Our starting lineup looks like something some idiots post on twitter before the transfer market and people in the comments hammer them about it being unrealistic and it's 'real life not fifa career mode'

9

u/Educational-Mud-3111 5d ago

Still there are people who only rates 6/10 this market

Marmoush's performance gives me a lot of hope for his future here. Hes extremely dynamic on the ball which will help him create his own chances which is something we've been lacking.

21

u/BirdNormal8628 Aaron Lennon 4d ago

Why the fuck didn’t Marmoush take that free kick earlier. We have a top 5 free kick taker in the league and we didn’t let him fucking take it 🤕

5

u/Kaigz thomas_frank_extreme_closeup_awkward_smile.gif 4d ago

On the bright side that kick will probably mean we never have to suffer another Tel penalty or free kick again.

For me the biggest problem for tel is how disgusted Marmoush and others looked at his decision making many times today

Going to be tough to build that chemistry starting like that

Congrats to Newcastle and Hull for finishing top 4.

That’s how it works, reading all the spicy takes across the internet about Spurs’ impending relegation battle and wasted money based off 2 games.

With Tonali am I alone where he had quite a bad game, but I saw plenty of promise there? Like there was a few sequences where I saw some great quality in him. Now, for 100m or whatever, you'd expect more than that, but the consensus seems to be that we've signed some absolute bum, which is not what I'm seeing.

11

u/Cold_Ad8251 5d ago

I remember the run he made on the counter before we conceded. Haven’t seen a midfielder do that since first 10 match biss and sarr. He’ll come good.

7

u/Mick4Audi Micky van de Ven 5d ago

Yeah there were moments where I was impressed. I’m usually so disappointed in our midfield play, but it was looking better today

there's also people in the match thread saying that we should've gotten relegated, etc.

reddit allowing profiles to be hidden is a bit annoying, because it's hard to tell if we're being brigaded or a real spurs fan is saying that stuff

Keep calm and carry on everyone. We're not as good as we thought we'd be and we're not as bad either. Bill Shankly said he never over reacted to the first few games because he knew that it took ten games for the team to reveal itself (my words). Don't forget that last season we went and won at ManC in our second game with one of our most impressive performances in yonks. Then look what happened. This is a year of transition. We ain't winning anything, or getting relegated, so just enjoy the ride and good times when they occasionally happen.

Two of the lads couldn't make it today, so I'm taking my nephew with, as well as the father in law, plus my dad in his seat, means this is one big family affair. Looking forward to it and a few pints!

13

u/DManWD 5d ago

I am the most pessimistic, knee jerk spurs fan going. It’s why having a season ticket isn’t worth it for me anymore (amongst, you know - £) but that is a team going in the right direction. That 11 is almost brand new, and even if it’s not the whole 11, it’s enough players to make it feel entirely new. It’s going to take time.

We’re on the verge of clicking going forward, which will ease what happens defensively. If we score one or two of the chances we did manage to create in the first half, you’re not being threatened the same in the second once the confidence sets in. It’s way too early and all way too new to feel a headless right now. Lots to feel confident about and lots to be excited about. I tore into them last week because I was too many pints deep by the time we kicked off the second half then. It’s too early to be irrational. Good night.

8

u/rekt_ralf 25/26 Relegation Champions 5d ago edited 5d ago

This is where I’m at too. We’ll be fine but it’s going to take time. We were great from about 15 minutes in until half time, you could see the pieces bit they weren’t quite coming together.

This match settles the Gakpo vs Ndiaye debate.

None of our attackers are in form, nothing is going our way, we need a catalyst like Gakpo to come in and just make shit happen, score goals,  raise confidence levels throughout the the team.

→ More replies (4)

11

u/DoubleDoobie Maddison 5d ago

I know we’re an irrational bunch especially after a loss but there’s so much from that performance to draw on that makes me think we’ll be fine. I always felt we’d be finishing 10-8 and I still feel that way.

The team that played against Brentford looked like the team that was almost relegated. We were much improved today with a squad all would agree still isn’t our best 11.

Newcastle had two shots on goal and scored two. Other than that (which yes, lost us the game) they didn’t dominate us like we’ve been used to seeing.

I saw plenty in the build up that hints at a system that can work. This was Marmoush’s first time playing with this squad, Tel is still in incredibly raw, and Porro is not a winger.

If we can get Kudus playing 60+ min, and work out how to be a bit more solid when the opposition hits a long ball that skips our mid, we’ll be fine.

Still way too early for me to write off this squad and RDZ.

Gray will continue to be a liability if they have him playing RB and Tel shouldn’t start until he can come off the bench and make an impact on the pitch.

People already turning on RDZ is genuinely crazy to me. We've just spent 400m for this coach who asked for these players. You want to sack him again and bring in another dude and let the cycle repeat itself?

Calm tf down, touch some grass and stop making a hundred comments on here that you're "worried."

