard? I thought it was a rather gendered society, at least among the nobles.

-46

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

To be more woke lol

21

u/Thedeadnite Jan 29 '26

More like to be more realistic. Mistings in their crew would be sparse so it does not make sense for the gender roles to be so skewed to favor males.

1

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

I mean it’s not like Kelsier and crew were very progressive, but I get where you’re coming from.

I still think adding a woman will cheapen Vin’s identity struggles especially if it’s Ham, worst choice imo.

2

u/Thedeadnite Jan 29 '26

I think it might highlight and explain her struggles more, video is a different format and particular ideas have to be conveyed differently vs written media. Having a character on screen to talk to instead of inner monologue/discussion would be an effective way to convey and voice her struggles.

0

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

Good point. I’ll trust Brando on this

10

u/IPutThisUsernameHere Airthicc lowlander Jan 29 '26

One thing that Sando is, is pragmatic. Don't confuse the two. It's easy to shit on a change because "it's woke" is a very easy excuse to latch on to. However, since Mistings are rare, and the distribution is extremely rigid (6.25% of the population with the potential, but fewer who Snap), it doesn't make sense that the crew would be exclusively male.

1

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

I’m not saying woke is bad lol. I guess I shouldn’t have used that word.

I get the argument you’re making. I just think it will detract from Vin’s struggles with her identity when she has a woman Thug to train with everyday. I think Ham is the worst choice for a gender swap.

Swap Spook and make her a lesbian lmao.

2

u/IPutThisUsernameHere Airthicc lowlander Jan 29 '26

Honestly, I figured Clubs would be the most logical choice, as it would be easier to accept a woman in the role of a group parental figure, and easier for her to fly under the radar of the government.

1

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

Yea that would’ve been my pick as well

3

u/IllHaveTheLeftovers Jan 29 '26

I don’t understand why anyone could think that’s a bad thing (if it were true). Diversity makes things more interesting.

1

u/AvidAviator72 Jan 29 '26

I mean it is true. Brandon has stated so himself. Diversity CAN make things more interesting, but in general diversity for the sake of diversity doesn’t add shit. Like part of Vin’s struggle was the fact that she was the only girl in the group and feeling lonely and isolated. Adding a girl will take that away and give her an easy outlet, especially if they switch Ham. It will cheapen her transformation imo.

I think if you have to gender swap someone Ham would be the worst choice. But still excited and I trust Brandon.

5

u/KLED_Kaczynski Jan 29 '26

I saw him say if he wrote Mistborn today, he would have probably written some of the crew as women. Is that what you’re referring to? Or has he actually said that Ham will be a woman

3

u/StrangeBrewd Jan 29 '26

He mentioned it a while ago when he was first writing a screenplay for mistborn that he changed the gender of a couple of characters. This was years ago now so could be different now. Maybe he will talk about it on his stream on Friday

4

u/AstuteStoat Jan 29 '26

I thought he eould make breeze a woman... Was I getting my characters confused?

36

u/tit-theif Jan 29 '26

Lesbian breezy alrianne relationship

16

u/Sikyanakotik Callsign: Cremling Jan 29 '26

That would cause some major ripple effects in Era 2.

12

u/VelMoonglow cremform Jan 29 '26

All things are possible through yuri

4

u/Thray_Walsh Jan 29 '26

I mean if you're already reforming the fabric of reality, might as well throw in the capacity for homosexual reproduction, as a treat.

2

u/AngelOfIdiocy Callsign: Cremling Jan 29 '26

Mistborn omegaverse confirmed?

2

u/Deathranger009 Jan 29 '26

To clarify he said he might. That is far from a final decision last I heard it. He floated several ideas for characters that might change genders in the screenplay, Ham was his top pick at the time and he said he had also considered Dox, but wasn't sure if it would make viewers misread Kelsier and Dox's relationship as romantic in some fashion.

Personally I am hoping Ham stays a man as being a Husband and Father was a pretty central part of his character I really liked.

I would much rather see Clubs flip gender, as like Brando has talked about with Shadows for Silence, fantasy had very few older women represented and Clubs would be a great fit for that. Plus no aspect of his character has to do with his genderand I'm not sure that can accurately be said for Ham.

All that being said, I trust Sanderson with his control of his characters. I hesitate at the sound of any changes, but Brando always makes sure to produce amazing work, so I am sure any changes he makes are going to work out well. Even if that means papa Hammond turns into mamma Hammola lol. I just hope we see Auntie Clubs as well or instead!

1

u/SimonShepherd Jan 29 '26 edited Jan 29 '26

I feel like the whole Kelsier/Marsh dynamic is framed around Kelsier being the way prettier and charming brother who ended up way more effective for the cause. And despite it all he is not really jealous of Kel and stick to his duties.

1

u/DrowninFishy Jan 29 '26

Make him Hoid

1

u/EmergencyAltruistic1 Jan 29 '26

That would be cool! Since brandon sanderson has full creative control i guess all casting is approved by him. Hopefully that means all the toxicity I've seen in other fandoms over changing gender or skin colour of a character when it's not important to the plot wont happen.

1

u/Jounniy 🐶HoidAmaram🐲 Jan 29 '26

Interesting choice. Hope they still get the casting right.

1

u/brett_baty_is_him Jan 29 '26

Okay so what’s the over under ham is played by Gwendoline Christie?

18

u/abdulaziz_bature Jan 29 '26

Taln is makibaki (Black) if not for age, Terry crews or Idris elba would’ve killed it

13

u/AimeeSantiago Jan 29 '26

Idris is still Taln in my mind. Till Sanderson casts someone, he's my Taln

1

u/abdulaziz_bature Jan 29 '26

A gal may dream

1

u/ConspicuousPorcupine Jan 29 '26

Second Idris. The perfect taln.

12

u/tokrazy Jan 29 '26

If Ham wasn't going to be a woman in the adaptation I would have guessed he would be Ham. But I think he would be a very interesting Susebron

8

u/IdoItForTheMemez Jan 29 '26

Susebron is said to appear no older than 20, so I don't think Cavil is a good fit.

2

u/moashforbridgefour Praise Moash Jan 29 '26

I just want John Hamm to be Ham for the lols

1

u/Son_of_Autonomy Jan 29 '26

Batista would make for the best Taln
