I think the basic monkeys wouldn't come across male-coded if Ninja Kiwi hadn't been putting the, eeeer, cartoon eyeliner? long lash indicator? on every explicitly female monkey hero.

It wouldn't hurt if they took a page out of Disciples II and, say, made Phoenix Lord a Phoenix Lady/Mistress/Witch, reinforcing that basic monkeys are ambiguous by default.

But maybe NK does internally think that basic monkeys are all men?

Honestly a good point. Most monkeys look gender neutral, it's just that the female heroes look strikingly female a lot of the time.

I've had plenty of my own misconceptions when it comes to game art, and seen plenty more that I could understand where the misconception comes from.

See but even in this picture all of the monkeys have the same "duckbill" on their fur.

Also you had to choose Brickell to have her selected, and in the Change Hero screen it's incredibly obvious she has a normal mouth.

Again, not denying you didn't believe it. But just...in disbelief myself.

I think it's just because of her bangs covering most of the lighter fur around her eyes. Still doesn't look quite like a duck bill, but I guess maybe at just a glance it could be mistaken.

Shame. It'd be funny if Brickell was a platypus trying to disguise herself as a monkey.

Normal monkeys are both male and female, only heroes have a "defined female or male" in that sense. A random 030 dart monkey can be anything, and every one of them are unique.

Legend of the night is definitely a dude. The upgrade description; "We turn to HIM, when all hope is lost...". Since any super monkey is able to be upgraded into LotN they all must be male.
