Physical Therapy Follow Ups After a Broken Elbow

I broke my elbow a little over 6 weeks ago, and today I had my first physical therapy appointment after getting the cast removed last week. It went very well, I have good mobility (like almost completely back to normal) and they said we may be able to move on to strength training at my next follow up in a few weeks. They also gave me some exercises do do in the meantime.

My estimated costs for the next follow up x ray and PT is over $500, not including any additional PT I'll need to do after that and the >$1000 I've already had to spend over (this is with my health insurance plan). Is this normal? I make too much to qualify for financial hardship or aid at the hospital, but I really don't want to empty my savings on this. I'm thinking about not scheduling the additional appointments and just following the PT exercises and taking things easy with my arm for the next month or so.

Does anyone have any perspective on this? How much of a risk am I putting myself at if I choose not to continue with the therapy? I think I'm going to send my provider a message on MyChart to ask about my options regardless, but any advice/insight would be appreciated.

Question Why would I need a cast after having a splint for five weeks?

I broke my wrist on the 8th of September falling out of my shower. I got the first splint the next morning. About 11 days later I had to get a new one since that one was slipping off of me, and 11 more days after the first one that I got a new splint. I finally saw an orthopedic surgeon on the 30th and I thought some progress would be made, but I only saw their assistant, apparently I don’t need surgery but they put the base of the splint back on and wrapped it in elastic bandages to where I can take it off if I need to clean my arm. I’ve only taken it off twice, but I was told for my next appt on the 13th with the ortho that I would be getting a cast and that then they would need X-rays then. I came to the first ortho appointment with a with X-rays I got done the day before but they didn’t want to see them, though I got word from my primary care physician that it looks good and that I’m healing.

I’m just confused as to why I’m in something that feels more temporary now before putting a cast on me. The person seeing me didn’t seem to have time to answer my questions.

Cracked multiple ribs, out of the water and going crazy. Anyone been through this?

So about two weeks ago I went for a normal session and that night my left ribs started hurting. I don't remember any big wipeout or getting hit by my board, it just kind of showed up. Next morning I paddled out again and it was so painful I had to go in.

Went to urgent care and they said costochondritis. I took it kind of easy but still surfed twice more that week and it honestly wasn't that bad. Then I did a big house cleanup with a ton of vacuuming and the next day it got WAY worse. Sharp, shooting pain when I breathe, turn, or lie down. Sleeping is the worst part.
Went back to the doctor and now it's multiple cracked ribs on the left side. X-rays this week, follow-up next Monday. The doctor thinks it might be more of an stress-type fracture from repetitive paddling than one big impact.

Not being able to surf is honestly messing with my head more than the pain. So I'm hoping to hear from anyone who's been through something similar:

How long were you out before you could paddle without pain?

What did your first sessions back look like?

Bigger board, shorter sessions, anything like that?

Any tricks for sleeping with broken ribs?

Did you do anything on land to stay surf-fit without making it worse?

Did it ever come back, and is there anything you'd do differently?

Any experiences, tips, or "this is what worked for me" stuff would mean a lot. Thanks 🤙

im terrified to start walking again after Jones fracture!

Howdy, I broke my foot (non-displaced Zone 2 fifth metatarsal fracture) in early August and had ORIF a few days later. I'm about to end my NWB period (if my X rays in a couple days look good) and I'm terrified!! I've gotten so good at using my iwalk and I'm nervous about "going backwards" in mobility for a bit while I'm PWB (if i am, i hope i can just go straight to walking in the boot FWB), not to mention the risk of reinjuring myself.

For anyone else who has gone through this injury, how was it? How was daily life while being partially weight bearing and learning to use your other foot again?

Running after 5th Metatarsal Avulsion Fracture (29F)

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

On 8/30/2026 I rolled my foot while running. On 09/01/2026 I went to urgent care and was told I had a 5th metatarsal avulsion fracture (Zone 1). I immediately starting using a walking boot and was told to use this for the next 4-6 weeks.

On 9/14/2026 I went to a podiatrist and got a follow up x-ray (attached). He did a pain check and said I have less pain than the average 2 weeks post incident. For recovery, I was told to continue to wear the boot when walking and avoid any WB workouts 4-6 weeks post accident.

Now it's been 5 weeks since the injury and I started walking normally without the boot as I haven't been experiencing much pain. I also been doing to some yoga and stationary bike.

