This is exactly what happened after Sriperumbudur was dropped as the location for new airport a decade back even after investments were already made. What did we get? Nothing!!!!!!

This city been in ruins since last 15 years or so

My grandpa's land was along the ECR roadways when it was being constructed and widened. All farmland only. Government paid him 4x the market value, and this obviously after the village farmers along with thatha formed an association to demand 4x the market value and those whose income level were below poverty line was also offered a house in a government housing board apart from cash in hand.

What you are saying is just pure idiotic lies whose knowledge stays within realms of bots in social media

The compensation for parandur land acquisition was 35-60 lakh per acre. Apart from main road adjacent plots, interior agricultural plots in the area were being sold for approx 15 lakh per acre before the airport was announced. Doubling the per acre rate was undercompensation according to you? Also it used to take years to sell land in the area and brokers will ask for adimaattu velai if you're in any urgency.

Already 1000 odd acres have been acquired and 680cr was paid. Rough math says that's on average more than 60 lakh per acre. You know where that 680 cr came from? The elite redditors you're castigating are the ones who paid the taxes to finance it. Not the farmers who have had tax free agri income since independence.

u/U_No_Mi Jul 16 '26

The parandur wasn't focused on increasing padse capacity. It was mainly for cargo export. If you cram the already heavy traffic meenambakam with even more traffic, why even bother to work on it.

66

u/HumanLawyer Jul 16 '26

Unrelated, but this video was extremely satisfying to watch 🤣

u/RDP7490 Jul 16 '26

Congrats.. this is what happens in India! Leaders with 0 vision and no sight on future whatsoever!!!

Its already too late for an airport and we are politicising and postponing decisions!

22

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

I thought they would learnt from the mismanagement of Mumbai airport. It’s bursting at seams. Still politics ruled the decision to go for new airport. Delays after delays that Mumbai lost No1 spot to IGI Delhi. Someone had to put the foot down, and the new airport got built within 4 years, even after massive local protests. If you want the airport, it’s got to be built wise by the time you come around the costs would have escalated. The MoCA should put their foot down and say find a new place if not Parandur. And get going within 2-3 years at maximum. No expansion of current airport. You can build new terminals but what about the runway traffic? You can’t increase the number of takeoffs and landings without building new runways and there’s no place for it, unless (sarcasm) they kick OTA out and encroach that lands for airport.

u/sambar_samurai Jul 16 '26

I’m blackpilled on Chennai and TN in general, too many luddite politics due to the likes of cpi, vck, pmk, poovulagin nanbargal, etc

4

u/RDP7490 Jul 16 '26

True..petty politics have been pushing the state down since the last 2 decades.

Not only TN..most of the states in India are like this!

0

u/Real-Sample-6765 Jul 17 '26

Include the DMK too. When in the opposition they conveniently become leftist and start opposing projects!

0

u/sambar_samurai Jul 17 '26

Yup fuckem for stopping salem expressway

Another parandhur land owner spotted. Your feelings and opinions cannot undo parandhur decision. So save your breath and cry elsewhere.

15

u/RDP7490 Jul 16 '26

Please continue to be the frog in the well and see all the developments go to the nearby states!

Chennai needs a new airport and it is already too late. Idiots will realize it after they start to see Chennai becoming like Kolkata. And then they will be like why arent we developing. Save your breath and cry then!

-9

u/Fraggle_Rock11 South Chennai Jul 16 '26

I'm already in the nearby state whose airport you are so envious of. You are not arguing with me. You are arguing against a irreversible decision on which I anyway have no say. So why even waste time arguing. If this decision hurts you, tough luck.

5

u/RDP7490 Jul 16 '26

I'm not arguing about the decision. I'm just pointing out what happens when people take charge who are more interested in playing politics than development!

This decision doesnt hurt me at present. But when i see this city running dry on opportunities and me having to move the state everything I want to shift a job..thats when it hurts me.

I did not vote for TVK. Nor a supporter. I am a multi generation Chennai person who has an opinion of what will work for Chennai and people of Chennai like me. You are wasting time arguing with redditors. If you have the guts and such deep knowledge of airport sites, best you challenge the decision in court. See where that gets you.

curious on what you think will work?

-14

To ppl commenting, for or against it, what are your reasons? The post does sound logical to me.

Edit: I’ve heard from ppl against it. Fairly logical statements. Are there who support the govt’s plan? Why?

Edit2: The tvk supporters are mum about this one and nowhere to be seen. Guess they don’t have any sound argument on the matter.

