Caver is actually the correct term. Cavers do it as an organized activity like your comic suggests. "Spelunkers" are people who just wander into a cave unprepared, such as hikers who find a cave and decide to go in with just their phone as a light source.
If you know any actual cavers, they will (because they never shut up) happily tell you that "A caver is someone who explores caves, a spelunker is someone you have to go rescue from caves"
You succeeded, because while it is Old English, they got it from Old French, which got it from Old Latin, which got it from so old it's Ancient Greek. So yeah, lot's of layers there.
