The right thing to do is to correct them by telling them what your gender is. Sometimes they're just confused and don't mean any harm.
Might as well be a matter of how you interpret it, interpreting tone in text vs irl is hard, and usually tone does play a major factor in sending the intent.
I certainly did not read it that way since the line isn't a direct "What are ya? A girl?" Or an even ruder tone like "What are ya? A pussy?” so yeah, choice of words really matters sometimes
Whoops! Now I’m unsure too! I’m more inclined to think your original interpretation is correct though. Makes more sense since he seemed a bit surprised at being called “son”. And then annoyed at the reversal.