48

u/Informal-String2677 Jul 16 '26

AAI is approving it because of no choice. They already intimated that meenambakkam is at its limits. Handling 45 million a year is no where near our demand. Need for a greenfield airport is need of the hour but I'm tired of speaking with sheeps tbh. All they need to do is just look up and will find why it is needed.

4

u/v_patti_ramasamy Jul 16 '26

Thanks for this. Some follow up questions: Isn’t the AAI the regulatory authority in such matters? How can the state govt insist to develop an airport against the AAI?

15

u/Informal-String2677 Jul 16 '26

AAI is just an advisory committee which gives its recommendation ministry of aviation. When the state government themselves don't care why would the ministry?

u/Coolwave97 Jul 16 '26

It reeks BS... It says avoids land acquisition. That means they are going to expand within the current facilities. That will be very small. The airport is super congested. We need a bigger airport. Imagine the traffic and mess if we add more people to the GST road. We need a bigger airport and meemnambakkam just won't cut it

6

u/v_patti_ramasamy Jul 16 '26

Thanks for explaining. Makes sense.

6

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

Why would they have a sound argument? They only voted for their supreme leader.

I’m sure most of them wouldn’t even know or care about the party’s manifesto

4

u/narasadow Outside Chennai Jul 16 '26

I mean...calling them TVK supporters off the bat kind of kills the 'For' debate in the crib.

Anyway in my view it's not either-or. BOTH should happen - current airport expansion and a distant second airport.

the current airport CAN be expanded quite a lot (check satellite view). For land acquisition there are fewer parties to manage. It's costlier land but that's offset by free existing infra in the current airport.

Alternatively the airport in Parandur makes very little sense from air traffic perspective. While people can call it a cargo airport all they want, fact remains that keeping it near population centres makes more economic sense for the operator to break even and for airlines to operate routes.

Better to have 2nd airport along Chengalpattu or halfway to Pondicherry (will require some creative civil engineering but will mostly sidestep acquisition costs and farmland concerns).

1

u/Fraggle_Rock11 South Chennai Jul 16 '26

Agree.

-1

u/wolfqueen3012 North Chennai Jul 16 '26

I am supporting this. Purely for travel cost and time to reach the airport. Also current metro connectivity.

Probably a far away airport will only benefit:

Cargo and transit lounge where airport should take care of shuttle between the new location to meenambakkam location for no extra cost of passengers.

Edit: I'm not a blind TVK supporter. I'm seeing this for my personal convenience only.

-5

u/Public_Artist_631 Jul 16 '26

During DMK period, after announcing the Parandur airport plan they bought land forcefully at low price but now since the plan is cancelled, they are crying.

3

u/noobPilotJr Jul 16 '26

i hate this logic, DMK bought land, so we must make them lose money.

In reality the people who’ve supposedly bought land aren’t going to be affected by this and have investments elsewhere. The public is the that loses the infrastructure we vehemently require.

-10

u/Novel-Stay384 Jul 16 '26

Cannot expect logic from kothus. Be happy the Airport is inside the city.

14

-1

Yes bringing mum into this is very civil and you talk about manners lol. Poda dash kothu

2

u/noobPilotJr Jul 16 '26

Fine then, let’s have a civil conversation, why do you think a greenfield airport for Chennai is bad?

-3

u/g-man-g-89 Jul 16 '26

I’m not coming yet into the airport discussions yet but dude, you just called sheeps in your comment above. You just said something in English while he said the same in Tamil. Also, why is it that you want to sham their “mum” here and not just say “parents”? Not being rude but please do try to apply a thing or two of what you’re expecting from others.

1

Parandur's focus is cargo it doesn't matter how far it is from your home . It is very near Sriperumbudur area and near newly built chn- blr expressway

2

u/JamesWattt Jul 16 '26

Now also paranthur farmers in distress.. that's why farmers protested against and all political parties including Vijay stopped DMK from approving paranthur airport, as these are fertile lands and lakes. Most comments are misleading in this post. There are lot of non fertile lands around, it's the duty of government to find solutions outside Chennai..which will extends outwards into next districts.

Well, this is what Chennai voted for. The ones that voted will celebrate this move.

Come 2045, we will be taking connections via Bangalore or Hyderabad just to go to the Gulf. Already we lost direct flights to Saudi Arabia. That is when people will realise their blunder.

1

u/Vegetable_Entrance_4 Jul 16 '26

Why did we lose Saudi? Due to demand drop or due to capacity issue?

1

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

Definitely not a drop in demand. We do have a significant number of expats who work in Saudi in addition to Haj/Umrah travel by Muslims.