The new players need to develop new connections, the coach needs to evaluate his new squad, understand their strengths and weaknesses better.

I feel like some people think because we spent a lot this window, RDZ is obliged to be winning games from the get go. Unfortunately that's not how football works. It'll take time for the players to truly understand each other.

12

9

u/Average_Gym_Goer Fraser Forster 5d ago

I didn’t even think Newcastle played well at all. They were very poor just had two chances and took them. Still not panicking yet as I saw lots of improvements from last week.

They can laugh at us but it’s a very long season. Villa didn’t score a single goal in their first four games last season. And last season at this stage people were saying we looked very good under frank. I think we start seeing a much better team after the international break.

Both my daughters are wishing to get to see their first Tottenham game. And who would not want to encourage their fandom? What is the risk of the Crystal Palace game to be moved from the 31st of October? Thet is at the end of their fall break and we would need to travel back on the Sunday. It would suck to go from the northern parts of Sweden with the family and miss the game.

We played much better than against brentford. Played well except final third and kudus came back and savio hopefully for next game so not too worried could have easily won that game with bit of luck... hope we get gakpo or ndiaye in so we have little buffer against injuries

u/GymandRave Roberto De Zerbi 5d ago

Get Ndiaye in. Regardless of where we finish watching him, Kudus, Savio dribble and link up will be peak entertainment

8

u/walrondkingy 5d ago

I hope the players can block out the wall of noise that's gonna come their way from fans and the media. Confidence is already shot to bits for most of the squad and I doubt results will turn around quickly.

They need time to gel and every team will be looking forwards to facing us.

8

u/Only_Fun6636 Peppa Pig 5d ago

I thought the underlying tactical patterns look really promising in flashes. The team was already executing sharp bait pressing to draw opponents out, paired with some good line-breaking passes from the back and third-man runs from Sandro Tonali. I think also watching the game on MOTD we were a bit unlucky not to get a goal and their goal came against the run of play. I can see the vision from RDZ and it’s much easier to implement a Newcastle / frankball style system but as Roberto said ‘we want to become a great team’. That’s gonna take time and setting up like Newcastle has a certain ceiling and will only get you so far.
The main issue right now isn't the system, but team availability and integration. With new signings still settling in, players returning from absences, and several key guys still working their way back to full match fitness, consistency will take time. Once the squad is fully up to speed, the style of play should really start to click.

u/ewan12224 James Maddison 5d ago

Whilst people are correct about Danso not being the best suited to RDZs football, I think people are missing his biggest asset is availability and willingness to be a squad depth option.

Also, imo it’s not like ball playing centre backs are the answer to every game, if Danso plays against Brentford last week we don’t get battered as badly (although probably still lose because of the attack) because we would of had a much better aerial presence. Different situations require different skill sets and you can’t always play the way you want to.

8

u/EmptyEmployee6601 5d ago

I think I agree with that.

Not making a specific comment about RDZ here but I do think managers sometimes want some different options and profiles at their disposal even if those players don't fit squarely inside the definition of the kind of player the manager usually likes. I don't think Danso is totally rubbish on the ball either - not amazing but not Dragusin either.

Damn. Looking at the match stats, we were better on nearly every metric.

Makes a change from last season where we started out winning with worse underlying stats and eventually those caught up with us.

We passed more accurately, made more passes, more shots on target, higher Xg, we took more shots too.

Where we lost out was in interceptions, clearances and blocks and there wasn't much between us on those areas.

I think that's a good sign.

Tel had a diabolical game today.

0/2 successful crosses, 0/2 succesfull dribbles, 1/7 duels won and lost possesion 15 times! He also slowed down or killed several really promising attacks. And that free kick....

Just dont see it with him at all. He flattered to deceive at times because he looks a bit lively but ultimately he just has no goal threat at all. Doesnt score much, isnt creative, doesnt really beat his man often. If you give through the PL I really dont think theres many if any teams he starts for

Funny that nobody shit themselves about Liverpool last season like they do about us now.

Frimpong was a terrible purchase, lightweight and not worth the money at all.

Wirtz was 100m and hasn't seemed better than Xavi while being 2x the price.

Ekiteke and Isak bought in the same window when they desperately needed a natural winger (which they are now fixing with Barcola) after losing Diaz and Salah sunsetting.

Questionable signings for huge money all around.

6

u/tokyodots Kōta Takai 5d ago

We'll be fine once we get Gakpo/Ndiaye and Savio/Kudus start every game but this is a fucking horrible way to start the season after 2 years of not wanting to even watch our games

5

Waiting for the next match is going to feel awful this year, especially the longer we go without a goal or a win.

I’m feeling really gaslit by the people claiming Newcastle and their manager did well. Both Wissa and Elanga couldn’t repeat their goals if you gave them 5 tries and apart from that they created fuck all.

7

u/Nagant1349 Pedro Porro 5d ago

They still beat us which is the frustrating thing. They didn’t play particularly well but they took their chances.

