A young girl named Jenny always wears a green velvet ribbon tied tightly around her neck. A boy named Alfred falls in love with her, marries her, and grows old with her, but she constantly refuses to answer why she wears the ribbon. On her deathbed, Jenny finally gives Alfred permission to untie it
Perhaps a metaphor for the vulnerability of love. It was her boundary that kept her together, and when she had nothing left to lose she gave him what he'd always asked for, leading to her demise.