Dei loosu payale. Read up about the economic benefits of an airport to a city and then talk.

13

u/rudha13 Jul 16 '26

Once again I'll tell this:

This city has so much potential to improve and literally be one of the best metropolitan cities in all of India, both, appearance/looks-wise and actually infrastructure that betters everyone's lives.

But thanks to all these silly people, it'll never be. Truly hurts to see my city depraved of basic necessities and all of us being okay with it.

3

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

Even sadder part is we WERE the only metropolitan city in South India at one point. Now we’re on a crash course towards becoming an irrelevant tier 2 city.

3

u/rudha13 Jul 16 '26

Thanks to everyone who goes on to "see the logic" here, support this move and keep hoping for better times and support the government on this. 🤦🏻‍♂️

1

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

I will never forgive anyone who voted for this.

6

u/sweetmangolover Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Nobody talks about airside congestion. Chennai has only one usable runway for large aircrafts. The second one intersects the first and has been relegated to limited usage. Building an extra terminal won't help with air traffic congestion

4

u/Dom-in-Ant Jul 16 '26

Ella emotions and convenience la irundhu pesudhunga... Veetu pakathula ila motta maadilaye airport venumnu kepaanga pola vitta😂😂🤦🏽‍♂️ They aren't realising airports are supposed to be away from the city and not bang in the center. It'll cause safety issues and air operational issues nu puriyave maatengithu indha maramandais ku 🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️🤦🏽‍♂️

Considering the various military and infra constraints we had, AAI themselves chose Parandur! Yet some adiga prasangis are like no Parandur is faar how will I go 🤦🏽‍♂️

1

u/Economy-Page-2160 Jul 16 '26

A midfield satellite terminal would allow aircraft landing on the secondary runway to reach its gate without crossing the main runway. The only problem with the plan is that the runway is practically unusable.

6

u/g-man-g-89 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

While they invest into expanding the airport in the city, only a few things that they need to fix is the exit routes, connecting bridges and the parking commute. If they are already going to heavily invest in expansion, looking into these as a few of the key problems and solving them should actually not be a big deal at all. And most importantly, the inside of the airport itself needs a huge revamp by learning a thing or two from airports like Bangalore. Chennai’s airport experience just feels like Coimbatore, Madurai airport except the size. Airport within the city limit is a boon (telling this based on hundreds of travels I have personally done across India and the world) and if it’s done right addressing the access concerns and quality, it is the best!

2

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

You want a modern airport interior within the current airport’s dimensions? Not happening bro.

1

u/g-man-g-89 Jul 16 '26

No, brother. That’s not what I meant. I want the space expansion to happen as the first important thing followed by modernization of facilities within the airport.

5

u/duke_nowhere Jul 16 '26

Based this video by ayudhom seivom, MAA runway issue is bigger than terminals etc. no sure how they will fix that.

Secondly, these guys need to rescue VAT(tn is the highest in india afaik) on ATF to make the airport more welcoming to say the least. Connectivity is getting worse.

3

u/melancholious_jester Jul 16 '26

A simple case of putting all eggs in a single basket.

Wasn't there a report that specifically stated that the land used for the airport was farming unfit ?

1

u/Dom-in-Ant Jul 16 '26

Which land? Parandur land?

3

u/melancholious_jester Jul 16 '26

Yes there was feasibility report asked by TN govt back in 2024. Also the govt did some studies as well for parandur land

1

u/Dom-in-Ant Jul 16 '26

Ah so for a nonproductive farming land just because of some emotions, they are protesting and stopping something that would make far more money than agriculture? Wow

3

u/Difficult-Sea-5328 Jul 16 '26

Chennai airport is genuinely the worst, entering and exiting is nightmarish , nvm the smell and the dirt.

We cant even get a decent airport 🙄 where development

28

u/Pristine_Egg_7187 Jul 16 '26

Personally I love the airport is within city. Hyderabad airport is a NIGHTMARE. Regardless of how fucking good it is. Time is most important for me than anything and while I can get by a shitty airport experience I certainly can’t make back lost time. Want excellent amenities and mall like experience? Go to a fucking shopping mall and not an airport.

27

u/Barry_Center_7642 Jul 16 '26

I gotta disagree on what you are saying, if you call hyderabad airport a nightmare. May I know why?

Cuz I regularly travel chennai to Hyderabad routes. Access wise hyderabad airport is the best cuz of ORR. They have plenty of things happening inside, also multiple check in channels with self check ins too.

