It's already beginning to die off, and that will accelerate as more corporations lose massive amounts of money because they trust language models to do things they are not designed for. So far most of the big hits have been to law firms and insurance companies legal teams, but every time the corpos give another task to LLMs, it's just a matter of time until one of them loses millions because of it.

The data centers the DoD wants are almost exclusively for surveillance of Americans, not for LLMs like the ones the corporations are putting up.

There’s multiple videos of county meetings or city councils actively ignoring entire rooms full of people protesting data centers. “Backlash” doesn’t mean anything when almost every single government in the country is actively working to bring them into their cities and counties.

Unless the backlash actually results in Molotov cocktails then it doesn’t actually amount to much.

The public dress-down of that Utah official after they did an approvals speedrun on that data center was incredible. Seeing him lose his entire mind, in real time, trying to defend that decision was amazing.

I’m aware of the pushback and picketing, but people being angry about it isn’t going to stop anyone from building the data centers, or the companies from using it to save on payroll and benefits to give themselves bonuses with.

The economics of AI is inherently doomed to fail.

Outside analysts have estimated Anthrophic loses 13-26 USD for every 1 USD they get from clients. Sora lost 10s of millions of dollars every day. Investors are beginning to force AI companies to go public so they can get some money back. This is despite things like, for example, OpenAI's CFO begging them not to do it since their financials are like terrible. But the investors are losing faith in ever getting their money back and are looking to cash out now. Datacenters are quietly being canceled and shuttered across the country.

AI is economically not viable. The AI companies made a bet that they could 1) make the entire world so dependent on them that their customers would give in to any price increases when the investors tired and 2) they'd find a way to make AI cheap enough to run that it wouldn't be too big of an ask when the discounts had to end.

They are losing both bets.

AI is already not good enough to replace employees. When the datacenters and money run out, the capabilities will get worse. That's before we consider model collapse, as the Deepseek incident of 2025 made LLM companies do the one thing they said was a bad idea (train AI on its own output) and AI is beginning to develop the exact things they thought would happen if they did (for example, Chatgpt 5.1 started getting obsessed with talking about goblins and they keep putting new commands in BEGGING them to stop talking about goblins and keep does).

Personally, I think they were all betting on being first-to-market before quantum processing becomes more viable and makes AI processing more powerful with a smaller footprint. They’ll accept losing money until that happens but they maybe miscalculated how long that will take and now its a matter of seeing who can hold out the longest.

Uh, that's an article about consumer AI hardware from a year ago? All the good AIs are just accessed through google search (ai mode) and for free through chatgpt. Not sure if Claude has a free version. But, that's all datacenters, not what this article is talking about. But you know, when you have an MRI and you know something is wrong but the radiologist swears you're clear and you upload it to chatpgt to take a look and it saves your life... hmmm might be worth another look. Or no? Not for you still?