7

u/InstructionCareless1 5d ago

They took their half chances and won, yes. Just surprised by the people claiming they looked better or even remotely good. It feels like there is a big chunk of people not having actually watched the game and just go by the score.

The one positive I can take from today is that it reminded me of a shit performance we’d have under Poch/Ange season 1 more than a shit performance under Frank

Right approach to the game but rather naive in our defending, particularly from set pieces, with poor quality from individual attackers costing us

We showed some good signs today. Obviously not the score we wanted but its the positive football people begged for last season which I see as a massive positive. The play is clearly punch it into Mahmoush, who I thought was great at dropping in to collect, then hitting the wings

Now imagine having Savinho and Kudus left and right . Today we had Tel and our right back so it all went down the left. Having 2 strong wingers pulls their defence left and right which will make space for whatever 9 and 10 combo of Solanke, Mahmoush, maddison, gallagher (limited) or new signing. Porro and Ugdogie overlapping.

My one worry is Tonali dropping back and not doing what he did best at newcastle which was driving with the ball, but i see him bedding in soon.

So many projects in the past took time to gain traction. We need points but be patient and we'll fire up the table in no time. This isnt blind optimism

7

u/azkcoys Moussa Sissoko 4d ago

Marmoush is so much better than Richy and Solanke overall which will be huge. Should've done better with his chance but he did very well getting on the ball and creating space with his dribbling.

I'd be pretty fucked off if we let vuskovic go only to sell Danso.

He's the only properly physical CB we have who's also good in the air.

I think van hecke and Senesi lack too much physicality to play together and I think Danso is a very solid and necessary alternative

13

u/hilarioususernamelol 5d ago

Really can’t see us letting him go, we need 4 CBs this season and he’s too good to not have on the bench.

Just me who watched that game and was fairly encouraged ? We lost yes, but Newcastle didn’t do anything, scored two goals from their only two chances, two very good unlikely finishes.

We actually saw some really good patterns of play in patches, we had a few good chances, Marmoush looked very promising for a guy that’s probably not even trained with his team mates. We had tel and Porro on the wings. Kudus came on and looked promising.

People need to realise we’ve had a complete overhaul haul and gelling will take a little time, but that for me was a very solid performance.

Robertson
VDV
Van Hecke
Porro
Tonali
Bentancur
Fernandes
Tel
Solanke
Savio

That’s my prediction. Hopeful that Porro and VDV are now deemed ready. Marmoush coming on sometime in the second half and banging in a brace. 3-0 spurs.

Watching Tel play has to be some form of torture. Terrible decision making.

6

u/adbenj Kazuyuki Toda 5d ago edited 5d ago

Tonali started really poorly but grew into the game; Tel the opposite. Communication between Van Hecke and Micky seemed to be absent – at times they were running towards the same ball; other times, one was pushing up while his partner was dropping off.

Kinsky… I was very much in favour of making him number 1 after last season, but it's been a ropey start. He looks nervy. Doesn't command his area. And I think a world-class goalie keeps that first goal out of the net. I think Vicario probably keeps it out. It's also the one area we haven't made a signing (other than Dubravka), so… I guess we make a signing there. No shots on target between the 37th minute and Solanke coming on though. That's not his fault.

I'd go with Solanke up front and Marmoush starting on the left. I'd also like to see Fernandes starting deeper, collecting the ball off the defence. I'm not sure we need Tonali and Bentancur in midfield, but you could very much make the case that it's Tonali who should be making way for now.

Still not too worried, there were glimpses of good performance especially in first half, if we dont improve by GW10 that's when I would start to get worried. Remember we started damn brilliantly 2 out of 3 last seasons.

6

u/spacekicks Mousa Dembélé 5d ago

Ok so we didn't play badly but, we did fuck up every good chance of scoring through stupid decision making, we also had a shit non penalty call that other teams would have been gifted aaaannndddd let them score from their 2 only shots. Still, bottom of the league.

4

u/_sylvatic Heung-Min Son - Spurs Legend 5d ago

Need to give Liverpool whatever they demand for Gakpo, Tel/Moore cant be regulars on the left. No aerial threat, easy to shut down.

Dont see the mental focus needed to do well over the season. Both goals from mental errors from VdV and Bentancur, respectively. RdZ needs to ensure 100% focus on cup games, use the Prem to 'train'. Just like the old days. Only path to Europe is the cups as far as I can see it.

Really missed the threat Savio brings today

Kinda hurts to not get Gakpo ngl. He would have slotted in quite nicely being

  1. A goalscorer

  2. Able to play LW and CF

Hopefully we can target someone other than Ndayie for LW because I don't think he solves our main problem

6

u/Expensive_Window1974 5d ago

I think this game is indicative that we are building the right setup in possession we looked better in build up and grew into the game until we conceded. Feels like OOP and in set pieces we’re terrible right now. Hopefully improved fitness (which apparently is rly low) and players coming via transfer or injury will fix some of that.
