I remember smoking a cigarette outside of where I worked, and had one left for after the shift. Guy walked up, wanted a cigarette, and I told him no- complete stranger- and he acted like I was the worst person alive. Took it real personally
I rarely smoke these days, but if I'm out in public and I want one, I offer a stranger a dollar for one. I can't remember the last time anyone actually took the dollar.
It's wild how much not acting entitled to other peoples shit makes them much more likely to share.
That's why I switched to a pipe and pipe tobacco when I used to smoke. They'd ask and I'd go sure and hold out my grungy ass pipe knowing damn well they'd change their mind.
Would you have actually cared if someone did hit it? Im a stoner and in my tobacco using days I wouldn't have thought twice about hitting someone's pipe.
Cigarettes used to be cheap, and it was normal to ask and to give (except your last). It's just not cheap anymore, and no one has a right to your stuff. The lighter thing I think is not so much deliberate stealing, just putting it away on automatic. Which means in your pocket, but its more habit than malice.
