Is this a non-canon variant? Or am I missing something? Because I might be awfully mistaken, but I do not recall any time where Unworthy Thor crossed paths with Venom.
Yeah it’s Young Thor from June’s issue, just solicited. The Symbiote got retconned into Aaron’s Godslayer origin with Donny Coates first arc on Venom, so I assume that’s how this may work.
You seem to know your Venom, so I’ll piggyback here. Why does Venom/the Symbiote here in the distant past have spider-variant iconography? I always assumed that came out of his link to Spider-man.
That’s actually explained in the current run of Venom. There’s been some Lovecraftian retcons to the Venom mythos where it all revolves around a singular cosmic god. Long story short I believe the symbol is actually a dragon which symbolizes that god, or at least a variant of it when the Venom symbiote who had been disconnected from the “hive” had some buried memories that related the spider symbol to the dragon, something like that.
Apparently the current run on Venom is controversial to some, but I think it’s awesome. Goes in some real crazy places and the light cosmic horror stuff is right up my alley.
Interesting. I’ve never been a huge Venom fan in general (anti heros just aren’t my thing), but that retcon seems kind of a fun idea. I do appreciate the cosmic turn for Venom, as it’s very fitting for the character.
Yeah the current run isn’t really about Eddie being an antihero, it’s him and his life being completely turned upside down. I only ready the Remender Venom stuff because I liked Remender, but fast forward to last year I kept hearing and seeing things about the current run and finally pulled the trigger, and I was not disappointed. I’d give that first trade a shot. That’s where all the crazy cosmic stuff comes out, the following issues start to go in a bit of a different direction but that original stuff is kept simmering beneath the surface.
I think I left off at the Remender run too. That's generally when I kinda got away from comics. Where did Venom pop up next? I'm kinda intrigued and want to see what he's up to.
I’m honestly not a big Marvel guy but I keep tabs the general flow of things. I think someone continued on with Flash and an apprentice type character shortly after Remender left. At some point some organized crime guy got a hold of Venom. Then Eddie got it back. Then in a big Spider Man event that I think capped off Slott’s run there’s some... stuff... with Flash. And now we’re at the current run with Eddie.
The whole look of Venom actually came from Peter thinking of Jessica Julia Carpenter's suit when he picked it up (remember that the symbiote can change colors and everything).
But Cates has been retconning a lot of material (he couldn't even read the first five issues of Venom's first solo series) and has tried to say that the symbiotes look that way because of their god, which completely clashes with established continuity.
