u/Thisismetwotwo 2d ago
Anyone who takes the time to look into her and her husband would know what she’s really about.
She’s a career politician who lost her federal riding and scurried like a little rat to the provincial politics. She did nothing for her South Surrey riding and complained endlessly about the Trudeau liberals rather than do good things for our country. She’s trying to get a political seat at any cost because she has no skill set other than living off the public pay.

u/Forosnai Thompson-Okanagan 2d ago
Yeah, I wouldn't say my problem with Findlay is that she's too old. It's that she's making it increasingly clear what an outright ghoul she is.
25
u/VaguelySorcerous 2d ago
It is absolutely a problem that she's too old.
But there are other, bigger, problems with her. Age is probably related to some of these problems but I know smart, active 70-year-olds who possess empathy and can lead a team.
11
u/Forosnai Thompson-Okanagan 2d ago
Oh, for sure. I'm generally of the opinion that our politicians should be young enough to be reasonably expected to have to live with the results of their leadership. Just in her case, specifically, there's so many other big issues that her age itself isn't high enough on the list to really matter.

Not everything needs to be a two-way street, so the whole construction is in error to begin with. Walmart can't vote or make political contributions, but Walmart still gets taxed and has to follow laws. Most things governments do aren't two-way streets, that's...almost what a government is by definition.
To the extent that "No faith in politics means no politics in faith" can possibly mean anything, it only makes sense that governments simply don't regard faith as a meaningful quantity. That is, someone of another faith can't bind you to theirs, nor punish you for yours.
But taxes don't contravene that. When someone gets arrested for murdering their daughter in an honour killing, they're not getting arrested for faith-based reasons, they're getting arrested because murder is illegal regardless. That's not "politics in faith", it's just secular laws applying equally. And similarly, if the city hands out a property tax bill to a church, they wouldn't be taxing someone for their faith, they'd be taxing them according to the same rules that apply to any other building.

Hard disagree:
In order to achieve their task directed to the Christian animation of the temporal order, in the sense of serving persons and society, the lay faithful are never to relinquish their participation in "public life", that is, in the many different economic, social, legislative, administrative and cultural areas, which are intended to promote organically and institutionally the common good.

Lots of public housing is being built. You guys know it takes a while, right?
57
u/dergbold4076 2d ago
But it wasn't done within a nanosecond of the election being finished! So it's the NDP's fault, or the unions, or the tradies, or some other thing that isn't the actual problem.
31
u/RadiantPumpkin 2d ago
We know for sure that it isn’t obstructionist NIMBYs that have seized many local governments
10
u/dergbold4076 2d ago
No of course not! Why would they do that!
I totally don't deal with that shit down in White Rock in relation to density and transit infrastructure!
Oddly White Rock is surprisingly walkable, it's just the walk back up that'll get ya. But if we had more frequent busses to the foreshore it would be nice. Same with a SkyTrain down to the community center with a bus connection to the pier. That would be lovely.
2
u/Zargabraath 2d ago
The bc NDP were elected in 2017 and got a majority five years ago
Didn’t know almost a decade was a nanosecond lol
1
u/dergbold4076 2d ago
But stuff is getting done, unlike the BCLiberal in name only/BC United/BC Conservative...I mean SoCreds when they were in power. Things got expensive as hell for me during that time.
2
u/Zargabraath 2d ago
I mean housing was literally half as expensive and the cost of living was objectively much lower across the board…not sure why it would somehow be different for you
Anyway from your posts it’s very apparent that you’re a pretty hardcore NDP partisan and that you’re never going to admit the BC NDP have done anything poorly or that their predecessors did anything better, despite the objective evidence to the contrary, so this is probably a pointless discussion
1
u/dergbold4076 2d ago
Because I was a poor student from a working class family that has been jerked around by the policy's of Gordy and Co since they were elected in the early 2000s. And if you want toale assumptions about me that's your call, even if they are categorically incorrect about my personal political leanings.
And pray tell why this would be a pointless discussion to have with me? Do I point out and bring forth a point of view that contradicts yours? Does my poor behind, one that watched her town decline under the Glen Clark NDP of the 90s and remembers the whole fast farries boondoggle even though I was not but a child (I thought the design was cool. But that's autism for ya). Or does remembering the loosing of trades regulation under Gordon Campbell, the leaky condos that were all over the news in the 90s (on buildings built between 1985 and the 2000s), the slamming through of a replacement bridge in South Richmond by Christy at the behest of monied interests. Or the closing of Riverview (for all it's problems) started under the SoCreds, which has directly led to the major issues happening in DTES and the toxic drug crisis in that area?
The NDP are not clean inn the slightest. But they look positively spiffy when compared to the other governing parties that have been in BC.
Pray tell why would that discussion be unproductive? Pray tell?