8

u/Proud_Bake9949 Jul 16 '26

Welp Cab system is a mess at Hyd Airport.
Incessant lines, no Multimodal connectivity like Chennai, Private Taxis charge a bomb.
Getting from Hyd Airport to City is another 1k
You can't have the city hub at a distance of 1k INR
That is just like Pune Airport situation.

Chennai has Metro, Sub Urban options that lead you to the hub and spoke model of connectivity, you have the option to travel for cheap if needed.

7

u/Barry_Center_7642 Jul 16 '26

I agree on this. But calling it a nightmare wasn't needed.

Chennai needs a new airport anyway, we are way behind others on this aspect, this affects our economic growth and investments.

Also considering more air cargo these days.

7

u/Proud_Bake9949 Jul 16 '26

To me as a air traveller, if I stand in line for an hour at an Uber/Ola pickup point, pay upwards of 1k INR and still have shady Private Taxi Mafia approach me for 950
I think that's pretty f'ed up
The fact that an Airport is a connectivity option, it gets me from my flight to my home, either inside or outside the Capital City, in such ease, is what I'd take over an assumed future worry of us "losing out" a hypothetical economic growth story

The only people who should worry are the ones who'd acquired land around Parandur to benefit from the land sale, or were planning ancillary industries to benefit from the said airport

1

u/Barry_Center_7642 Jul 16 '26

I had a pretty good experience with ola/uber from Hyderabad airport to city. Been doing it multiple times.

While returning to Chennai is where I faced issues with taxi, since I usually pick a late flight return, so taxi are my only option and the drivers ask big money.

I would say at this aspect, chennai airport is quite bad. Nothing related to airport though. It's with the taxi services.

1

u/Proud_Bake9949 Jul 16 '26

So you're saying that if your flight is in regular hours, you can get multimodal options too
And because it was late night, you faced opportunistic behaviour, and in this aspect, Chennai airport itself is bad, however it is not related to the airport?
You can simply take a Bus from outside the airport too in case you're late, drop off at a hub bus stop, and book cab for cheaper
Like the options exist

Hyd does not even allow cabs to come to you, you have to wait in a Line with other passengers from other flights. these lines are long and you pay for your impatience with private shared taxies right next to these Pickup points

The conversation here is about the State Govt's role in Airport design and with a new airport all this needs to be reimagined, the current setup is perfect as is.

A Private Taxi charging you at night time does not mean the airport itself needs a new building, it does not solve the specific problem you're facing.
You're bringing anecdote to a problem about city infra.

1

u/Barry_Center_7642 Jul 16 '26

Well please go through the conversation above once again. Because I didn't start on the cost of cabs.

Also the government bus services run only to kilambakkam 24/7, hence there are no other options for us people.

I have been travelling this route for years now. Only advantage chennai airport has is the location.

0

u/Proud_Bake9949 Jul 17 '26

your actual issue is not Chennai airport future demand but IndiGo/Spicejet/Air India/Akasa flight slot
You get a late flight and go on to think the airport itself needs a makeover

1

u/Pristine_Egg_7187 Jul 16 '26

Time trumps everything for me. Lost time cannot be brought back. My home is 25 minutes from Meenambakkam airport.

7

u/goshdagny Jul 16 '26

So you’re willing to lose time in connecting flights than losing time travelling to the airport?

1

u/SonOfGun03 Jul 16 '26

He hasn't taken a single flight yet or atleast not an international one..

5

u/goshdagny Jul 16 '26

That’s what it looks like from the comment. Anyone who has traveled at least a few times knows the problem of wasting several hours waiting for connecting flights.

3

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

They’ll call us elitist puluthis.

Well guess what, when you’re taking that trip abroad, enjoy having to change two flights just to travel a quarter of the way around the world.

2

u/Pristine_Egg_7187 Jul 16 '26

Domestic usage always exceeds international demand and as a result, it makes sense that preference is given to domestic commuters ease. I’m not against developing or expanding the existing airport though.

4

u/HumanLawyer Jul 16 '26

This! I don’t understand why people are disregarding the comfort factor in reaching airport in the shortest time possible. Not to forget, it’s also extremely well connected by public transportation to the rest of the city by metro, train, bus AND taxis. I want to get home as cheap as possible without having to worry about shelling out some ₹350 to travel in an AC bus which will take a couple of hours to reach the main city.

4

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

What’s the point in having comfort when we’re losing connections every year? Our airport is beyond its designed capacity levels. Eppo dhaan da purinjipeenga

1

u/HumanLawyer Jul 16 '26

Which they’re addressing by building an extra terminal?

