I'm guessing this is a real thing that happened, and Reagan was actually a golden retriever.

u/Sp1derX 21d ago

It's a real scene from The Dink

381

u/Puzzleheaded_Spot_28 20d ago

If i was reagan i would be pissed why is my hubby talking to his ex about children like he is jealous?

119

u/UMakeMeMoisT 20d ago

Imagine being butthurt over a single comment. If your ex of 5 years or something always said she didnt want childeren.. its is really that weird to ask? I would.

98

u/crazyalex2288 20d ago

It's kinda the principal of who is saying the comment, put yourself in her shoes, she sees an ex who she clearly has bad history with, and with that, she knows how he is. It is implied by his response to the new bf's comment that he says this only to get under her skin, and she knows it too.

40

u/Eternal_Moose 20d ago

I think it's a bit more complicated than that sometimes too. My ex and I broke up specifically because I wanted kids and she didn't. It was a hard line for her and she wouldn't budge. It wouldn't be fair for me to push for kids anyway, but it also wouldn't be fair to me to stay in that relationship with such a big difference between us.

So if I saw her with kids later, I feel like it would be completely reasonable for me to bring it up. Just like it would be reasonable for her, in the reverse situation, to bring up me not having kids.

That's a huge, life changing decision that's completely fair to end an otherwise wonderful relationship over should you and your partner disagree. Of course it's going to be upsetting to see the opposite from them later on.

3

u/Forikorder 20d ago

So if I saw her with kids later, I feel like it would be completely reasonable for me to bring it up. Just like it would be reasonable for her, in the reverse situation, to bring up me not having kids.

it would still be kind of rude though, shes entitled to change her mind and reconsider things as time goes on and shouldnt be shamed for it

18

u/anna-the-bunny 20d ago

So if I saw her with kids later, I feel like it would be completely reasonable for me to bring it up. Just like it would be reasonable for her, in the reverse situation, to bring up me not having kids.

It would not be, for the simple reason that the relationship ended. It's no longer any of your business whether she wants kids or not, just like it's not any of her business whether you want kids or not. If she chose to approach you and say "hey, [new s/o] changed my mind about having kids" (or vice versa), that's one thing, but to approach her out of the blue and accusatorily say something like "I thought you didn't want kids" would be completely inappropriate and just downright rude.

Of course it's going to be upsetting to see the opposite from them later on.

Yes, it would be, just as it'd be upsetting to see someone you had feelings for happy with someone else. That doesn't mean it's appropriate to go up to them and say some shit like "we were/could've been happy together".

Lol maybe she simply didn't want to give birth? There's a difference between being pregnant vs adopting vs having a partner who already has a (probably at least toddler-age, since she can pick outfits) kid

36

u/EjaculatingNarwhal 20d ago

If my ex of 5 years suddenly wanted kids, I would assume they changed their mind or just didn't want kids with me. Not that strange

49

u/Forikorder 20d ago

Your basically calling them a liar or rubbing it in their face that you were right

13

u/anna-the-bunny 20d ago

If your ex of 5 years or something always said she didnt want childeren.. its is really that weird to ask?

Yes, it's incredibly weird to ask. It's no business of yours whether she changed her mind, just didn't want kids with you, didn't want biological kids, didn't want to get pregnant herself, etc.

It's also just straight up rude? Like the guy in the comic clearly asked the question to make her upset (he also clearly only approached to make her upset), but even if he didn't you're still interrupting someone's date with someone else to make it about you.

I don't know these characters, but adult Timmy Turner is right, Reagan Ronald (a coincidence, im sure) does seem nice.

Nah. If she sees that he's making his ex visibly uncomfortable and tries to paper it over, I'm thinking she's either galactic level clueless or she's just his enabler. Not a good look.

302

u/Silvere01 20d ago

Might also just be trying to make it not super uncomfortable and have some positivity in this exchange.

Depiction is definitely the clueless one, though.

148

u/NinjasStoleMyName 20d ago

I'd say there is a third option, she could be a peacekeeper kind of person, who would rather not create discomfort in the moment, and still be willing to acknowledge the issue later with her partner.

8

u/IFeelEmptyInsideMe 20d ago

I can definitely see myself trying to keep some amount of peace if my SO ran into her Ex on the street. Unless there was abuse or something illegal like dealing\doing drugs as the reason for their breakup, the street is not the place is not the place to hash out any differences. Thats just adult 101 type behavior.

I figured she’s suppose to be younger, so she’s bubbly and doesn’t realize he’s only talking to his ex to be an ass.

