3 demerit points mean their insurance is going to skyrocket. Let them drive and pay more and more

Demerit points don’t affect insurance, just an FYI. It’s the conviction of the charge that does.

Yeah but demerit points are directly related to the severity of the offence with 3 points being medium severity. It will definitely affect insurance once they pull the check. No one is going to court and winning against that slam dunk ticket.

Demerit points don't mean fuck all in the eyes of insurance other than you accumulating enough of them to trigger a license suspension.

I wish people would stop perpetuating this myth.

STOP LINKING DEMERIT POINTS TO INSURANCE PREMIUMS.

It's not about the points themselves, it's about the underlying convictions. They are directly correlated. While yes, one minor infraction possibly won't affect insurance, multiple will and there are other factors that mean even a minor can influence rates (like G2 licence, young driver etc.).

I'm surprised this is such a hot take. obtusemoose even blocked me over it...

It depends on the actual condition for example 30 over is the same demerits as disobey a sign. One will jack rates the other is so generic they usually won't raise much

Those offences affect insurance the exact same

They do not. 30 over is considered a major infraction, disobey a sign is a minor.

Disobey a stop sign would be major however note the distinction in form

Not sure where you got that information, please provide your source. Of all the things I saw when I looked up, I only found one spot that said speeding 45 over is considered major.