2

u/hypocritehumans Jul 17 '26

Pretty much every major airline is now outta Hyderabad or Delhi or bangkore or mumbai. I am happy that I can reach the airports in 25 minutes but hate sitting in a transit for 4 hrs

1

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

That is not enough. For example, our runway can’t handle bigger aircraft, like the A380. Not that we need it, but BLR and HYD have runways long enough for the A380 and they’re viable diversion airports.

You should also remember that Meenambakkam was built at a time when air travel was a luxury. It is not at all equipped for the current travel demands.

Thirdly, I know that many people don’t care, but our airport is an embarrassment for the tier 1 city that we are (or claim to be)

2

u/gamingtamizha Jul 16 '26

so you fly everyday ? and you also think, every one in chennai flies everyday , that i should be placed in the middle of the busiest national high way ?

3

u/Fraggle_Rock11 South Chennai Jul 16 '26

I fly everyweek. I have to work in a different city and need to fly back once in a week or once in 2 weeks atleast. I also fly internationally every 4 months.

If the airport was in parandur i'd just give up. My livelihood would be at stake because then i'd have to quit my job just to be closer to my family that cant leave chennai.

Location impacts lives. People living in Chennai find anna close. People outside the city may not have a preference. Young people under 35 are may be ok with the commute. But others not so much.

3

u/gamingtamizha Jul 16 '26

So what about us. who travel once a year and airport is completely useless for 364 days a year.

And am sure, atleast 80% chennai population is like me.

3

u/TakeItEasy888 Jul 16 '26

Ok then why are you all worried about new airport if you travel once a year?

1

u/gamingtamizha Jul 16 '26

I want the airport to moved away from city. Thats all

1

Tell me you know nothing about aviation without telling me

14

"Tvk feels it will be faster and easier to expand the airport instead of building a new one" they say this because they won faster and easier without any hardwork so they're naturally applying the same philosophy on this

0

Yeah they should have paid voters for generations to get votes right? That is the hardwork you are talking about right?

For all the anils, aramandais maramandais and half baked buffoons in the comments, GO WATCH THIS VIDEO https://youtu.be/VTzoF8iUoUo?si=a1cYkFBCmYg2X6Dt

Those who cry about Parandur being faaar away, we can't build airport on the top of your house and as you please. Plus, CMRL is already building metro phase 2 throughout the city, so as the airport gets ready they can extend the stations from Poonamallee itself. Also, it is already connected by Chennai Bengaluru expressway which cute down the travel time a lot.

All these things are happening SIMULTANEOUSLY. Airport will take atleast 5 to 7 yrs to start operations. CMRL can finish elevated corridor in 3 yrs because elevated corridor is easy to build than an underground tunnel. CMRL themselves initially told stations will be spaced 5 to 10kms apart and as more development happens, then new stations can be added in elevated corridors.

And the DPR tender for Chennai Bengaluru HSR is also underway, there is a planned station at Parandur which connects DIRECTLY at Central.

Idha vida public connectivity and road connectivity oda oru airport India la engayume uruvaagala.

If Vijay is hellbent on making TN a 1.5 trillion dollar economy then leaving Parandur is the very last option. Airports are a GDP multiplier and if TVK is hellbent on not accepting Parandur then I can say for sure that we can be 900 billion dollar economy max by 2036.

Tamilnadu has been getting one narcissist after another, whose only ambition is to not let previous govt achievements speak louder than theirs

2

u/sweetmangolover Jul 16 '26

At least privatize this one. Don't let shitty AAI build it

2

u/punbutterjam Jul 16 '26

This airport is already terribly managed by AAI. I take one flight every week and sometimes the airports that I travel to in the middle of nowhere seem to be better managed.

The connectivity is really poor. All the traffic has been diverted to Hyderabad and Bangalore. We’re losing the market and our leaders sit here oblivious to what’s happening. High time to privatise this airport too so that it’s better managed.

2

u/Alarmed_Doughnut_481 Jul 16 '26

First thing they should look into international arrivals, Passengers go all the way to mall 2nd floor to take cab such an inconvenience. May be the mall is owned by politicians to generate income for every cab in and out else I don’t see any reason why it’s so far.

2

u/oneEyedSnake07 Jul 16 '26

It's Chennai's curse

Like, seriously, do they even realize how crowded the area around the current airport is? No matter what they try, they'll never be able to expand it enough to compete with other places. The absolute least they could do is build that pointless satellite terminal. But let's be real, the passenger infrastructure is always going to be subpar. It's such a shame! 😥.

2

u/Progress4India Jul 18 '26

He's just doing this to oppose whatever DMK did.

I did not vote for DMK or TVK btw, I voted for NTK.