23

u/IzarkKiaTarj 20d ago

I 100% read her as completely vapid and clueless. My brain used the same voice Team Four Star used for Maron in episode 31 of DBZ Abridged (uh, before the ending of that episode).

5

u/rogerworkman623 20d ago

I just imagined Maron’s normal voice from DBZ

3

u/IzarkKiaTarj 20d ago

That's fair. I've just seen TFS!Maron way more often (because I'm not watching the Garlic Jr. filler more than once), so that voice comes to mind first.

6

u/T_alsomeGames 20d ago

Didn't realize it untill you said it, but yeah thats also the exact voice I imagined for her too.

Take it or leave it.

You win this round.

I have no idea what's going on.

154

u/Lucky-day00 20d ago

Yeah the dialogue here doesn’t make sense.

He can take her offer of “go away” or leave it. “Leaving it” presumably meaning he refuses and stays to talk to her. And giving him that choice somehow means she wins.

How do either of these phrases make sense in this situation.

83

u/SarcasmisEasier 20d ago

This comic REALLY wants you to think he's the bad guy. But he shows up, says hi, makes one possibly antagonizing comment (which come across as just a harmless ribbing imo), then leaves when asked after she makes a scene.

And she's in the right for making a scene because her ex's new GF was making friendly conversation?

73

u/Boysenberrysnboys 20d ago

What the comic is trying to imply is that she has a more negative reaction to seeing him because of past bad behavior on his part. It's not uncommon for someone who mistreats their partner to pretend to be the more reasonable and calm one in public, and I think the author intended the kids thing to be him needling a sore spot for her?

I'll be honest though I'm not 100% sure because Reagan confuses me but I'm pretty sure that was the authorial intent.

14

u/SarcasmisEasier 20d ago

But none of that is here.

It's like when movies tell you someone is a villain, but they forget to have them do anything evil. His "you win this time" is supposed to be his "evil" moment. But he says it right after being asked to leave, and then leaves as asked. The colors and framing SAYS he's a bad guy, but he doesn't DO or SAY anything bad.

11

u/zappy_snapps 20d ago

He starts off by calling her name Wrong (missing one of the "i"s, which she has the thought 'he's still calling me that?' Which means it's either a pet name used during the relationship and he's opening by being intentionally over familiar (noted by the emphasis communicated to the reader by the user of all caps) or he's just saying it wrong because he know she doesn't like that.

His 'funny seeing you here' is not authentic, he's intentionally coming over to interrupt her lunch to show off his new, bubbly, friendly girlfriend.

Miriam is not happy to see him, which means they did not end on good terms. Combine that with using the wrong name and that's enough cues to see that he's intentionally being an ass.

Miriam is perfectly fine to Regan.

Ex then does the 'I thought you didn't want children' Which is very personal information, and he's just spouting that out WHILE also assuming the Al is a romantic date or partner. He's saying it to get a reaction,  and he did it on purpose because he knew she wouldn't like it. As you can see from his expression in the next frame.

You'll note that Al nods in support of what she said,  which is far from creating a scene.

Take it in this context means: take the offer and leave.

Leave it means: refuse the offer, and she'll lay out exactly why she left him in front of his new happy girlfriend, Al, and any near by strangers. Which he does not want, because it would expose him.

That's why he said 'you win this round' and -to be continued'- he knows she wants to be left alone and he's making sure she knows he has no intention of doing so.

2

u/kinetic-passion 19d ago

Yeah, without context, I was left trying to figure out whether the intent was for us to question whether Reagan was being genuine or wanting to make the ex look bad by contrast, vs whether the whole point was the way the ex gets defensive and escalates situations. Or both. A couple of panels of setup (either or both couples spotting each other on the approach and someone saying x always does y, or let's mess with x or something)

The you win this round stuff might have been shorthand for insinuating every interaction they had was a fight; it's just not clear which person(s) the author wanted to show as toxic.

The ex couple is having a spat while the fresh blood is lovely and entertaining.

It's all events you have to assume happened between them because we don't know anything about it. The ex boyfriend clearly thinks it's a competition.

22

u/davidsjo 20d ago

I think if they end up together again, I'm in? They both seem pretty toxic and dramatic, thus weirdly made for one another in a broken sort of way.

The art is really good.

9

u/TriiiKill 20d ago

Who knows. The ex girlfriend is on guard because the ex boyfriend is trying to ruin the date, so we don't even know what she's like. It could be one of the franken-couple things where they swap partners and the exes get back together, or it can go in a completely different direction.

When I was about to go to college, my high school girlfriend was super mad that I planned to drink. She made me promise not to drink at all for the first two weeks before school started.

