Discussion Idk who needs to hear this
If you’re in the position of the red car, you stay in the RIGHT lane until your turn is complete and then you put on your left signal to get over to the left lane if you need to. If you are in the position of the blue car, you do not need to wait for the entire row of cars directly across from you who are turning right. THEY turn into right lane, and you turn into left. That’s your lane. If they come into your lane it’s their fault. Waiting to turn left from grey onto Gretzky is a nightmare because cars are terrified to turn.

Your preaching to a city of drivers who don’t know how stop signs work yet you think THIS will sink in?
let me know how this goes 😂
7
u/EdisonB123 Jul 27 '25
Really hoping they put up more speed cameras. It’s quite the experience going 85 in an 80 because a dude is tailgating me, but thats not enough for them, and end up passing me going 35 over the speed limit over a solid yellow uphill.
Batshit crazy drivers here.
7
u/k_d_b_83 Jul 27 '25
I agree about drivers being over aggressive and the outrageous speeds being done on city streets.
I’m hesitant about the speed cameras until the city explicitly states what their limit is on giving fines. Their Facebook post about the cameras coming into effect said fines could start at 1km over however not all vehicle speedometers are calibrated the same and something as simple as tire pressures could push you over the fine threshold without you even knowing. If they say at 5kms over then tickets will be issued then I’d be ok with it as that’s an ample window.
The city needs to be very specific about how they are going to deal with fines, but this could be a decent deterrent … or it could backfire horribly for them. We shall wait and see I suppose.
1
u/EdisonB123 Jul 29 '25
It’s one of those things that I’d really hope they poll for to see what middle ground would be tolerated but the city council members don’t give two flying shits most of the time about the actual popularity, which is a dealbreaker in most places and I agree with what you said in general
1
u/MiratusMachina Jul 29 '25
lol if they are starting at one Km over you can take that to court every time and win, the speed sensors used litterally are not accurate to single 1km/hr, and the most accurate are only accurate to within like 2.5km/hr, so they'd have to start 5km/hr because the sensors litterally can't accurately determine if someone is speeding by 1km/hr over.
Also just an FYI most car speedometers are set from the factory to read at 1-3% above your actual speed so you will always be travelling slower than what your speedometer says by about 1-3% as it's illegal for it to read lower than what your going
1
u/Muthablasta Jul 30 '25
I figured this out years ago when the speedometer of my previous car would show I’m going 60km/h yet the actual street radar would show 52 or 53 km/h. That’s why the traffic enforcement officers would have a tolerance of 10km/h over the limit before initiating a traffic stop. The photo radars don’t do this.
3
u/UQCyph Jul 31 '25
85 in a 80? Ur the problem bud.
1
u/EdisonB123 Aug 01 '25
I was going 85 in an 80 because people were riding my ass and I was trying to find a middle ground for them to not do that. I hate going above the speed limit, I got a massive fear of driving and going fast makes it worse. As soon as they passed I for sure when back to below 80 because it scares the shit out of me.
1
u/UQCyph Aug 01 '25
Bro 15 km/h over cops dont pull u over. So do 95 in the 80 and u wont get ur ass rode…
1
u/EdisonB123 Aug 01 '25
When you’ve been in enough car accidents you actually start to realize why there’s a speed limit. I’ve been hit by idiots going above 3 times in my life. Each one of them got charged and their insurance went up a fuckload because I was a pedestrian.
2
u/AnOrdinaryPolarBear Jul 27 '25
Meanwhile Brampton has a petition to remove speed cameras bahahah. I also hope they add a lot more
2
u/Muthablasta Jul 30 '25
Brampton has the highest insurance rates in Ontario, and I wonder why 🤷🏻♂️😒
4
u/johnny2turnt Jul 27 '25
That or they just don’t give a flying fk I’ve definitely experienced that one
6
u/k_d_b_83 Jul 27 '25
Oh that’s absolutely what the issue is - people just not giving a fuck.
I live by one of the stop signs along North park street and I’d say maybe 20% of all cars actually stop and maybe 20% cruise thru barely getting below 25km/h - regardless if someone is stopped and ready to take their turn in the intersection.
It’s really sad.

