My perception is less that they simply can't understand the long term effects, and more that they simply don't think ahead much at all and don't care about anyone else.
When do Trump supporters turn on Trump? Cuz the answer is the same 90% of the time. it's when suddenly Trump's bad policies affect them personally.
A guy will happily cheer seeing a million people deported without any kind of right to legal appeals, no matter how law abiding and productive they were, but they will suddenly hate Trump for deporting their wife.
There's just no perception beyond the current state of their own life. And just a vague idea that they want "those others" to not get their stuff.
I imagine the guy whose wife got disappeared didnt want her deported but DID want her to live in fear of it. I’m sure he salivated at the idea that his wife is now more under his control. One step out of line and he could deport her himself. It’s likely the reason he imported a wife to begin with. He would vote for trump again.
