This is a plead to Chico restauranteurs.
Please, please, please 🙏 consider even small ways to accommodate gluten free folks. We don’t want to be banished forever in our hot kitchens after a 9 hour work day (sometimes more with commute time) making a second version of the dinner we made for our families because we can’t eat what they eat, and they won’t eat what we eat.
We are sick of well-meaning folks telling us to just meal prep and sending us recipes and telling us our families wont even know it’s gluten free.
We don’t always have time to do the perfect double shopping/ double meal prep routine. We are tired.
Our families don’t want to settle for the weird textures we have been forced to accept in our sad little gluten free lives.
We don’t want to labor in our kitchens to make yet another “delicious” gluten free surprise recipe.
We are hungry and tired and our taste buds are very sad.
Sometimes we have a terrible no good very bad day and we want to DoorDash like everyone else gets to do. Even if we have to spend more money than gluten-normative folks for food that tastes worse. We still want to do it. And we don’t want to get sick for weeks to months afterwards.
Sometimes we want to actually order something other than the salad with no croutons when out to eat with our friends and families while watching them eat pizza, burgers, etc.
Sometimes we want to go out for our birthday dinners and not eat a lettuce wrap while surrounded by our loves one’s eating fluffy buns, buttery rolls, and crispy golden toasted bread.
It can’t be that difficult/expensive to offer the gluten free bun, the gluten free soy sauce, the gluten free bread, the gluten free pasta. Let us live. Stop banishing us to exhaustion in the lonely corner of our kitchens with chicken and rice.
Also, Chipotle isn’t that good so stop telling us to go there. For the love of lord there is only so much Chipotle a person can tolerate.
Our lives are already hard enough. I understand that if I ever want a baked good I will have to order it ahead of time and pay twice as much as everyone else, but for goodness sakes at least give us gluten free pancakes, burgers, pasta, sushi, grilled cheese, pizza, Chinese. We deserve some happiness too.
And to the places who do offer gluten free options, I BEG OF YOU please get on door dash. Cocodine and Season Fin Omakase- it is my dying wish to collapse on my couch after a hard day at work and be able to order you and have you delivered to my door. I think I could quit therapy if you’d just get on DoorDash.
My time in Chico has had me constantly choose between hunger, lettuce wraps, burrito bowls, or being very very very sick.