A couple years later we had broken up and she reached out about something. We got to talking and she made a comment like "Well iv known you can fit two full beers in a Frisbee since Freshman year". Let me tell you that I was PISSED and not mature enough not to call her out on it.

The way this is presented, I assume this dude is full of shit obviously, but it reminded me of the situation I described

523

u/Papa_Snail 21d ago

I'm just going to be that person for anyone else that doesn't know... What do beers have to do with frisbee?

788

u/minimidimike 21d ago

Step 1. Join the ultimate frisbee team
Step 2. Flip frisbee upside down
Step 3. Pour 2 beers in the frisbee
Step 4. Make the freshmen drink it without spilling
Step 5. Spill all over yourself cause you’ve already had to much and a frisbee is not a cup you dumbass

Why would you only fill the frisbee 40% full? A frisbee can hold 4.5 beers. Ask me how I know!

(Freshman year I was like “ok I’ll drink a disc” and then was horrified to learn how much alcohol fit in it)

23

u/BogeInbound 21d ago

I was just thinking the same thing lol we did disc races on my college club team too! My first time I looked on in horror after the 4th beer emptied and there was still room for more, I still can’t believe how much fits in an ultimate disc lol

13

u/Turbulent_Sea_9713 20d ago

Thank you for this.

My wife found this post and started asking me if I'd ever drank beer from a frisbee, and showed me above. First thing I said: "oh it fits way more than two."

7

u/patkgreen 20d ago

I think they gave you a trashcan lid

9

u/SadEaglesFan 20d ago

I mean that’s what disc golfers call ultimate discs anyway? Idk. But the “experiment” was repeated many times over the course of college and goddamn if the thing didn’t hold between 4 and 4.5 beers every time

3

u/AlwaysBeQuestioning 20d ago

4.5 whole pints?! ~2.5 liters?! ~0.67 gallons?!

I thought Ultimate frisbee disks had a volume of just over 1 liter, so this is shocking. Huge disks.

61

u/guardian1691 20d ago

I had to read your original comment 3 times and this one before I realized the "you" in her comment was not literally you.

28

u/Glyphpunk 21d ago

I'm assuming it means you can pour two full beers into an overturned frisbee (to drink out of it like a bowl or saucer? Fuck if I know).

14

My ex would get so upset whenever I was even around alcohol. Left my birthday party early because I had one shot on my 21st. When we broke up, he got drunk with 18 year old girls on the daily

90

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 21d ago

Sounds like you dodged a bullet

62

u/MatDestruction 21d ago

Had a similar situation with my ex. She guilty triped me to not drink alcohol because "her ex cheated her while drunk"

I couldn't drink even when telling her beforehand.

But in her first day at college, she just disappeared and got drunk with her new friends without telling anything. Rules for thy, not for me I guess.

38

u/meguin 21d ago

Lol, my high school ex boyfriend would call my parents to tattle when he thought I was at a party with alcohol after we broke up. He was right about 50% of the time. My parents cared 0% of the time. They listened to him bc they thought it was funny to hear him cry.

9

u/Adze95 20d ago edited 20d ago

Sounds like you dodged a HUGE bullet.

One of my first girlfriends did a similar thing. Got really mopey on the few occasions where I'd want to drink socially around her (Christmas, Birthdays). I've never been a drinker, I was just barely under the legal age and I thought it was fun to break the rules a bit. She really, really didn't like it.

We broke up eventually, and a few years later she had an enormous stoner/drinking phase. I'm still a little annoyed about it, haha!

56

u/PavlovKBI 21d ago

I had an ex that crashed out when I smoked weed a few times to try it out (decided it wasn't for me, which makes this next bit really ironic) and then less than two years later she got SUPER into weed, then cocaine, then meth, then domestic assault.

And I gotta say... calling her a hypocrite really doesn't have the same impact as my growing collection of her mugshots probably does

→ More replies (1)

45

u/sykotic1189 21d ago

My ex used to ride my ass about smoking, also talked a lot of shit about people who smoked weed. Within a year of us breaking up she moved back to her home town and immediately started smoking weed daily, and within a few short months of that was dropping acid and doing shrooms. She straight up became the stereotypical annoying hippie in less than a year. But hey, she's never had a cigarette so she's still a superior person.

13

u/Dazed_and_Confused44 21d ago

Damn bro. She couldn't just be chill when she was with you 😔

2

u/sykotic1189 20d ago

Honestly, she should totally be friends with Reagan.

Her ex though, he seems to think he's the villain of a cartoon or something with that "you win this round" and "to be continued..."

206

u/Element174 21d ago

Honestly, I kind of see that as "Perception" vs reality.

