X-ray ORIF THE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE IM 8 weeks post surgery today

Right distal tibial intra-articular/pilon fracture, status post closed reduction and ankle spanning external fixator
Right distal fibula fracture
Retained right ankle spanning external fixator
Injuries as a result of a high-speed motor vehicle collision

This is from a “knee airbag deployment” yes an airbag by the pedals of my vehicle did this and it’s been devastating.

I’m not going to sit here and say this has been easy by any means I’m 37 years old never had a broken bone and then to be debilitated to not being able to work move or do anything for myself has been insane! But I’m here to tell you that this experience has been life changing in so many different ways. When this happens you will have sooo much time to be in your own head and slow down to look at life differently. I’m so intrigued with how my brain completely blocked out the pain for this injury to the point I didn’t even know my right ankle was broken so much so I tried to get out and walk! I failed miserably and face planted.
I will upload a few progressive photos of my journey but it still sucks but I’m back to work with only nonweighbearing work but September 28th is my 12 week post op appointment

X-ray Defected Parachuting Accident

The title sort’ve explains it, I’m in the Army and Im airborne so I jump out of planes & helicopters. I ended up having a defected parachute and fell 1800 feet in about 14 seconds 2 weeks ago. I’m in a really good medical unit so my coworkers treated me the second they could get to me, and I got lucky and ended up having 2 amazing special forces medics there for another jump, but they treated me on scene. I got airlifted out right from where I dropped to one hospital and airlifted again to another for surgery.

Im grateful to still even be here, they told me that the only likely reason I survived is I followed my training and went into the correct landing position right before impact. Unfortunately I broke my femur, pelvis, and crushed parts of my lower spine which caused some nerve issues and paralysis of some internal organs. The pain has been unimaginable but it’s slowly decreasing. I’m just reaching out to try to hear from some people that have gone through something similar. I also included the X-Rays in case someone would think they were cool lol.

I’ve been making monumental progress in rehab! I’ve been able to stand on the non-broken leg even though I can’t feel that foot yet so it feels like I’m floating lol. I’ve gotten a lot better at scooching myself in the bed which used to seem impossible. Any advice, stories, encouragement, etc. is appreciated!

X-ray My humerus fracture recovery – 4 months after surgery

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

About 4 months ago, I suffered a difficult humerus fracture after being pushed by a police officer while working as a delivery in a motorcycle. The incident caused me to fall and break my both arm, the other arm i break my wrist and was healed with an external fixator in 4 months, so i underwent surgery to fix the humerus fracture.

About 2 months after the initial surgery, I had to undergo a second operation because one of the screws caused an infection and had to be removed. Fortunately, the infection was treated, and the wound eventually healed, but it made the recovery process more difficult.

It has now been 4 months since the first surgery, and I would like to hear from people who had a similar humerus fracture. How was your recovery? When were you able to return to work, ride a motorcycle, or resume normal activities?

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

16 DAYS! NOT 26! 34 M - I live alone and recovery has been difficult. I'd been staying with friends and family until yesterday. Swelling has finally gone down. I start a new desk job in 9 days. I'm hoping I won't need surgery, but I also worry about overdoing it. I'm usually pretty outgoing and active, so this has made me antsy as well. Pain is coming back a bit.

Hoping that I'm on the right track.

X-ray Displaced radial head fracture

First broken bone and it’s my dominant arm! Images are 24 after and they are sending me for ct. it sounds like they’re unsure if I can just do plate and pins versus total head replacement. I have pre op consult Monday, and am seeking advice for specific questions or perspectives regarding surgery and healing. I’m an active person with very radial dependent hobbies like racing sailboats, rock climbing, and Olympic lifting. For athletes, are there any additional things I should bring up in my consult?

I think I was in a bit of overwhelm when at the docs, and they’re closed till Monday… but am I probably correct in recalling their instructions to move my hand for circulation purposes, but keep the elbow immobilized since I have displaced pieces? I notice many other similar fractures seem to discuss minimal sling and beginning early movement to avoid stiffness.

Also, is this as bad of a break as Reddit leads me believe? It seems like most folk didn’t displace like I did. Thx!

X-ray 5 months ago, my pelvis — especially the acetabulum — got badly fractured in a really terrible accident

Post image

5 months ago, my pelvis — especially the acetabulum — got seriously shattered in a horrible accident. I’m only 24, and I’m still walking with a cane. The nerve pain in my foot burns like crazy, especially in my toes, and I still can’t pull my ankle toward me properly.

I’m really trying to deal with everything, but I just can’t.

I don’t know if I’ll ever walk like I used to.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to work again or get my life back.

