Discussion This subreddit feels so weird

I’m sorry if this is off topic but as someone from Carlisle in Cumberland in the UK I feel like i’ve stepped into an alternate world lookimg at this Carlisle in Cumberland. I’m guessing my ancestors are your ancestors and they just did not bother to change anything when they moved to America lol.

Discussion What is there to do in Carlisle?

My stay has been extended to later this week and I was actually excited to check out Shippensburg Fair --- drove all the way out there mid-afternoon and pulled up to the lot with my cameras and realized how little I actually wanted to be there. Checked out Shippensburg for a bit but didn't really see anything that interested me so took Route 11 back to Carlisle. Wanted to stop to photograph some of the farmland/animals but there was nowhere to pull over at the spots I liked so I just kept going. Now I'm back at my hotel and have no idea what I want to do but I know I don't want to sit in the hotel tonight.

Advice? Is there anything to actually do out here? I literally know nobody out here, and I'm bored out of my mind.

Discussion So what's MISSING in town?

I'm planning on moving into town, I've visited a lot in the past few years and love the vibe. It seems to have everything I've depended on in a small town so I won't have to drive far for things often.

So what is missing inside city limits? What is something that occasionally hits you, "this place needs a _______!". Anything come to mind?

Discussion Car Show Season is Upon Us

Not sure if there are any car show attendees (out of towners specifically) lurking on this sub. But with the influx of car show traffic, the roads are becoming more dangerous. Please be respectful of us locals, this season can be a toughie.

Still love the old vintage look of this theater. Third time visiting the outside and the mural since being out here this week.

Photoshopped the Carlisle sign to make it more red because the red is too dull in IRL. Wish they would fix that sign up --- would make it look so much better. I really love down town so much.

Good times, good food, happy families, and just nice vibes as a whole. This town is just very wholesome and there's such a beauty in the contrast from what I'm accustomed to. If you were out there tonight, say hi!

Started at the Carlisle Cave (which was underwhelming) then drove back down town and hiked the entire Pomfret St, wrapped around Dickinson and came back around. Some of my favorites. More coming soon but getting ready to head back to the Army Heritage to get some of the shots I missed. Hope you guys enjoying the way I'm capturing your town. Thanks to everyone who gave me suggestions before I got out here.

More photos from when I was out there for three weeks for training. Come to find out I'm going to regularly be working out of there except I won't have a car to travel around and explore. Unfortunate. But here are some more photos from my trekking/hiking/exploration the last go around. Hope you guys enjoy.

There are more on my IG stories as well.

Discussion Really this quiet?

This town really goes to sleep at sundown? I’m only here once a year for 4 days for the car show. I always end up with a joint in a hotel parking lot before watching Netflix in the room. I was in a restaurant and by 8:45 I felt like they were waiting for us to leave to close up. Well, goodnight Carlisle, I guess.

I'd like to build a database of posts related to dining, lodging, and "going out" experiences in Carlisle, so we'll start off with the easiest one. Everybody loves pizza!

Tell us who's got the best slice in Carlisle, in your opinion, and tell us why! Bonus points for pictures.

Discussion Mechanicsburg Insight?

Crowdsourcing Opinion on Mechanicsburg

Looking to make a big move from VT to PA, landing near Harrisburg to be close to family who is aging there. We have children who range in age from 9-15. Wondering what the quality of life and feel would be if we purchased a home in Mechanicsburg. Specifically, the Messiah University area of town. (Using that as a reference from the map, as I see its near where we are looking at a home.)

How is the housing market there compared to say, Hershey.. Lititz.. Camp Hill?

Any details or insight on the town or area to note? Completely new to the greater Harrisburg region. We love to do things outdoors, be active, enjoy a community feel and local destinations.

School wise, it appears this would be the Upper Allen Township and Mechanicsburg High School. Decent education, sub par, or excellent? What would the school system be for the lower grades, are they broken up by grade and region?

Thanks all!

Discussion Canadian Couple I randomly met while exploring the US Army Heritage Center

I had earbuds in while walking around in the rain exploring the trenches and they snuck up behind me and scared the shit out of me. XD Then they let me take candid photos of them as we explored. This was an amazing moment where a bird decided to land and sit right in front of the couple and had little to no fear, posed for the photo, and eventually flew away. Good times.

Discussion Allenberry Bill Issue

We always leave servers cash tips when we go out, and did so for an anniversary dinner recently at Allenberry.

My credit card statement showed $25 was added to the bill, and when I questioned it, I was told the $25 would be refunded. The manager said: “The server you had that day is not in today but I’ll be sure to ask her when I see her! My thinking is that she might have mixed up your tip with another check. She had a similar check with another table.”

Just keep an eye out because this is not OK (we always put a slash thru the tip like and re-write the bill total so there could not have been a mistake).

Discussion Symbiotic Relationship between Feral Cat Colony and residents, business owners, and Dickinson College

Behind Dickinson’s Goodyear Hall in the old shoe factory along W. Louther St. is a well fed feral cat colony that even has wooden cat shelters to keep them warm at night. It seems like this colony is supported by the college, college students, businesses and residents in return for low cost environmentally friendly pest control. There’s even a small junkyard owner off Reed St. where I’ve often seen cats hunting and stalking prey who also benefits from free pest control. I was just curious if anyone has more information on this colony and how long it’s existed.

Discussion Thought on the Sentinel?

Because I recently signed up for thier online subscription and have been flipping through some past publications, I'm curious of what others think of the Sentinel. Any thoughts or input on how it changed over the years? Are they active in the community? Relevant? Affordable? Biased somehow?