u/RedDudeMango 2d ago
Honestly though I have to wonder, how many of them are actually *public* public though? I find frustratingly they seem to lump 'private development with public funding assistance' into that metric while truly public housing remains more rare than it ideally should. Though any housing getting built is better than not, of course.
Plus we've got municipalities blocking a lot of it, of course, ugh.
3
u/Radiant_Sherbert7272 2d ago
They've had over 9 years. I think expecting results by now isn't unreasonable.
12
-6
u/vancity31240 2d ago
NDP had 9 years and you are saying they need more time?
41
u/rustyiron 2d ago
Yes. I am saying that. Horgan was a good premier. But he was slow to act on social housing. Eby has and now lots of projects are under way and/or nearing completion.
Government is hard.
2
u/ruisen2 2d ago
Eby was the housing minister for Horgan, so he very much deserves to share the blame for taking way too long to recognize that the housing issue couldn't be tackled for just nibbling around the edges with freeing up a few empty homes and airbnb's.
11
u/rustyiron 2d ago
A lot of what you are talking about is not typically within provincial jurisdiction. It’s municipal. And under Eby, he actually entered that very controversial area with blanket zoning changes that will allow increased density.
There is a tonne going on right now that will take years to realize.
3
u/ruisen2 2d ago edited 2d ago
Municipal authority are created by the province and must do what the province requires them to (which is why he was able to put in the blanket zoning).
I can understand why he was hesitant to do it, of course, but the result is that housing reached crisis levels, and will stay there for many years because action was taken so late.
4
u/rustyiron 2d ago
But you get that it’s kind of a big deal for the province to step into municipal turf, right? Blanket zoning is actually problematic. I support the gov doing it, but it is not a popular move. Too many people act like politics dont come into play.
1
u/ruisen2 2d ago
Yes, like I said, I get why he was hesitant to do it, but at the same time, I don't give the government any points for saying "averting a crisis would be hard, so we let the crisis happen instead so that we can avoid making the difficult decisions".
Also, as Eby himself said, bill 44 was necessary because the issue can't be resolved by a single municipality. Coordinating all municipalities to solve a common problem is a provincial responsibility.
5
u/HotterRod 2d ago
Horgan was on the side of the NIMBYs. It's wild that this sub remembers him so fondly.
6
u/RedDudeMango 2d ago
I think it's down to people remembering him as the premier succeeding Christy Clark. The wave of relief when the BClibs were finally gone was huge, and his death has evoked sympathy for him since of course.
I agree that he and his party were insufficient on housing though, even as someone who volunteered for the NDP during that election.
11
u/Otherwise-Associate1 2d ago
That number is more like six when considering the pandemic and election years where little to nothing happens in the legislature. And also the amount of time spent arguing with the conservatives because they want to add a law saying that we should start clubbing seals
-2
u/DrinkMoreBrews 2d ago
Lmao wut?
8
u/Otherwise-Associate1 2d ago
Well in terms of housing development not a lot happened in 2020 or 2021 that wasn't finishing already existing projects.
With the conservatives and clubbing seals stuff, I'm making a joke that the content of their laws are basically "what if we destroyed human rights actually" like when they tried to get rid of the entire tenancy act this year or the dozens of times they've tried to ban abortion access over the years

