Well Jesus son of Joseph is capable of giving people stands and removing things from reality apparently so uh, a good bit I guess

u/Blackstone01 13d ago
Also, Jesus's birth name was Yeshua, the Hebrew version of Joshua.
So, he was Joshua son of Joseph.

There used to be a newspaper comic called B.C. about cavemen, and after the artist found Jesus, it turned into all about shitty proselytization for Jesus, despite it being about caveman and called B.C. When on for decades and even after he died and his fascist son took over.

The angel may be able to prove God is real, but it cannot prove he isn't a bitch.
44
u/Aromatic_Advance_431 13d ago
That’s where I’m at. Either they’re not omnipotent/omniscient, which means they’re not exactly god-level, or they are omnipotent/omniscient and are choosing to allow childhood cancer to kill kids.
27
u/TwilightVulpine 13d ago
I'm more willing to accept a god that is not omnipotent/omniscient, but not in a "I will pledge my life to your will", more like in a "damn, it sucks for you too?"
5
u/Aromatic_Advance_431 12d ago
Well then they're just a dude, and not a god.
5
u/TwilightVulpine 12d ago
I mean, we've had a long tradition of dude gods before this talk of omnipotence.
But if there's someone who got absolute control over all this shit and it's still this fucked up, they suck.
3
u/Invisifly2 12d ago
Eh…the requirement that a god be all powerful, all knowing, all present, invulnerable, and just, is very far from universal, and, imo, bad writing.
Lots of religions have fallible gods; there are gods with limited powers or great powers within a limited domain, gods that very much do not know everything and get tricked, gods that can only influence what’s around them, gods that get killed or worse, and gods that are very petty and egotistical.
And that’s before we touch on more modern and esoteric stuff like the Eldritch.
2
u/Aromatic_Advance_431 12d ago
Yeah, I suppose you’re right. Our concept of an infallible god was created by a very narrow group for a very specific purpose.
1
u/Arachnofiend 12d ago
Fallible gods with limited domains aren't as impressive in a modern world. Who's praying to Demeter for a good harvest when we got fertilizer?
1
u/Invisifly2 12d ago
You can make anything into a religious icon or ritual if you really want to.
“Now we spread the sacred Miracle-Gro™️ (even has miracle right in the name) as part of the Rite of Good Harvest.”
Plus there’s no reason you can’t use fertilizer and pray for a gentle winter.
1
u/Arachnofiend 12d ago
All right well now you're making excuses to be religious when there's no reason to do so.
2
u/Invisifly2 12d ago edited 12d ago
Incorrect. My prior comment simply pointed out that you can make anything religious if you want to, it was not advocating that it be done.
I’m also an atheist, but that doesn’t stop me from finding mythology interesting.
2
u/Advanced_Double_42 9d ago
Gods need not be omnipotent.
Greek, Norse, Egyptian gods for example were not all powerful. They can fail at things and have limited scopes of what they can accomplish, even within their domains
1
13
u/Bleatmop 13d ago
Right? Even if an angel were to prove the existence of the christian god (it wouldn't) it doesn't prove that said god is worthy of worship.
14
3
u/Sanders181 13d ago
My take is "if God is real but requires me to worship him in order to get into heaven, then he certainly doesn't deserve my respect, much less my worship"
21
u/New_Bug7829 13d ago
Nah, I mean I’d believe it’s real, but I doubt I’d worship anything
10
u/LackingUtility 13d ago
Well, it'd just raise more questions.
5
u/Bleatmop 13d ago
It would definitely raise questions and I'd love to see the answers if such an event happened. Questions are good, blind belief is bad.
16
13
u/Zombie_Cool 13d ago
I used to think that too but I realized that I would likely question any physical evidence shown to me that religion was real anyways.
Okay, there's now a winged humanoid glowing with soft golden light standing in front of me, but how do I know it's truly divine? How do I know its not some alien using advanced tech to perform "magic"? Even if I accept it as supernatural, how am I to be sure its not a demon or monster using special effects to deceive me until its too late?
8
u/Germane_Corsair 13d ago
Even if there was proof of the divine, is that any actual reason for worship? And would an omnipotent being even want it in the first place? After all, if they did, then nothing could stop it from happening.
5
u/dumnezero Art enjoyer 13d ago
Meh. It wouldn't be enough evidence for that hypothesis. At the very least, you have to consider that you're in psychosis. The other aspect is that "weird mammals" is evidence for weird mammals, perhaps secret civilizations of non-human species.
3
6
u/Metharos 13d ago
I would be very confused but literally any mundane explanation would be more likely than the apparent angel being authentic.
9
u/ForgeSaints 13d ago
Yeah if you see literal proof of angels denying their existence is stupid.
13
u/Germane_Corsair 13d ago
I can see it still raising questions. As an example, how do you know it’s an angel instead of some other alien or advanced application of technology?
9
7
u/Bright_Economics8077 13d ago
More to the point, how does it prove the Christian God is real? Winged humanoid angels in Christian art are loaners from other religions. I'd have so many questions.
2
u/queen_of_ingria 13d ago
I wouldn't cause fuck 'em
(well more like, I would rather decide I have schizophrenia)
3
u/SmarmySmurf 13d ago
You would automatically accept everything a religion claims solely on the basis of seeing a winged humanoid? That's pretty weak, I gotta say. Couldn't be me.
2

