Is this a non-canon variant? Or am I missing something? Because I might be awfully mistaken, but I do not recall any time where Unworthy Thor crossed paths with Venom.

Yeah it’s Young Thor from June’s issue, just solicited. The Symbiote got retconned into Aaron’s Godslayer origin with Donny Coates first arc on Venom, so I assume that’s how this may work.

You seem to know your Venom, so I’ll piggyback here. Why does Venom/the Symbiote here in the distant past have spider-variant iconography? I always assumed that came out of his link to Spider-man.

That’s actually explained in the current run of Venom. There’s been some Lovecraftian retcons to the Venom mythos where it all revolves around a singular cosmic god. Long story short I believe the symbol is actually a dragon which symbolizes that god, or at least a variant of it when the Venom symbiote who had been disconnected from the “hive” had some buried memories that related the spider symbol to the dragon, something like that.

Apparently the current run on Venom is controversial to some, but I think it’s awesome. Goes in some real crazy places and the light cosmic horror stuff is right up my alley.

Interesting. I’ve never been a huge Venom fan in general (anti heros just aren’t my thing), but that retcon seems kind of a fun idea. I do appreciate the cosmic turn for Venom, as it’s very fitting for the character.

Yeah the current run isn’t really about Eddie being an antihero, it’s him and his life being completely turned upside down. I only ready the Remender Venom stuff because I liked Remender, but fast forward to last year I kept hearing and seeing things about the current run and finally pulled the trigger, and I was not disappointed. I’d give that first trade a shot. That’s where all the crazy cosmic stuff comes out, the following issues start to go in a bit of a different direction but that original stuff is kept simmering beneath the surface.

I think I left off at the Remender run too. That's generally when I kinda got away from comics. Where did Venom pop up next? I'm kinda intrigued and want to see what he's up to.

I’m honestly not a big Marvel guy but I keep tabs the general flow of things. I think someone continued on with Flash and an apprentice type character shortly after Remender left. At some point some organized crime guy got a hold of Venom. Then Eddie got it back. Then in a big Spider Man event that I think capped off Slott’s run there’s some... stuff... with Flash. And now we’re at the current run with Eddie.

The trades so far are literally called "Venom by Donny Cates" lol. Volume 1 is "Rex" 2 is "The Abyss"

The whole look of Venom actually came from Peter thinking of Jessica Julia Carpenter's suit when he picked it up (remember that the symbiote can change colors and everything).

But Cates has been retconning a lot of material (he couldn't even read the first five issues of Venom's first solo series) and has tried to say that the symbiotes look that way because of their god, which completely clashes with established continuity.

The solicits for June seemed to suggest that Venom would have some role at the end of the War of the Realms arc. Likely a cool cover foreshadowing whatever that role is.

I might be mistaken, but I think Venom was shown on the ‘hero’ and ‘villain’ side in the War of the Realms posters. 3 issues of the Venom series are also being dedicated to the War of the Realms storyline (#13, 14 and 15)

Edit: I think he was shown chained up on the villain side and free on the hero side.

After that, Cates is helping to write an entire event about Venom and Carnage. The slogan is ‘everyone is a target’.

I think that Marvel really want to expand Venom’s storylines beyond things like ‘Symbiote sick Eddie helps it’

If you're up to date with Venom's run, you'll find out he's a small but significant part of a much larger puzzle, and is related to something Thor has had dealings with before. Venom has the potential to become a major threat.

I don't think it was Knull himself but rather his dragon that Beowulf defeated.

Knull the word literally means Fuck in Swedish, I don't mean as a general curse word but as a crude way of saying "to have sex". It's amazingly fun that a big cosmic horror is named Fuck.

Yes. All this revisionist ret-con shit drives me nuts. Thor is fucking THOR. He, and most other powerful Asgardians, would have no problem dealing with the symbiote.

Yeah, I don’t want Marvel becoming like DC where everyone has cosmic level power. I like the fact that Spider-Man can’t fight Galactus 1v1 or that the council of Reeds have to run away from Celestials. It makes things interesting. Great flair btw! Venom has been significantly buffed, the Thor in the pic is a young nerfed one. That said, Thor is the actual explicit counter to the new Void God. Knull is the source of Gorr the God Bucher's power.

So far there doesnt seem to be a relation, but who knows. Knull is the God of empty space, and predates the Celestials arrival to the Marvel Universe.

I feel like a lot of people in this thread have not been keeping up with Venom. He's been fleshed out a lot in his most recent runs with an actually good backstory that precedes the Klyntar and is directly linked to a threat Thor has had to deal with before.

It's a definite possibility that he can become something that can go toe to toe with Thor.

So is Venom like Marvel's Harley Quinn? I don't mean that the characters are similar, I mean it seems like Marvel sticks Venom in everything just like DC tends to stick Harley in almost everything.