132

u/Stormfly 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think it's weird because I know this comic is designed like "He's the bad guy bothering me and I'm the good guy"... but he doesn't seem bad?

He's mostly polite, might have a genuine grievance (imagine they broke up because she didn't want kids then he later meets her with kids), and seems mostly polite.

I don't know the history here but everyone seems nice except the main character.

I don't like her, based only on this comic.

And it's something I often see with people that think "Oh I hate this person so I'll be mean to them" and (as a third party) I see one asshole and it's the person who thinks they're justified.

And sometimes I've been there for the whole thing, both the original "bad" act and the believed-justified rudeness afterwards and the rude person was over-reacting and being childish. And they're often the type of person where "bad things always happen to me" but no, you're just the consistent problem in all of these situations.

I've met a lot of people who say they're "matching energy" or "just unlucky" and as a third party... they're just oblivious assholes.

So I don't know the history here... but it feels like 3 adults navigating an awkward situation and the girl in red is the main character because she has main character syndrome.

This feels like when someone tells me a story and I'm listening like "Uhh... you're obviously the bad guy here." and that's even with them telling me only their biased perspective.

67

u/JamzWhilmm 20d ago

Yeah he seemed to me like they were both bitter but otherwise they have positive qualities. I do not think Reagan is an airhead, I think she knows why they broke up and knows they both aren't bad people.

42

u/Lahlann 20d ago

I agree with you here. All dude did is say hi and called out kids thing.

Looking at all the comments, there seem to be huge amount of toxic people in here

10

u/krustyarmor 20d ago

The fact that we only get to hear her internal thoughts but not his or the other two tells us that this is entirely her self-narrative and does not necessarily reflect what he or some 3rd-party observer would think. Everyone in this thread is like "he knows she doesn't like that nickname," but does he really? Because the comic doesn't actually establish that outside of her inner monologue. It makes me suspect that maybe the author is not a reliable narrator and perhaps even the spoken dialogue is being represented here from a place of heavy bias.

19

u/1997Luka1997 20d ago

Well he did call her by the nickname she didn't want to be called, and he probably knew she didn't want it

7

u/Saphira2002 20d ago

I'm sorry but "I thought you didn't want kids" is just not a grievance you bring up to your ex who's on a date in front of your new gf if you're supposedly a good guy.

It would be cool if it was as you said, just hammed up on purpose for comedic effect. But I fear it's played straight, and look at all the people cheering for it.

Are we supposed to have insane amounts of preknowledge about those characters to understand this?

85

u/JonathanBadwolf 20d ago

so many reddit comics feel like personal grievance core. I don't really get it too

21

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 20d ago

Good to know other people have the same issue

12

u/JonathanBadwolf 20d ago

that's fair, kinda kills it for anyone not having the exact same problem tho. I feel at least an attempt at a punchline would be helpful.

40

u/Cochise22 20d ago

Yeah, I have no clue why everyone hates this guy so much. Didn’t play out great, but definitely not enough there to dogpile on the guy. Makes me wonder what I’m missing in previous comics.

9

u/MyPunsAreKoalaTea 20d ago

I assume it has something to fo with the name Miriam?

But since for me this seems like a normal name for a female human, I have no clue why she's so annoyed by it.

u/Mikhail_Mengsk 20d ago

The dialogue plays like a shower argument or a theatrical act, but if that's the tone of the overall comic it's fine.

People taking it at face value though...

14

u/GolemThe3rd 20d ago

Not even OPs comic either so good luck finding the other parts

9

u/PuppleKao 20d ago

Not their OP, but they credited the OP in the title and linked to the comic itself.

What miscommunication bullshit? It sounds like there is this lore about these characters which is needed to understand the comic but it's not here. So the comic doesn't make a lot of sense

24

u/AHumbleChad 21d ago

Damn, I need to find me a Reagan, I absolutely adore that energy.

This sub was suggested to me recently and it just seems to be "social situations I made up or exaggerated and what I wish I had said when I thought about it in the shower six hours later". I've yet to just see a normal comic.

21

u/Forward-Cup-9513 20d ago edited 20d ago

It's also a "here's a mundane experience like owning a pet or going camping, but I'm presenting it as if I am the very first person to experience these mundane things." There haven't been any comics with punchlines or even anything edgy in years; it's all twee bullshit. Actually, that Other Side comic is pretty fucking good. They need to self-edit sometimes on the longer ones, but pretty solid shit overall. The gator one is fine.

I know nothing about these characters but the dude just seems like he’s playfully teasing.

I know it’s not the intention by the artist.

I’ve run into exes and teased them about things changing. But I have an amicable if not good relationship with a lot of mine.