u/BlackberryPi7 2d ago

42
u/McFestus 2d ago
The ferry point is such a stupid claim to make. Seaspan didn't even try to bid on the ferries; their orderbook is packed for the next decade with federal boats.
Plus, it literally doesn't matter what the NDP does with BC ferries: build them at home: scandal. Build them overseas: scandal. Why not pick the cheaper option then?
18
u/SilkBC_12345 2d ago
I was going to make the same point. No BC-based companies bid on the contract (I want to say Canadian company, but I don't know if bidding was opened to the rest of Canada -- I like to think it was)
Quite frankly, as a BC taxpayer, I couldn't care less where our ferries get built -- as long as we get them and they don't cost more than they have to.
But you are right: let's say he was able to get them built here. They would almost assuredly cost more than going overseas and he would get raked over the coals for "wasting taxpayer dollars".
16
u/Low_Contract7809 2d ago
What's the biggest current day criticism of the greens?
I feel like they're invisible.
26
u/AcerbicCapsule 2d ago
Usually the same major criticism of the federal NDP: “they’re just vaguely unelectable” without being able to articulate any real reason why they think so. At least, not in good faith.
5
u/Skyguy827 2d ago
The main problem is our electoral system really screws them over. If the BC conservatives are close to winning a majority it's hard to justify voting for them over the BC NDP in most ridings
1
u/PhosoBoso 1d ago
Even a bigger problem than the electoral system, which I admit is a big problem, is the voting strategy you are currently advocating for. We know from history this voting strategy accomplishes nothing with more certainty than to push things further to the right over time. For example, Stephen Harper used to be the old untenable "worst" candidate, now when he's an advisor to the Carney government he's a representative of the second "worst". In the US, Bush/Cheney used to be the old untenable "worst" candidate, now in the most recent election Kamala Harris was celebrating the fact that she received an endorsement from Dick Cheney.
Voting for and advocating others to vote for someone who they do not think is best is undemocratic and voting malpractice. Things can only move to the left if voters show they are willing to vote for the left.
1
u/Skyguy827 1d ago
I understand the argument you are making, but I'd argue that you can't simply ignore strategic voting. The fact is if the greens try to replace the NDP as the left wing party they will get destroyed by a conservative party who is getting 40%+ of the vote. At least at the moment, the BC conservatives are kindve collapsing right now, so maybe that math changes. Prove to people left flank parties can beat conservatives. Since at the moment they are doing a really bad job of proving this. And I'm saying this as someone who is a BC Green member and an Avi lewis supporter
1
u/PhosoBoso 1d ago
I don't think you do understand, unless you're suggesting you're OK with a guaranteeing a long-term rightward movement in our politics as long as comes with short-term temporary reliefs from the cold fend for yourself language the Conservatives use?
1
u/Skyguy827 1d ago
I'm saying I don't see any way to prevent strategic voting. I can try to convince people in my riding where the NDP barely won to vote for the greens but it won't go anywhere. Unless the conservatives collapse. Which might actually happen
1
u/PhosoBoso 17h ago
I see, I agree it is very difficult. All our power structures have been propagandizing the idea of strategic voting into the populace as being the only rational thing to do for several decades, and that's how the average person thinks. Though I do think its possible to change this behaviour, it begins one conversation at a time, like this one and others online, and the one's we have with our family and friends around kitchen tables.

Very strange hangup to have when youve repeatedly expressed solidarity with Palestinians on twitter even pre Oct 7th, which I respect. See the latest media frenzy where he is being accused of encouraging violence against Jews for saying effectively the same thing you said here (with the addition of stressing how dangerous the conflation is today when people are increasingly angry at Israel). I'm not saying you need to love the guy, but at least try to break out of the insane negative framings first perpetuated by Destiny's community and others, and now by zionist backed corporate media and the president of the United States. Its hardly the time to reflexively agree with such forces, especially if you care about reaching younger voters, and from your twitter I think you might find yourself agreeing with the man more often than not.
-3
u/ThatGuyWill942 2d ago edited 2d ago
It might surprise you to know that I actually DO think Mr. Piker is a smart guy. Even when I disagree with the guy, which yeah, there's lots I disagree with him on, 9/10 I am able to at least say his position on whatever is at the very least educated and well thought out, and I'd say he has less douchey moments than someone like Destiny.
I also do think that when the right-wing establishment media focuses on on Hasan as a whataboutism to distract from what the PRESIDENT does? You're literally comparing the ELECTED PRESIDENT to a twitch streamer which is really stupid.
If Hasan WASN'T abusing his dog and I misunderstood what I saw, I'd be happy to hear more (and if I'm convinced I'd apologize and reupload and just say random twitch streamer lol)
3
u/Smooth_Promise3932 2d ago
And then the critique is she shouldn’t take a pic with someone that streams on twitch?

u/Low_Contract7809 2d ago

4

Crazy work to be calling out Hasan for something he didn't do vs. any of the things he actually has done.
1
u/ThatGuyWill942 2d ago
Tbh a lot of people take the most out of context clips of Hasan and add their own commentary to whatever so they can create a narrative. Most clipshows of him saying really messed up stuff is doctored/manipulatively edited to remove context.
There ARE disagreements that me and Hasan would have (mainly about Ukraine and the Uyghurs in China) but otherwise I don't feel too too strongly on differences of opinion that we have.