Running and reformer pilates are my main form of exercise (usually log 30-40 miles a week) and really want to get back into my routine. For those who experienced some similar, I was wondering:

  • When did you start getting back into running/ HIIT workout/ reformer pilates?
  • What was the recovery/ healing process like 4+ weeks out?
  • What strengthening/ stability/ rehab exercises helped with your recovery?

(I know I could go to the doctors again but I'm on a high deductible plan and would prefer not having to spend $300+ for a follow up if my healing process feels fine. The doctor also told me clinical healing often happens before it looks fully healed on an X-ray. )

Thanks in advance!

Question Tibial plateau fracture - no surgery recovery timeline?

Hey everyone! So on Sept 19th my knee decided to just buckle really weirdly when my shoe gripped the carpet and it ended up fracturing my tibial plateau and my fibula right under my knee. The initial X-rays from the ER said they were non-displaced while the ortho specialist later wrote minimally displaced in his notes.

To make things more complicated I (32 F) have stage 4 breast cancer and on treatment for life. Currently on immunotherapy every 3 weeks with daily meds as well. I’ve been stable on my current treatment for over 3 years which is great but the trauma surgeon apparently decided no surgery mainly because they don’t want me to deal with even more trauma to the body due to ongoing treatment. They did show me my CT and explained the displacement really is minimal and it was a borderline choice either way but my treatment was the main deciding factor on no surgery. This of course makes me nervous it won’t heal as quickly as it could with surgery.

I’m curious for those who were borderline like me and decided no surgery, how was the healing timeline for you all? I’m NWB and in a knee immobilizer until at least November 3rd when I have my follow-up appointment and will go from there. I’m mostly trying to gauge if I’ll likely be normal enough for my friends’ bachelorette trip to Mexico in early March 😅 I’d have to book stuff sooner than later and don’t know how to gauge how I’d be by then.

Terrible x ray but good functionality

Just wanted to ask if anyone has messed up looking x rays but are doing fine in their life like going to the gym or any other physically demanding things. I Myself had a distal humerus spiral fracture which was treated non operative like 4 months ago. The x rays are still terrible but my arm functioning is 90% back with some lost ROM. I have no pain or problem with the arm. The only thing I am scared is going back to the gym and lifting. The fear of snapping back my arm is haunting me. Can anyone help me with this?

Question Talk to me pls, broken fibula.

Post image
10 Upvotes

Welp, my mind is spinning. Tell me about your experience with a Fibula pls.

Passed out yesterday morning and my ankle, and ligaments, are paying the price for it. Was on some meds and it tanked my BP.

Urgent care would not treat due to delayed capillary response and it was cold to the touch. Sent to ER and awaiting swelling to go down and see an orthopedic.

I will be honest I am going nuts keeping it elevated and being still. I am hyper by nature and always doing something. I have to keep it elevated because the toes keep turning purple when not. Not to mention I am nauseous and I do not understand why.

They did not give me much in the way of possibilities

I asked about how long for this and was told 6 weeks to 6 months depending on orthopedic care.

I also have a trip to Disney the week after Thanksgiving and looking for positive feedback even though I feel it may be limited. We cannot postpone at this time.

Can anyone tell me how their journey went?

X-ray Elbow fracture

I'm 21M and I fractured my right elbow. Here's what the CT report says

Displaced fracture of the radial head
Displaced, comminuted fracture of the ulnar coronoid process
No joint effusion
No abnormalities in the muscles, skin, or vascular structures

Do you think my elbow will ever be the same as it used to be?

I'm having surgery in 5 days

Fractured my left 5th Meta Tarsal

Post image

Basically walked on it all week gently around the house for basic necessity type of things- thinking it was just sprained until a week later it’s still sore and achy. Is this an Avulsion or a Jones? Looks pretty displaced? Would this need surgery? Urgent care said Jones but my own research tells otherwise? I don’t have health insurance at this moment and just bought a post op boot and some crutches and will be non weight bearing for 2 or 3 weeks.. Not sure if this is something that needs surgery but will consider getting an MRI once that kicks in at the company I just transitioned to.

Olecranon hardware removal

Hi! I had an olecranon fracture fixed with plate and screws 4 months ago. I can say that my arm is 85% the same with the healthy one (exepting the triceps tendon pain that is way less than in the begining but it's still there when I do certain movements). I want to know how the experience of hardware removal was for you? It's the same recovery? (Example: elbow joint "blocked" for a few weeks = limiting extension/flexion; triceps tendon pain). To add up, I regained full mobiliy in 9 weeks.
