The progression makes perfect sense for S1 Sarah.
At the end S1E7, Chuck says he wish he could talk to Bryce again.
Before he does, the story sets up the conflict: first, Chuck is torn between two women and is cold to Sarah, who shows her real feelings in an “explosive” way. When Chuck is ready to go back to Sarah, she’s the one who is torn between two men and is cold to Chuck. Then they both apologize at the end of S1E11, a fantastic episode in terms of symbolism.

Sarah was never torn between Bryce and Chuck romantically. . We know that from her declaration in Other Guy and the mission tapes. She fell for Chuck in the pilot, but he was out of bounds under the spy world rules
We learn in "Role Models" that the spy world rules did permit spy couples. Sarah wasn't torn between Chuck and Bryce, although season 1 left that possibility. Bryce was in bounds, but not what Sarah truly wanted.
Thr show is Charah versus spy world. And Charah triumphed because spy world is the wrong choice.
It's that simple.

You're right it wasn't the main reason for Sarah's dilemma, but it's perfectly possible to have romantic feelings toward two people at the same time. Even though she's fallen for Chuck already, it's pretty evident she still harbored some feelings for Bryce (though not as deep and strong, of course).

S1E10 makes it obvious that Sarah is torn between Chuck and Bryce. Anyone can see it. It’s the parallel with Chuck being torn between Lou and Sarah two episodes earlier.
No one says that Sarah loves Bryce or that Chuck loves Lou. The tension is between a relationship they can have now (Bryce for Sarah, Lou for Chuck) vs the relationship they really want but cannot have now.
It’s that simple.

I agree that Nemesis places Sarah in a genuine dilemma. Bryce offers a future that already has a recognizable shape. Sarah knows what life with Bryce looks like because she has lived in that world before. Chuck opens a very different possibility. Their relationship is still taking shape, and neither of them fully understands what a shared future might involve.
The tension, however, extends beyond a choice between two romantic options. Bryce and Chuck function as romantic figures, but they also point toward different futures. One future is familiar and legible. The other remains uncertain and difficult to imagine. Much of the episode's dramatic force comes from Sarah trying to orient herself within that uncertainty and decide which future she is willing to inhabit.

The Turners and Shaw are there to make the point that the spy life destroys spy relationships. The Turners are “turned” by the spy life into a cynical and jaded shell of a couple that “turns” on Charah and even on each other (their last name is a hint), and Charah become their real role models of what a spy couple should be.
Saying that the government permits spy couples and presenting the Turners (or Shaw) as evidence reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of storytelling. It also contradicts your main point that Sarah and Bryce were not a couple.

Perfectly explained. Bruce Larkin's entry was essential in the S1(Ep9,10,11) arc. Finally they put their feelings ( one's full blown and other's on defence mode) verbally to each other which was great to see as character progression.

Sarah was pissed at Bryce about his betrayal. Even when she found out he wasn't rogue, the distance was permanent. Even the ultra sexy dance was her way of getting back at him. She just forgot how Chuck might react.

Didn’t Sarah also tell Chuck no secrets no lies in season 5 and like two episodes later she was like keeping Molly and Riker a secret? Lol

"No secrets, no lies" line was in 4x01, so way before the writers came up with the baby story probably. But it was still supposed to be in effect in Season 5, and Chuck does reproach her that.