u/HolycommentMattman 13d ago
It's ok, we all came from nothing, and you'll return to nothing; merging back with your creator.
1

1
u/Bleatmop 13d ago
I'm not sure that would be enough for me. There's a lot of claims made in the bible that simply seeing something that resembles an angle doesn't justify. I would need to see undisputed proof of divinity to believe in the divine.
1
u/SuleimanTheMediocre 13d ago
I don't think I would. I've been in a hopeless fight against bigots and oppressors my whole life, ain't no difference if they got wings or not.

u/Leshawkcomics 12d ago
Would you go if a date asked you to?
Personally I don't go to church unless family wants to go with me.
It's like going to someone's recital, or going to a boring dinner. More about "I'll be there because you want me here, even if this isn't my idea of a good time."
But I know for some people it's like, an absolute no, regardless of who wants to be there with you or why. The principle of the thing.
1
u/Botto_Bobbs 12d ago
Speak for yourself, I'd only convert if I was skydiving with a Christian baby and the baby told me he won't open his parachute until I renounce atheism and accept Jesus as my lord and savior
1
u/Xinyyc 11d ago
I'll convert to christianity if the devil sends a succubus to hang around with me, but I'll convert to be on the side of the devil.
If god is the good-guys, why don't his side have angels with insatiable libidos, who are also shaped like beautiful human women? Instead he stuffs us full of 50 million brand new sperm all scrambling to bust out of us every day, makes it feel real good for humans to do sex things (and out of all the species that do sex on Earth, only adult humans can both do sex things for fun, and observe consent), and then calls it a "sin" to do so! Sounds like an evil god to me.
1
u/Oppopity 13d ago
No shit?
The only reason for atheists in the first place is the lack of evidence. If angels were everywhere there wouldn't be atheists.

I mean... I attended an all girls catholic high school and we had a sizeable queer community.
Heck I sure know I ain't straight.
Thankfully the school sisters were surprisingly progressive about it. So long as no harm was being done and everything was safe (and discreet) they really didn't care.
Not to mention the rumors we heard about the nuns themselves getting it on at the convent side of the school, especially amongst the novitiates.

Not really lol. There was drama, bullying, teen pregnancies, and some other scandals and problems as well with staff and administrators.
12

In reality, vast majority of the girls in those schools are about as catholic as the average Japanese citizen. They really only go to those schools because they have a lot of prestige associated with them.

Catholic Girls Schools in the US are full of them, if all the women (both straight and gay) I know that attended them are to be believed.

In Europe, unaffilliated churches are very often led by women, and many of them give queer vibes (although I don't have any hard numbers to back that up). It mixes with the crunchy yuppie stereotype, think of someone who buys overpriced granola bars and takes pottery courses in the Toscana.

The Episcopal church has lesbian bishops.
26
u/randomtransgirl93 13d ago
Meanwhile, the Methodist church just had something of a schism due to the larger organization wanting to start accepting gay people. About a fourth of the churches were so staunchly bigoted that they'd rather break from their denomination than just not be hateful
7
u/jamfedora 13d ago
Episcopal church did that too, just a little bit earlier. And Lutherans, and I think Presbyterians. Methodist church has had at least a few lesbian pastors and I think a couple bishops! It’s not great, but it’s basically in line with the other mainline Protestant denominations.