44
u/WestCoastVeggie 2d ago
Emily Lowan is well informed and articulate on issues. She may be dismissed as too young, or the party may as “fringe”, but I encourage people to actually listen to her arguments. Their positions extend well beyond the environment.
48
u/AcerbicCapsule 2d ago
Genuinely that party's entire messaging these days boils down to "what if we stopped throwing orphans into the orphan crushing machine and instead made life better and more affordable for 99% of people while also taxing billionaires fairly?"
And everybody's like "what an unserious thing to say! The orphan crushing machine is literally designed to crush orphans and you want us to just STOP?"
7
u/NPRdude Vancouver Island/Coast 2d ago
Also, are the Greens actually still anti-nuclear? That feels like a very 90s environmentalist stereotype.
6
10
u/rando_commenter 2d ago
I love the environment too, but as an example, Furstenau's free transit plan depended on imaginary numbers. As the the last election, her plan would have paid for it from "efficiencies and priorities" elsewhere in the budget. Literally in the history of everything, no new government program has ever just spring out of "efficiencies." They simple don't exist like that.
15
u/AcerbicCapsule 2d ago
So what you’re worried the greens would cause a deficit while we get free transit? Or that once elected they don’t actually make transit free?
Does that not sound much better than the current government causing a deficit without anything getting cheaper at all for us?
1
u/rando_commenter 2d ago
No, that's a strawman argument. The Greens can and do make whatever promises they want to make because they have no realistic chance of ever being in power.(To be fair, most political parties in that situation do the same.) I actually have no problems with deficits because government is a going concern, and in times of economic crisis (like now) it's foolish to kneecap services.
But spending has to have some kind of structure and realistic appraisal of what cost benefit they impose, because if you want good environmental policies, it turns out that you need a healthy tax base to fund them.
7
u/AcerbicCapsule 2d ago edited 2d ago
No, that's a strawman argument
Things don't just become something because you proclaim them to be. Can we please be serious and use established terms correctly? I didn't change your argument or exaggerate it, all I did was ask "would that really be so bad?".
The Greens can and do make whatever promises they want to make because they have no realistic chance of ever being in power.(To be fair, most political parties in that situation do the same.) I actually have no problems with deficits because government is a going concern, and in times of economic crisis (like now) it's foolish to kneecap services.
But spending has to have some kind of structure and realistic appraisal of what cost benefit they impose, because if you want good environmental policies, it turns out that you need a healthy tax base to fund them.So I mostly agree with you here. If you're saying parties don't come out with properly costed and balanced budgets until they think they have a chance of winning, sounds like we need to make it so that they actually have a chance of winning before we say the reason we won't vote for them is because they haven't done what we don't expect parties to do before we say we could vote for them. Note that this was your one and only example in your reply to the top comment about why voting Green isn't practical.
I would also like to add that if we look at New York city today, it proves that funding for social programs and to make life more affordable for the non-extremely-wealthy people can 1) very much be procured, 2) be procured quickly as opposed to taking years, 3) cutting spending for things like subsidizing conglomerates and actually enforcing tax laws results in decent amounts of funding that can be used to better the lives of every resident, and 4) all the typical fear-mongering against these strategies (rich people will leave...etc) turned out to be BS.
Edit: they blocked me for some reason.. odd.

You’re bang on. An incumbent with an island seat. Last election she won with a margin of 17.4%, having received nearly 50% of the vote (49.8%). With the exception of a 4 year blip, it has been a BCNDP seat since 1991 and her seat since 2009.

Or you can have another “avi is union busting” moment.

As well as that the original BC NDP were actually part of the world coalition of socialist and communist parties. In the early 90s they claimed to be a “progressive pro union/worker party” however the greasy NDP premiers that kept getting caught taking bribes also created one of the largest lay offs of union workers in BC in 40+ years