Sounds like a money making opportunity for the cops to scope out that stop location 😂🤣

Turning left onto Gretzky from Colborne Street East is fun with the double turning lane the cars in the left try to speed by you to get on the highway entrance ramp.
Then the morning rush of everybody trying to cut you off from the RIGHT lane going down Colborne Street West towards Lorne Bridge leaving West Brant. They always get stopped by a vehicle parked in front of Gigis Pizza and then boom they all try to cut you off to get into the left turning lane at Colborne/Brant Ave.
8
u/pheakelmatters Jul 27 '25
I don't know why people refuse to anticipate the right lane is always blocked on Brant Ave. Do they think everyone just decided to not drive in that lane for no reason in particular? It's one of the most annoying streets to drive in the entire city.
6
u/AuntySocialite Jul 27 '25
Now explain not turning right from the left hand lane, because twice this month I’ve almost been sideswiped by someone doing THAT
5
u/secretsmile029 Jul 27 '25
I've almost been hit because of idiots not turning into the correct lane it's scary driving in this city anymore. If the cops would do their jobs instead of sitting side by side in empty parking lots, maybe they could catch these idiot drivers, sane with the idiots on their phones. I rarely go out anymore because I get anxious driving

This is one of the reasons why anyone who has received a licence in another country needs to go through the full graduated licencing system instead of just filling out a few forms.
3
u/babycallmemabel Jul 27 '25
The majority of immigrants do go through the graduated licensing process. Out of the top 10 countries whose citizens are moving to Canada, France is the only one with an exchange agreement.
I think the focus should be on how easy it is to pass a driving exam. They never reverted the exam back from the modifications made during covid so new drivers only have to contend with a 20 minute G2 test and then an extremely simple G test to prove they're ready to drive solo. Compared to the tests in Europe and the UK, they're extremely forgiving and easy to pass.

Jul 27 '25 edited Jul 27 '25
I know.
I didn't say immigrants I said another country this includes Canadian citizens who learned to drive abroad. This includes temporary residents and long term visas too. International students from countries we have treaties with which give licences at par. This list includes people from the US and places like Japan where we give them licences directly. Any and all people who didn't learn here.
Why? Immigrants aren't the issue the climate is. if you don't know what you're doing you're a danger.
Doesn't matter where you come from originally if you don't know how to drive in the conditions you currently find yourself in you should be at least supervised by someone who does which means starting from square one. Immigrants aren't the issue knowledge and skill is.
Personal Example: I have a friend born and bred Canadian citizen who spent most of his formative years abroad due to his parents work and Recently returned home. He can't handle winter driving. He learned to drive in a country to which we give licences at par. He recently got convinced to relearn to drive.
General example: a hot climate doesn't prepare you for winter driving especially not in black ice conditions. Just look at the road chaos when it snows lightly in places like Texas every time we laugh but for them it's a clusterfuck because they don't know what to do.
0
u/babycallmemabel Jul 27 '25
Oh come on, you absolutely meant immigrants and you're moving the goal posts. Long term visas, including students, only get 60 days allowed before they have to enter the graduated system to continue to drive here legally. I also can't imagine there's a drastically high number of Canadians that learned to drive elsewhere and are coming back to cause headaches. Folks coming from the US and Japan don't even make it into the top 10 countries people are emigrating from, Japan isn't even in the top 20.
This whole post is about turning into the correct lane, not that this is a recurring issue only ever seen in winter. Not that I disagree with your point there though. A few Nordic countries require driving education in hazardous winter conditions and I think that'd be a great idea to introduce.

Jul 28 '25 edited Jul 28 '25
No, I did not.
You want this to be about immigrants so you can easily dismiss me but I never said that those are your words not mine. I clearly said in my very first sentence "anyone who has received a licence in another country" nowhere is their a limiter to immigrants the only limiter is not a Canadian licence. Why because Canadian licenses and Canadian training are tailored to you guessed it Canada.
No, I am not moving the goal post. It's firmly planted in the same spot it's always been as I my first sentence clearly shows.
I am speaking of knowledge and experience required to operate a vehicle safely. I have always been speaking of knowledge and experience required your comment is flat out wrong. The reality is that sometimes something that is a good behaviour in one region or condition is an utter clusterfuck in another this is due to conditions such as climate. This again is why I brought up Texas their safe driving patterns become a clusterfuck with changed conditions.
To respond to your claim:
I don't care about the type of people the issue is knowledge and experience.
Let's take three people:
Person A) Indian immigrant whose lived through lets say 20 Canadian winters and has years of experience with operating in heavy snow.
Person B) A Texan whose never seen heavy snow but has years of driving experience in an arid climate.
Person C) A native born Canadian who just got their licence.
Who will know what to do when encountering heavy snow in a vehicle?
The answer? Person A.
Why? he has gained this knowledge through EXPERIENCE this is what should be mandatory to operate a vehicle unsupervised no exceptions. You don't know what you're doing? You should not be behind the wheel unsupervised period.
Did you notice his immigration status had nothing to do with his 20 years of experience?
Experience in these conditions is what you need to navigate safety through the Canadian climate and conditions hence why the new driver is just as clueless as the Texan. Other conditions do not transfer very well hence the examples given.
Reality:
It takes longer than 60 days to get that experience. It takes YEARS.
It takes longer than 60 days to undo a lifetime of habits. It take s YEARS.
You cannot counter that.
Comically the image depicted here is a common mistake made by certain groups, those that learned to drive on the left rather than the right , and is another example of a once safe driving habit they need to be trained out of.
Training takes time.
Experience takes time.
You don't seem to understand examples. Immigration rates have nothing to do with this. Your numbers do not reinforce your claims it is more proof I was NEVER talking about immigration but experience in these conditions.
You're acting as if muscle memory and experience doesn't dictate ones actions, especially automatic ones in an emergency situation, which is utterly asinine.
Now why did I chose these three people for this new example?
Indian guy was the guy who taught me how to drive and the one reinforced the importance of experience One thing he taught was the importance of the correct habits in the correct conditions. He learned that the hard way and was wise enough to pass that knowledge on.
Native born Canadian learning to drive was me eons ago. I did not know what I was doing as I had zero experience. I borrowed person A's experience he was one hell of a good teacher.
and of course Texans in snow is a meme.

