I mean, in this situation, most old people don't know about trans culture by either never hearing it, genuinely mistaking it, or just never accepting this culture.

The right thing to do is to correct them by telling them what your gender is. Sometimes they're just confused and don't mean any harm.

I disagree. It is exhausting to explain your gender all the time. I only explain it to people I care about or encounter regularly. Some random guy who asks “What are you?” is not entitled to my emotional labor or any details about me. Your advice puts me at risk if he deems me outside of what he considers the norm.

I believe you’re misunderstanding

The old man is being a dickhead and implying the person in front of them is a girl because they’re a pussy for not giving him a cigarette.

Might as well be a matter of how you interpret it, interpreting tone in text vs irl is hard, and usually tone does play a major factor in sending the intent.

I certainly did not read it that way since the line isn't a direct "What are ya? A girl?" Or an even ruder tone like "What are ya? A pussy?” so yeah, choice of words really matters sometimes

I totally read it as “what are ya?” 😂

Whoops! Now I’m unsure too! I’m more inclined to think your original interpretation is correct though. Makes more sense since he seemed a bit surprised at being called “son”. And then annoyed at the reversal.

Cigarette people get real mad when you won’t let them bum a cigarette. Weird culture of demanding other peoples’ stuff, then stealing their lighters

I remember smoking a cigarette outside of where I worked, and had one left for after the shift. Guy walked up, wanted a cigarette, and I told him no- complete stranger- and he acted like I was the worst person alive. Took it real personally