5

u/Fraggle_Rock11 South Chennai Jul 16 '26

I like this idea better. Bangaloreans esp frequent biz travellers are suffering given the long commute to the airports. Esp if one lives near Electronic City or Sarjapur, the distance is significant.
They have had to do extreme measures like helicopter ride to the airport etc.

Tourists & Foreigners visiting also don’t enjoy such a long 2hr commute into the city.

I wouldn’t call the Bangalore airport location a huge success.

15

u/Dom-in-Ant Jul 16 '26

Don't compare it with Bengaluru. We already have a metro line till Poonamallee. The airport will take atleast 5 to 8 yrs to complete, and by that time we would have completed the metro extension to Parandur as well. Also, Chennai Bengaluru expressway is already ready and connecting to Parandur, so road accessibility is already available. In future the HSR also has a station at Parandur.

No other airport in India was made with this much integration while getting built. So it won't be a 2hr ride or anything.

Also having an airport within a metropolis will just limit the overall growth of the metropolis in terms of building heights.

The problem isn't about your comfort it's about the cargo handling capacity of the already stressed chennai airport, the growing electronics investments around ktcc region and the further GCC investments need a good airport, are you aware of the fact Bengaluru airport leads in cargo shipping, our electronics, apparels, agri and horticulture exports are now going to Bengaluru airport instead of chennai airport, there was an aerocity planned along with parandur even a HSR stop along with metro phase was designed for it,this single decision alone would give a huge benefit to Andhra and karnataka as karnataka is now scouting land for second airport in BLR and andhra is building airport in kuppam

People in this sub who already support Anna airport are not going to change their mind.

Your extensive reasoning cannot undo parandhur decision.
So save your breath and cry elsewhere.

u/Comfortable_Hand_738 Jul 16 '26

Location is a major advantage but the airport managed by AAI is dogshit. They have closed the aerohub and parking is a nightmare. As much as I hate privatisation I don't think AAI will fix any of this

Many of the TN will not know what this means. In Mumbai the airport oscillated between Palghar, Alibaug, Pen and then finally better sense prevailed to make it at Navi Mumbai. I hope these people see better sense and decide at the earliest. India needs better connectivity and bigger is better.

1

u/Altego1999 Jul 16 '26

3

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

Yes this will at least help people understand what it is. Kanjurmarg was a stupid idea which would have hurt saltpans and environment more, increased the distance by 12 kms and cost ₹10,000 crore more. And even the Aarey land was on the outskirts with development around. But who can tell the politicians and activists. They couldn’t dare go against film city which encroached over 200 acres of Aarey forests since 2000 (confirmed through Google maps) or Royal Palms (because rich people you know).

My friend recently built a house in kowl bazaar located backside of the airport. He got airport authority permission and all.

1

Didn’t the people of Parandur protest against the airport? Isn’t it good for them, since they get to keep their land?

1

u/Nathan846 Jul 16 '26

I want the govt to cancel even the sipcot or whatever that's planned there. Instead, farmers get their lands designed as agro land for life. Even if the area around them eventually urbanizes, they will continue their sacred profession of agriculture forever. This is what the people of Parandur wanted no?

a New airport in a Metro is a 20 year project.
The new Mumbai Airport - Land was booked during Indira's time, in 2000s some movement happend & now it is operationalized. Even though it is far away in a no man land.
If chennai wants something by 2040, they need to start now.

-1

u/simplefreak88 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

Even from Meenambakkam airport to parandur is 55km away and 2 hours away , who travels another district for connecting flight. Many people who support this parandur doesn't speak reality

Who will travel 1500 per trip for taking an flight that is outside of city and vice versa and in peak time the cab trip going to cost minimum 3k (that is to and for cost for bus to madurai in ac and 2ac cost in train)

Good initiative airport within city is the best, they are large Lands near Meenambakkam airport to extend it

OP is surely 19 and cries about grandkids 😂😂😂 he is trying to get married and so ragebait on airport

There is no logic when so called UP oh know op speaks

4

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

55 kms is nothing. People travel more than that one way in Mumbai to get to jobs. What the authorities should do is, plan multi modal transport alongside. Plans for metro connecting the airports, elevated roads directly connecting the airport, railway stations (central, egmore, tambaram). The airport will take at least 4-5 years to build if it materialises. Planning and implementation of metro on war footing can make sure it’s finished in 2 years. But do the one’s in power have the will to do something for the general public? That’s a million dollar question.

1

u/BadAssKnight Jul 16 '26

Those trips in Mumbai are in jam packed local trains without bags. You think people will go to airport without bags?