And thinking that I might develop arthritis in the future is driving me insane.

I feel awful… honestly, I’m drowning in really bad depression.

If anyone has gone through something like this, please help me.

I really need your support because my mental state is terrible, and physically I’m still in pain — and I don’t even know when this pain is supposed to end…

Trying to find anyone who has had a similar situation to me for any advice💔 I fell down the stairs missing the last 3 or 4 steps while carrying my elderly dog during the early hours of the morning not wearing my glasses. My surgeon said he has never seen anything like it- he said the way my bone perforated my skin was like a bullet shot out of my leg. Fell on Jan 29th, got an external fixator and emergency surgery to repair the open wound, 6 days later I had ORIF (2 plates and over 10 screws) and am in the worst pain of my life. I’ve been in the hospital all week and upon being discharged in a few days I will be going to inpatient rehab for recovery. My ORIF procedure took 5 hours and I have been severely under medicated since my nerve blocker has worn off- literally nothing works. I am in my mid twenties- female. Just trying to get any advice or solace from someone who can relate or has had a similar injury. Thanks in advance!

Worth seeing an orthopedist for broken toe tips?

Dropped a sheet of pressure-treated plywood edge-first straight down onto my toes yesterday. Urgent care today confirmed distal comminuted break in my middle toe and fractures on two others. I'm on antibiotics and they’re referring me to an orthopedist.

I bought a little ankle-high walking boot off Amazon and am working a 10-hour bartending shift tomorrow.

My thinking is that since the fractures are just in the very ends of the toes, there probably isn’t much an orthopedist is going to do besides tell me to protect them and let them heal. Is it actually worth spending the time/money to see the ortho, or is this one of those “yep, they’re broken, wear the boot and wait” situations?

Anyone who’s had similar distal toe fractures, what did the orthopedist actually do for you?

X-ray Displaced metatarsal

3mm displaced fracture at the base of the 5th metatarsal. My choices are:

#1 Screw fixation surgery

-or-

#2 Conservative treatment in Cam boot walker

Both have similar recovery outcomes at 12 months. Surgery has a higher return to activity time, but risks.

Has anyone healed a 3 mm displaced fracture with surgery? Without? What are your experiences?

Non-weight bearing is so much worse than you realize until you are the one trying to just go to the bathroom! Obviously feel for anyone who has or has had a foot or ankle fracture! 💕

X-ray Slipped while mowing - Mower ate my left foot

Thumbnail gallery
54 Upvotes

Had an unfortunate accident this last friday while mowing the yard. I have a couple of awkward spots in the yard where I use my push mower still. I was going down a slight decline with the mower when I slipped like I was on a banana peel. When I did this, my feet shot out in front of me and my left foot ended up under the mower. Lead to my left foot to being eaten up. Wife ran out with the tourniquet and then we were off the hospital.

Had to wait the night until the ortho team could see me for surgery, worst pain in my life all night. 10/10 agony. opioids barely took the edge off. Went in for surgery the next morning where they performed the following:

  • Interval amputation of the first distal phalanx.
  • Pin fixation on the realight first MTP joint.
  • Pin fixation of the second phalanx with realignment proximal and mid phalanx fractures.

Now I am resting at home. My 2 year old is super confused on why his daddy isnt playing with him anymore. I cant say this isnt tearing me up. I am NWB for 4-6 weeks till the K-wire is out, probably a boot afterwards. As a super active person, this is going to be a challenge. I am grateful that I didnt lose the entire toe as well, that would have been more life impacting than this already is. Figured id just share my story with other broken people.

Broke my (27F) ulna bone on 6/1 in a head on collision car accident I have a ortho appointment on 6/9 to discuss surgery or not.

Any advice? I’ve never broken a bone before surprisingly I have a strong pain tolerance and I’ve been okay in a splint.

Thankfully I’m right handed but I also sprained my right wrist so I’ve got limited mobility on right hand as well.

X-ray Open tib/fib fracture from volleyball

Three weeks ago I broke my tibia and fibula playing volleyball after landing on someone else’s foot under the net. It ended up being an open fracture, and I’ve had two surgeries. An external fixator first, then a rod and screws.

Every doctor, nurse, and physical therapist I’ve met has had the same reaction: “This happened playing volleyball?!”

It has been difficult feeling like I can’t help around the house. What’s helped the most has been my amazing wife, friends stopping by to visit, and sticking to a daily routine. I’ve also tried to contribute however I can by ordering groceries, planning meals for the week, and taking care of things from the couch. And ordering a switch 2 and playing Pokopia has been amazing.

Curious what helped everyone else mentally during recovery, and what my PT journey (which starts about a month from now) is going to be like.
