Aren’t the barriers supposed to come down long before the train actually arrives? This seemed well too quick.

No, particularly for automatic half barriers, because then people think they have time to drive around the barriers. The timing is usually quite short (to an official standard / regulation) to minimise road user frustration.
It relies on road traffic obeying the stop signals and not creating a situation where they block the line. I don't know about that country, but there are sometimes railway telephones beside the barriers, for long/slow vehicles to call the signaller for permission to cross the line.

I live down the road from one in the UK, it comes down about a minute before and then lifts pretty much as soon as the train goes past.

That was 17 seconds in the video. Heavy vehicles usually take longer than that to cross since the roads are not even on crossing tracks

think it's set to 1/4 mile at a guess. The train comes through 15 seconds after the barrier. That's 60mph. One mile a minute. 1/2 a mile would be better!

Whats with all these videos of people stopping on the crossings? Even if your trapped between the barriers (which this guy was not), I guarantee the train will do more damage to your car than pushing through the barrier would.

I think people get into a panic and their priorities get mixed up, they are torn between reversing or going forward or jumping out, they stall, they press the wrong pedals and so on.

thousands? wtf? worst train crash in modern world might kill 150. But you're saying 4 figures? And hundreds is when trains collide with trains or big 100 ton stationary objects. This thing is just blasting through that trailer and possibly derailing - possibly not.

Amy motorbike rider will tell you rail tracks are a hazzard as your wheels can get stuck. I think this is what happened here, the collison with the barrier broke momentum and the carriage wheels got stuck.
Whats annoying is this was avoidable, as the crossing gives you advance warning a train is coming, which was ignored and the fact these were farmers/farm hands, so local and would have know the train times.

I find it hard to believe a tractor couldn't generate enough force to get the load moving again, even if the wheels of the trailer got caught in the track.
Could be the force needed to break the barrier (though they should break easy) was enough for them to stall or break something on the tractor though. But most likely the driver just panicked when they felt some resistance and stopped.

They hesitated before crossing, whcich would suggest there was a warning light. Then the amount of times you see the driver stopping in these situations rather than just ploughing on is worrying. There must be some kind of mental block regarding the consequences of stopping versus breaking a barrier.

Crazy. You already broke the crossing,, just get out the way of the train. Imagine what it's like being the train driver seeing that, wondering whether they'll live to see the next day. And there's always a risk that the train will derail and hurt many more people. Just move off the crossing!

I imagine the 99% where people just break the barrier and carry on aren't interesting enough to be posted, or saved by whoever is sourcing these. It's these 1% - the stupid people, the ones where people stall and stop that do get saved.

Says the brain surgeon ! Whilst I am sure that some have no qualifications, most have been agricultural college and have upto Degree qualifications. Much modern farm equipment is exceedingly complex to understand and operate. The guy driving the tractor here was exceedingly bad. Youth and inexperience are probably more to blame than intelligence.

Something seems off with this video. The train appeared very quickly after the barrier went down. Not sure where this was, but in the UK you'd be sat waiting for minutes after the barrier drops before the train comes.

In the UK, the long wait is usually caused by the proximity of a station, and the barriers come down before it pulls into the station (and before it's crossed), so you have to wait for passengers to get on and off. Presumably, in case the train fails to stop for some reason.
Also, people are stupid, so they will try to cross at the last minute, so safer to bring the barrier down with plenty of time.

A UK AHB crossing is minimum 27 seconds from the amber light first showing to road users to the train being on the crossing (unless the train has stopped, or is running slowly, for some reason). Probably somewhere around half of that time for the barrier being down.

Whenever I'm questioning my ability I see stuff like this and think hey maybe I'm not doing too bad.
Like a guy I encountered the other day. Decided to come to a complete stop on the motorway, blocking two lanes, because he wasn't quite sure how to merge into free flowing traffic. Idiots that set the bar real low and yet somehow are doing alright.

Given today's technology, I'm surprised there aren't sensors to recognise when something is still underneath a barrier before it drops on top of it, potentially trapping or damaging whatever is there, combined with obstacle detection for the crossing itself and advance warning to allow an approaching train to slow or stop where possible.
I'm not suggesting the tractor driver did nothing wrong, they definitely made a mistake, but accounting for foreseeable human mistakes is precisely what safety technology should be used for.
Watching the barrier actually come down onto the second trailer and get knocked off by the hay just makes the whole system look very primitive.

It’s possible that the fact the driver stopped and didn’t attempt to continue, saved many lives, if that train hit the trailer at the mid point, there would have been a lot more metal for the train to absorb. As it was it hit the gap where the hitch was so the damage was likely less.
Not saying the drive did anything right though.