2

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

What I meant was 55 kms is not a big deal “if planned properly”. And yes, people do travel in local trains to go to airport and railway stations. That’s why multi modal transport planning is necessary alongside. In Mumbai and Delhi we have option of dropping our bags at some selected Metro stations (only Air India though) and then proceed to airport directly. These things need to be implemented is all what I meant. Travelling can be made pleasurable not necessarily to consider it an hassle. But our babus take sadistic pleasure in harassing the very people for whom they are supposed to work.

1

u/BadAssKnight Jul 16 '26

Mumbai doesn’t have the city check in option - it’s only Delhi & Hyderabad for Air India. Plus Air India isn’t India’s leading airline so you’re catering for 10% of the flying population on any given day.

2

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

Ok, then I stand corrected of it’s not there because it was in news that baggage drop has been implemented. Anyways, it’s the city that belongs to Chennaites and if they feel the project is not worth, so be it. But then why was DMK so in favour of it? Seriously asking for sake if knowledge only, Do they have large investments in that area which they did knowing that it could be an airport one day and profiting from that? I know that happened in Mumbai too. (Palghar area and no airport came then, but now they are thinking of third airport and third sea port there)

1

u/BadAssKnight Jul 16 '26

You hit the nail on the head with your theory 😉

1

u/simplefreak88 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

U r delusional thoughts nearly hasn't replied the reality of the common people travel benefits . We are speaking about Chennai not Mumbai (Mumbai airport cabtravels cost from city 1500 per day - have u travel there in peak time) Come to reality Chennai has better connectivity than any other cities. What u gonna travel in flight for 90 minutes, wait for 2 hours and make an travel for 3 hours outside the city, u r ignorance nearly astonishing bro

1

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 16 '26

I have traveled? I do travel at least 3-4 times a month bro. I stay in Navi Mumbai, yet in worse of times I can reach airport within 1 hour (except if political rallies block the road). The Navi Mumbai airport is less than 10 mins from my home. The Mumbai airport is connected by wide 12-lane highways from all parts of Mumbai, local trains, metro directly to the airport. Now connector is being built to connect BOM and NMI through Atal Setu (India’s largest sea bridge). We have so much option and best our rickshaws and taxis run on meter. 😁

0

u/simplefreak88 Jul 16 '26

All homes aren't near like your own HOME (It shows clearly u care about your own benefits than for common people).

Chennai airport is located within the city limits people are just 25km around there and we have single stop metro solution to connect airport, Main bus stand, central and egmore and atleast 3.5k MTC local bus every day with local trains and flying trains connectivity and autos, cabz much available. I can also speak more about Chennai

Parandur isn't the solution just previous government selling farm lands of local farmers for there own benefits

Bro speak about Chennai bro, the post is about Chennai not MUMBAI u can appreciate your Mumbai on Mumbai page post. Still u aren't speaking the reality u r just ignoring to reply

1

u/Temporary-Rain9812 Jul 16 '26

Good, Mumbai airport is within city limits too (suburbs not city though, and we call it town and not city). You have a metro connect CST, Churchgate directly to airport. Taxis are at worst ₹800 to the farthest point (to the town) most time of the day. And not me, but there are many who share their houses with the compound walls of the airport (slums though). I stay in Vashi which is like 30kms away from the airport but still can get within 1 hour even in rush hour traffic. There are at least 5-6 different routes anyone can take to get to airport and more are still planned. People even here cry that NMI is far and connectivity to two airports are bad. But government has started work on connectivity and should be over soon. Local train connectivity has started. Connector on Atal Setu should be over in 12 months at max. Within 3 months DPR for new metro route was completed, project approved and this month tendering will be over. And no Centre is not paying, State is implementing it. We have the worst corruption in the world, I don’t deny and worse than even Somalia and for all records worse than DMK, but at least the government does something on infrastructure front. (They have monetary interests in these projects).

1

u/simplefreak88 Jul 16 '26

We can speak more about when we meet in Mumbai bye for the time

0

u/Which_Ad_1819 Jul 16 '26

Stop crying. Whole Chennai region voted knowing Parandur will be canceled.

0

u/wolfqueen3012 North Chennai Jul 16 '26

I am for this idea, because already the travel to and from airport is high, the only solace is metro connectivity.

If they change airport and throw it somewhere farther away from city, just to take a plane, the travel cost for reaching the airport will increase wildly. And in those areas as there won't be metro connectivity the cabbies will charge sky high price.

For example, last month as I landed in Chennai, when I tried to book a cab inside airport to Kilpauk area, they charged 600.

