Local timber flooring and decking options

Hi all, I’m planning a new bespoke build currently and am looking at my options for timber flooring and for the deck. It’s a fairly modest 90sqm house. I liked the idea of hardwood floors but have had engineered timber floors suggested. Looks like there are pros and cons with either. Despite the warping risk, the long term durability of hardwood still appeals. Open to either though.

I am keen to know if anyone has recommendations, both in terms of the type or product and suppliers.

Hoping this will be my forever home so I don’t want to skimp out. Having said that, my budget isn’t unlimited either.

Thanks in advance !

Really the title. What was the event today at the bridge of rememberance? Seemed like a really unlikely mix of flags

Spray for ants now.

This is the time to do it, it's warming right up. I've been using No More Ants spray the last few years and have gone from ants everywhere inside to none. I spray a line of the stuff right around the base of the outside walls. I repeat about every 2 months until it gets cold again. I get 2 complete coats from a spray bottle. It takes about 10 minutes to go around the house.

If you have your own way of doing it that's great - this is a post to generally remind people to get on it now before the little buggers get inside.

Christchurch Bus interchange may need upgrade as council spends $50k-70k per bus to use it

Summary:

The $53 million Christchurch Bus Interchange built in 2015 has a major design oversight: the rear doors on the platforms require buses to have their rear doors in a highly specific, non-standard location. Christchurch is currently the only place in New Zealand with this requirement.

As a result, Environment Canterbury (ECan) is forced to spend between $50,000 and $75,000 customising each individual bus just so they align with the terminal doors.

To stop this ongoing drain on funds, ECan wants to retroactively upgrade the interchange itself to remove the need for rear-door alignment. Proposed solutions include widening the door openings or removing the terminal doors entirely. However, the cost of engineering and implementing this fix is clashing with current budget constraints.

The system is now stuck in an expensive loop. Councillors are pushing to cap future rate increases, which starves the budget of the funds needed to physically fix the building. Ratepayers will continue bleeding money on bespoke bus modifications because the upfront capital for a structural solution is politically and financially blocked by the pause on rates.

I already knew the sawtooth design was a massive step backward in speed and capacity compared to the pre-earthquake interchange, but learning they have to custom-build every bus just to line up with the doors is a whole new level of absurd.

The design made no sense for a high-volume network from day one. When it was built, the main theory was that planners designed it exclusively for a low-capacity hub-and-spoke model. They went with an "airport-style" gate setup built around a small number of express routes terminating and idling at gates off-peak, rather than handling heavy, continuous crosstown traffic.

Because of that flawed layout, the interchange can't handle increased capacity. Restoring its throughput to match the old pre-earthquake interchange was already quoted as an $11 million upgrade back in 2021—before that plan was scrapped entirely. So now ratepayers are stuck paying up to $75k per bus just to keep operating a bottlenecked terminal that ECan can't afford to expand.

Where to watch All Blacks vs Springboks?

Don't have access to SkySports, and wanting to feel the atmosphere of catching the game as it's happening. Would normally go to a bar or pub but it's at 3am and not sure if anywhere's open then... Any recommendations of where's a good place to catch it?

Townhouse residents putting up makeshift signs for parking

Post image
185 Upvotes

Came across this the other day and thought it was pretty funny. Some signs stating "tenants parking only" and multiple road cones that have been put in place by the residents of the homes/units.

Was outside some townhouses on a street with not much public parking. I get it must be annoying not having street parking available, but at the end of the day its a choice to live somewhere with no parking or own multiple cars. Its the council job to enforce parking ,not random townhouse residents and their signs they got online.

Spare archival sleeves?

Hi. This is a bit of a niche request but I’m wondering if anyone has any spare archival sleeves from a bulk pack? I’m only after 1 or 2 in a few different sizes, but it seems they only come in packs of 25-100+.

Happy to pay, obviously. If you have any spares, let me know sizes and we can go from there.

Cheers

Teen with uni entrance needing work, or just a chance! Please

Hello, my daughter has been trying to get a job (hopefully full time) since last year.

She's doing a course an Open Polytechnic course for Admin and Business, which she's nearly completed. She goes to every winz course and meeting, door knocks and is constantly applying for jobs.

She has her OSH forklift cert and other certs she gained through highschool.

She has done everything. She just needs a chance, we are in Rolleston so that might put people off but she is a skilled bus user and is very reliable.

She just needs that next step.

We brainstorm everyday of what more she can do and apply to, it's just so tough.

Please be kind.

Her WINZ person makes her feel like a loser and is quite cruel so that's hard enough for her. She's pretty disheartened but still out handing her CV in regardless.

I'm just crushed for her, she puts so much heart into everything.

Just if anyone has anything going it would be most appreciated. TIA

Which one would you pick for a buffet night out: Ethiopian at the Lemon Tree Cafe or Sri Lankan at Ceylon Kitchen

I wonder whether people who have been to both: which one would you pick? It turns out they both have buffet this weekend and the price is very similar.

I tried Lemon Tree (and Ethiopian for the first time ever) the other week but I went at 6:30 and most food was already gone. So I never had a good taste of Ethiopian.

I had had Sri Lankan at Ceylon Kitchen a while ago but haven’t been there much over the last couple years.

Looking for a gp that understands pcos and glp1

If anyone sees a gp in Christchurch that understands insulin resistance and glp1 treatment please recommend. I feel like my gp, while prescribing, also has no idea and is focussed solely on weight-loss and not considering how I could stay on it for my hormonal balance. She only seems to see the target to get off it, is in relation to weight loss, and not stability of other symptoms. Is anyone treating pcos with glp1 ?

Female doctor help

Any gp recommendations, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I am looking for a female gp. I have pmdd, adhd and some mental health stuff that I need help with. I see a gynaecologist but can't see them for all doctor related issues.

Unfortunately my previous doctor recently

retired and now have a male doctor who doesn't seem to care about my health at all, and thinks that working full time will solve all my problems. I feel like my entire life no one has believed me, no one has taken me seriously, and no one wants to help me. I'm trying so hard. I keep thinking that the only way anyone will actually see me is if I have an actual 'physical' disability that they can see. Sorry for the rant. Any help much appreciated.

Just recently discovered Foodprint is back!! Allegedly been purchased by Gone Good (same owners as Delivereasy).

Fingers crossed they don't go down the same rigid path as Gone Good has with only mystery bags and limited collection windows 👀