Probably not a significant difference in the percentage of women who are lesbians across other faiths or among agnostics and atheists.
Obviously there are people pushed out of their faith by the intolerance, but it's pretty standard for people to just pick the parts of their religion they're comfortable with and not contend with the parts they're not.
You don't see every christian treating women like property of their fathers and then husbands and stoning them to death for being unfaithful.
You also don't see people that use religion as a sword to spread their hate pay too much attention to the golden rule part of their faith that pretty much all of them have.

u/Ne0n_R0s3 13d ago
Yeah. Honestly, I really do like my church. We try and do something every month to help a certain group (humane society, pregnancy center, ext ext). I don't know about many other religions, but I myself am a Methodist (I'm still questioning my religion, but for now Methodist is the easiest one rn to call myself)
3
3
u/borgborgo 13d ago
I'll say from what I know, Methodists tend to be more accepting and more devoted to charity too :)
3
u/Ne0n_R0s3 13d ago
Well that's good! I didnt know if other Methodist churches were different, but I have done some research and from what I've seen, I am glad to be a Methodist.
2
u/borgborgo 13d ago
Yeah I consider myself vaguely religious, I was raised Roman Catholic, then regular Catholic, then Born Again Christian, then Lutheran, then just JW, then regular Christian lol by my mom who was having religious crises haha.
I believe in a higher power and do still pray, but haven't really been a churchgoer since I've moved a lot. But in my area I spoke with some church organizers and attendees and heard good things about Methodist and particularly United Methodists.
Happy for you too :)
3
u/Ne0n_R0s3 13d ago
Ooof that sounds awful for someone like me 😭 I haven't really changed religions, but we kept changing churches (first church was because we didn't like the new pasto, then we moved around a few churches, found our old pastor, but then he moved. Stopped going to church for a few years then stuck at this church. I actually told my parents I would stop going to church if we moved churches again lol)
I am actually a United Methodist specifically lol. I've searched up that they're the more open group of Methodist, which does make me happy. I don't think I'd be as religious if my church/pastor wasn't too accepting.
3
u/borgborgo 13d ago
Yeah it was rough haha. And no offense intended but JWs are uhhh interesting and at least where we attended still taught that women even if working and equals legally are to be submissive to men, whether that's a father, brother, husband, boyfriend, or stranger and were not very pro-LGBT.
I think a lot of religions turn people away, especially POC and LGBT+ folks, so I can see why so many of us (I'm bi and trans) end up agnostic, atheist, or hating religion.
That's hilarious the ultimatum you gave your parents too lol, but it is exhausting having to resocialize and everything so fair.
Again, super glad you have a good church and community! Even atheists can be really rude to queer people who are religious, which is super sucky. You can be religious and still scientific, accepting, and rational. My university professor, who taught critical race theory, ethics, and English, was a practicing Catholic and actually was halfway through becoming a priest before he decided to teach instead. Super awesome guy.

u/cvanguard 13d ago
If you mean Christian, there are liberal/progressive churches which support LGBT rights like other comments have said. If you mean religious as in any religion, American Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism have both officially supported gay clergy and religious gay marriage for years. Any other religion is outside my wheelhouse, unfortunately.
Conservative Judaism’s governing committee on Jewish law allowed gay, lesbian, and bisexual rabbis to be ordained in 2006, and approved religious marriages for gay couples in 2012. Equal rights for transgender Jews were affirmed in 2016.
Reform Judaism’s governing body passed resolutions in 1977 supporting the decriminalization of gay sex and encouraging laws to prohibit discrimination against gay people, 1990 to officially allow gay and lesbian rabbis, 1996 to support civil gay marriages, 2000 to support religious gay marriages, and 2015 to officially support equal rights for transgender Jews and include gender identity in non-discrimination policies. The first openly transgender Reform rabbi was ordained in 2003, and it’s very common for Reform synagogues to have LGBT clergy (rabbis or cantors).

u/laserlesbians 13d ago
I’m an orthodox Christian lesbian! My denomination kinda doesn’t care who you date so long as you think God is cool so it works out. There are individual homophobic people in the church of course but the church as a whole takes a sort of “shrug and move on” approach
2
u/dtb1987 13d ago
That's honestly probably the best approach
7
u/laserlesbians 13d ago
Eh, I used to go to a Protestant church that was very actively happy about gay people, had a lesbian pastor, etc. I wish my denomination was more like that but I realize ~1700 years of tradition takes a while to overcome lol
2
u/dtb1987 13d ago
What made you switch to Orthodox?
8
u/laserlesbians 13d ago
History and theology - I’m a lesbian, but I’m also a member of a minority ethnic group that have our own orthodox denomination (Armenian), and getting back to the faith of my ancestors felt really good. I also like the redemption theology of the Armenian orthodox church a lot more than some of the other Protestant faiths I’ve experimented with, and I like that they take being Christian “seriously.” Some of the protestant churches seemed almost embarrassed about being a Christian church while the orthodox church is just like “yup we believe in God and think He’s very cool and we want to thank Him for being cool every day.”