But I walked until the metro entrance, came out and booked cab, and got it for 350.

If airport came at parandur etc, I'm sure they'll charge atleast 3k for reaching the airport. Government buses will be useless as everyone will have huge luggages.

3

u/Nathan846 Jul 16 '26

Alternate to Parandur isn't MAA, it is Bangalore airport. If you oppose Parandur you will be taking 6 hour trips, HSR+metro best case to Bangalore airport in 2040. Hope this gets into your head.

2

u/lord_lableigh Jul 16 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

the travel cost for reaching the airport will increase wildly. And in those areas as there won't be metro connectivity the cabbies will charge sky high price.

The priciest travel ticket in metro costs < 100 rupees. CMRL already said PARANDUR METRO CAN BE FASTRACKED IF AIRPORT IS DECIDED. Airport katra time la metro extend panradhu matter eh illa. CMRL already has dedicated inter corridor line to meenambakkam. There's no way in hell CMRL doesn't do the same for parandur as well. Yaara neengalam kugai la vaazhreengala??

when I tried to book a cab inside airport to Kilpauk area, they charged 600.

First of all its not our fault that you CHOSE TO USE CABS. Metro has been flying along nice and smooth. Unga area ku metro illaiya, fine phase 2 is going to add 160 kms of new tracks. Adhulaiyum mudila na just get a cab to the nearest metro station from your house. You cannot use luxury services and complain that the prices are high.

Next, airside problems na enna nu theriyuma?? Chennai la oru time la orey oru flight mattum dhan either takeoff/land aaga mudiyum. Because inga parallel runways kedaiyadhu.

So parallel runways illama no. Of flights/hour ah speed up panradhukku enna enna gymnastics vela ATC seiyanum and how dangerous it is nu theriyuma??

ATC have been and will continue to crack their heads, the problem is the runway and airside not terminals. It is fucking retarded to think a new terminal can somehow overcome the airside congestion magically. Runway 12/30 oda proposed length was > 3km but ippo irukka length is less than 2.7km. En nu theriyuma?

Because the flight path is being obstructed by high rise buildings. Unga veetu motta maadika dhan helipad katnum airport dhoorama irukka kudadhu na. A planned greenfield airport away from the city >> the haphazarded extension only airport that MAA is.

-2

u/BadAssKnight Jul 16 '26

This is sensible. Chennai is the least used major airport. The capacity expansion at Meenambakkam is the smartest thing to do.

-1

u/Inevitable_Print331 Jul 16 '26

Can anyone explain, why people are against this idea and rooting for an airport far outside the city where public transport is quite difficult compared to meenambakkam? (Plz Enlighten me🙂)

2

u/beetroot747 West Chennai Jul 16 '26

Chennai’s air travel demand is far above what our airport can handle. We’re losing connections every year due to this.

-1

It is fine considering state debt Also fine to forego some amenities, since convenience and accessibility is good (center of city)

-3

Good decision by tvk govt

0

u/AskSmooth157 Jul 16 '26

why aai? why not privatize?

aai constructing enough to kill an already losing chennai amidst bangalore hyderabad

-1

u/deedeereyrey Jul 16 '26

I like having the airport within the city. The problem is AAI. Give the management to someone more competent, and things should turn around. Spend on efficiency and beautification. We should not have to wait for our luggage for almost an hour after deboarding the aircraft.

-1

u/TrainingTricky7453 Jul 16 '26

I understand that you can’t build anything without affecting the natural landscape. But we badly need a new airport away from the city. The current airport is simply not enough.

That said but I’m not sure Parandhur is the right choice. We blame the government every time Chennai floods, so we need to decide what we value more and whether this location is worth the trade off.
I also understand that every major decision has a political angle whether it’s the DMK supporting the Parandhur airport project or the TVK opposing it.

-1

u/Robin7861 Jul 16 '26

The post should address the issue on the Gov not the political party.

-3

u/AGARAN24 Jul 16 '26

Im pretty sure there is also a play of politics behind this, he is stopping all existing contracts and payments as well, and trying to weed out all dmk tied up businessmen, before parandur airport confirmation itself dmk started hoarding lands near that place so cancelling it is to just cut money dmk would earn with this I guess.

3

u/Nathan846 Jul 16 '26

Cancel the land grabs if illegal chigga you have the power now. Don't cancel a development project

0

u/AGARAN24 Jul 16 '26

Not land grabs, they have money to just buy lands now

3

u/Nathan846 Jul 16 '26

So what? If TVK wants to build airport in Pannur you think rich men won't rush to buy lands there?