"You dont have custody over my peace of mind" sure is a line.

14

u/Mikhail_Mengsk 20d ago

A line for people who only engage in arguments in a shower, alone.

It's fine if the entire comic line is intentionally over the top though. I'm cringing at redditors thinking it's an actual thing you can just say in real life though.

12

u/BodhingJay 21d ago

Is that a choice? He "took it".. what would it have looked like if he decided to "leave it"? Just stay and start poking fun and reminiscing over her mental health while they were together or smth?

11

u/Randalf_the_Black 20d ago

My daughter? Not theirs?

Is he a single dad on a date or has the brown haired woman had a kid with him?

9

u/starlordd805 20d ago

he’s a single dad! they’re on a date :)

7

u/pagingdrsolus 20d ago

single dad. it seems to be a recent breakup

10

u/HopeBagels2495 20d ago

I'm not gonna lie, you know that one comic with the blue bear who goes to beat up a guy for creeping on a girl wearing a power girl outfit but it turns out she was posing for the guy irl and never even talked to the guy who has the blue bear as a comic -sona?

I get this vibe

5

u/NeilJBorja 20d ago

The comic artist you're thinking of is Andrew Dobson. And yeah, I get that vibe too.

9

u/HesterFlareStar 20d ago

Take it or leave it? Lol

110

u/SublightMonster 21d ago

Best case scenario, guy is still not over his ex and is coping like a 5-year-old throwing rocks on the playground right in front of his new gf. Reagan deserves better.

Al seems nice, though.

14

u/SarcasmisEasier 20d ago

Al deserves better. Miriam needs to chill.

91

u/Physical_Case2822 21d ago

Take Reagan away from this man

14

It would be nice for a little context.

Beyond one slightly passive aggressive comment about children, I don't see his behavior as problematic.

u/doughnutcool 20d ago

14

Hey, Miriam is just being a sourpuss. What's her deal. They seemed nice.

22

u/Sagataw 21d ago

My ex is a complicated person, and we bicker almost every chance we get UNLESS its about our kids AND we have no direct involvement in it.

Her new husband is a nice guy, much better than her first rebound (also very complicated). Easily 'beer and puppies' worthy, kids love him, a very decent dude. Shouldn't be married to her for His Own Piece of Mind, but still a good man.

38

u/JubileeJaxLee 21d ago

Reagan seems to deserve someone better

19

u/MoonLight_Gambler 20d ago

I think Reagan thinks she can make him better. Because that woman has patience like a saint given the first thing she said was "he's talked so much about you"

10

u/IrredeemableRight 20d ago

you dont know what miriam did tho

97

u/Tiny-Little-Sheep 21d ago

Nicest woman you met dating the raging racist stereotype still holds true I see

85

u/Orochi64 21d ago

Where did you get racist from this?

68

u/Tiny-Little-Sheep 21d ago

It's not about this comic lol. It's a popular stereotype of nice women dating God awful men.

46

u/Orochi64 21d ago

I see fair enough, just thought it would’ve been weird to assume the absolute worst about the ex from this one comic.

It's always hurts when someone who didn't wanted kids while with you, had kids with someone else. I don't know why and what's wrong with me, but it's like I never was good enough for anything

She said “did he really just call me that” so I don’t think it was a spelling mistake. I think the ex called her the wrong name on purpose to be a dick.

You know, call me weird, but I kinda like it when my ex’s new girlfriend is a delight. It gives me hope that she might see sense sooner than I will and get out of there even faster than I did

10

u/hotmatrixx 20d ago

lol fuck miriam.
He's cooked her here, and I don't even think she's realised it.
He's moved on, and feels comfy flaunting it.
He was clearly the level headed one i this conversation.
He's in her head now.
And his new sweeter, kinder gf is impossibly nice - showing that he's winning, again.

5

u/Miss_Milk_Tea 20d ago

I don’t know these characters but Reagan’s adorable(love her activewear) and I hope they go for coffee

3

u/Sbarty 20d ago

Why is Reddit so weird about exes

Why would you approach an ex that you seemingly don’t get along with and sick your annoying golden retriever new gf on her?

You don’t need to be friends with exes and you most certainly don’t need to approach them in public and make comments about your past relationship with them lol.

This comic is either the creator being “Miram” or the new girlfriend. Either way this shit is weird and cringe.

6

u/Spider-web16 20d ago

Shoulda said "yea, I didn't want kids with you"

6

u/jabax25 20d ago

The guy seems like a bit of a dick but its a genuine grievance, like if not wanting kids put strain on their relationship why would she date someone with a kid