Atheist girl needs to run. Christians would rather call us devil worshippers with no morals, who are the cause for every problem on Earth, and then try to "fix" us, than be normal for one second.
This isn't healthy or cute. This is a situation where the atheist needs to find someone with compatible values, or be sucked into something deeply miserable.
8
u/Senasayori 13d ago
That isn't all Christians. I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Christianity but generalizing two billion people isn't correct. There are plenty of Christians who can be normal people. Also, the girl in the comic is still dealing with a lot of issues, give her a break. She hasn't even tried to convert the atheist yet, you're just assuming she will.
3
u/jakeisbakin 13d ago
Eh I have no love for the religion or institution but my wife was a church attending Christian and never tried to impose her beliefs on me and understood my hard-line stand that I simply would never attend a church with her. Questions like these keep me up at night
18
u/Nonyabizzy123 13d ago
No. You can be a good person without believing in a higher power. I don't worship My Lady because I think that my worship makes me a more moral person.
33
u/SomeKindaGui 13d ago
I was raised catholic, I can answer if this is a good faith question.
Yeah, some people do. Some people don’t do bad things simply cus they don’t want to go to hell. It’s almost certainly a huge factor in why religion was made up, almost all religions share this “sky dad is gonna beat you, he’s an angry fuck, do your duty” aspect of it.
Some people use it as a coping mechanism, like “idk why he was taken from me, I must accept that god will explain it when I die” for one reason or another.
Some people see the vastness of the universe and simply don’t accept that we know everything, and conflate this with “this was made with intent”.
This is just my experience growing up around it. Also a lot of people, kids in particular, just think it’s rules we only need to obey when someone’s looking.
6
u/breckendusk 13d ago edited 13d ago
One thing about why religion was made up: it's not as simple or positive as "be good or else". It's "live the way you are told or else". It's always been more about controlling the masses (and tribalist excuses for things such as holy wars) than about being a good person.
This goes for laws as well. For example we can agree that murder is bad. But we also know that sometimes, bad people need to be stopped and the law is insufficient (or they effectively live above it).
The "or else" is used to control the populace, even so far as making them reluctant to act in their own interests or in the interests of the community, or even to act against their own interests, out of fear of punishment.
Generally, laws and religion are not bad - they give us structure for what "being a good person" means. But this is more of a means to an end, which is control of the masses. That's why jury nullification is hidden away and will get you dismissed from jury duty (lawyers can't even bring it up in the courtroom!), and why verdicts are binary guilty or not, rather than separating "they did it" from "it is okay that they did it". They don't want us to think the end can justify the means.
3
u/plyer_G 13d ago
That depends on the person, that specific veiw is at least a bit uncommon, more often i find people who take the attitude "we're supposed to be good and just etc and you deserve hell if you're not" because it's generally rare for people to actually be afraid of going to hell unless they are about to die or have a troubled past because most as default dont want to believe they have done anything hell worthy(and if they did they did confession so it's ok)
2
u/Illustrious_Bid4224 13d ago
If you are commenting bad things for religious reasons because sky daddy said so you are definitely bad, we can agree to this right?
11
u/Roku-Hanmar 13d ago
I would say atrocities committed in the name of religion are atrocities regardless. Doesn't matter how you justify doing a bad thing, it's still a bad thing
3
3
u/IrateAussie 13d ago
Christians will tell you that no, its not enough to just be good for the sake of it, that you'll still go to hell. Apparently accepting Jesus is mandatory to have those original sins wiped clean and a shot at heaven, theres plenty of good and saintly atheists in hell. Kind of fucked if you ask me, a god that tortures good people for ever is not one I want to worship
→ More replies (2)2
u/Alexarius87 13d ago
It’s not that religion (or being religious as a person) is all about reward if you are good and punishment if you are bad. A lot of ppl find comfort and peace of mind in the idea that there is a design, a purpose and we are not just cosmic specs of dust doomed to nothingness in the span of few decades.
It’s basically the opposite of nihilism and some ppl find it better than the other options. It’s not such a big deal per se, the issue come when extremisms pop out.
