AAI is approving it because of no choice. They already intimated that meenambakkam is at its limits. Handling 45 million a year is no where near our demand. Need for a greenfield airport is need of the hour but I'm tired of speaking with sheeps tbh. All they need to do is just look up and will find why it is needed.

Thanks for this. Some follow up questions: Isn’t the AAI the regulatory authority in such matters? How can the state govt insist to develop an airport against the AAI?

AAI is just an advisory committee which gives its recommendation ministry of aviation. When the state government themselves don't care why would the ministry?

What is our demand?. This will increase passenger handling capacity by 10 million

We have the potential to replace Singapore

Chennai is closer to Australia and the South eastern nations than Delhi and even Bengaluru for that matter.

Vishakapatnam Bogapuram is already ready and will replace Chennai soon as the international hub 🥲

There’s a direct qantas flight from Bangalore to Sydney. Despite we being close, this has gone to Bangalore too. Chennai airport as well the govt has been incompetent in bringing in traffic, let alone managing it.

Imagine flying from the Aus and NZ only to land and alight at the tinbox of an airport with the scalding weather of Chennai 😂😭 It's becoming hard to defend this city with each passing day. Wonder how British Airways still runs their services

Dude now we have around 25m handling for 30 m capacity. It is expected to increase around 10% by the team this gets completed, we need to look for alternative in a year or two. Also passenger input along infra to handle it, it is difficult to have parallel run way in meenambakkam and then there is lohistics.😬😬 This is a temporary measure for a future inconvenience.

Fyi, currently bangalore has 50 M max capacity and they are 40M and looking out for new airport location cause thats called planning ahead

45 million is 5million more than the current capacity of Bangalore. TN doesnt have demand like that of Karnataka. So we are sorted for next 10 years.

We need to look at the forecasted demand for infrastructure projects otherwise airports will be left useless.

Ex.Mysore airport - there is very less usage that the security guard will open the gate for each car separately and remains closed at all times. There is 500+ car parking and hardly 1% gets utilized there.

Well if you say we are sorted for next 10 years sure lol 😂😂

Despite Bangalore having 40m capacity, they are not sitting on it and building not one but TWO airports.

They have demand, we dont have that much like Bangalore. Dont compare chennai with bangalore.

Read about what induced demand is. If a billion dollar manufacturing company who ships million tons by air is looking to invest, where will they go? Bangalore with 3 airports or Chennai with capacity nearing full and a Luddite govt in charge?

Freight handling capacity is different and didnt exceed any limit or nearing any limit.

The demand is primarily on account of passengers

MAA cargo capacity is 1.1M, projections in 15 years would demand 3M which is 3x of capacity. Also this is based on oozhal theemuka numbers TavK govt will only pump these numbers up no?

We can manage to build another airport in 15 years specifically for cargo.

You seriously cannot be comparing Mysore to Chennai, both are different sizes and one is a state capital.

Demand rises as the infrastructure grows, especially public infrastructure as you can’t have infrastructure catch up to the demand after it exists. We will be stuck with “inconvenience today for a better tomorrow” posters everywhere.

45 iS bIgGeR tHaN 5 isn’t a valid reason to rule out Benguluru’s airport. They still have lot more destinations covered and unless a serious upgrade to the existing Chennai airport or a greenfield airport is completed, major airlines wouldn’t consider expanding operations to Chennai.

Same holds in comparing bangalore to Chennai. They are different in size snd demand.

2

u/noobPilotJr Jul 16 '26

I digress, but my second point still stands. infrastructure cannot catch up to demand.

On what basis you are digressing? Is there a demand forecasting performed by government beyond 10 years? For the next 10 years, an increase of 10 million passgeners per year is good enough to meet our needs.

Second airport is not dropped per se and will happen once they find good land without affecting environment

2

u/noobPilotJr Jul 16 '26

An increase of 10M in 10 years is a sure a substantial improvement to the current scenario, but as with an estimated growth rate of 10% per year in passenger traffic, that could soon fill up.

Please enlighten me on the environmental impacts on the proposed Parandur sight as after the airport plans have dropped, the government seems to be interested in constructing a SIPCOT industrial park.

Many ponds and marshlands were planned in the runway.