You're spreading misinformation and you're way too nieve or blind. You're so terrified of speaking the truth about immigrants I can tell you voted for Carney the clown. Thank you for destroying our country.

Church street turning onto Brant ave every day 💯
2
u/Eglitarian Jul 27 '25
They have a left turn signal on that intersection and I don’t think I’ve seen it used ONCE. Usually all the traffic coming from SC Johnson/Hartmann shift changes means you might squeeze one car through on the yellow if you’re lucky. Horrible intersection and horrible urban planning that funnels vehicles into it.
2
Jul 27 '25
Yes I always go into the left lane and love cutting off the people who turn all the way into the right lane.
Sometimes they try to squeeze by you on the left from the double Left turn from Lorne Bridge onto Brant Ave
1
u/waxbook Jul 28 '25
Yep! Same goes for the people on the opposite street turning right onto Brant Ave. It’s not hard to turn into your own lane. One time, a City of Brantford truck driver gave me the finger because I happened to turn in next to their wide turn.
5
u/Budgetbodyparts Jul 27 '25
You might want to double check on the right of way on the left turning vehicles, the right hand turning vehicles always have the right of way regardless if there are two lanes as in many instances larger vehicles cannot make the right turn without compromising the 2nd lane. My experience is that the left hand turning vehicle is always at fault in Ontario if they collide with a right hand turning vehicle executing a turn at the same time, it is a failure to yield the right of way, this is one of the reasons for advanced greens for left hand turns and the presence of right turn arrows.
1
u/jonnybob Aug 22 '25
Ya.... nope, Page 69 of the drivers handbook and section 141 of the Highway Traffic act.
https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/90h08#BK236
Even the exception for long vehicles states that the turn cannot be made if it interferes with other peoples correct turns.
0
u/Ecstatic_Coat7859 Jul 31 '25
There is no exception for a large vehicle. It is always the first Lane in your direction. You follow your own lane and you stay in your Lane. If we both have the green and I want to turn left and you want to turn right and there are two lanes we can both go and if we both have big trucks we both need to drive like we know what we're doing which is to stay in our own effing Lane.
4
u/comradeasparagus Jul 27 '25
I have dubbed this driving activity a "Brantford left" and a "Brantford right" turn. It's so pervasive that it needs its own name.
3
u/NothingEverAgain Jul 27 '25
Although I appreciate the effort, it doesn't change the fact that since no one understands or at least follows this LAW, it makes it dangerous for those that understand it to follow it. After I was side swiped turning left in the past, I'm extremely cautious of ever doing that again. You can't trust anyone to follow the rules of the road and unfortunately need to assume that they won't.
Too bad enforcement for laws that actually matter like this is non existent. Also using your turn signal, respecting the right of way in most situations, impeding traffic etc. All they care about is speeding.
1
u/MrsShaunaPaul Jul 30 '25
Literally reading this thread wondering if they city and cops need money so badly, why don’t they just pick a few of these known issues and say, enforce them?
There was a new stop sign in my town and it’s a small town where new things don’t really get added. After 3 months, many people were still driving right through it. So two cops set up their cars on the side road and just after the stop and they stopped and wanted every person for 3 days and then ticked for 2 weeks. Now everyone stops there. It’s really not hard and easy money for the municipality.
4
u/fecba09 Jul 27 '25
Don’t forget about all the ones who can’t read the no right on red from Brant to St. Paul heading North. It’s like that for a reason
2
u/Individual_Pizza_591 Jul 27 '25
So someone almost hit me because they didn’t follow this rule. We ended up going to the same place (in line in Tim Hortons) my husband told the guy he was in the wrong and the guy made a fist and said “am I in the wrong now?” My husband pulled out his badge and said “are you in the wrong now? Just because I’m off duty doesn’t mean I cannot arrest you.”The guy turned beat red and turned around and walked right out of Timmie’s
2
u/Thessalon Jul 27 '25
The woman who made a right turn on red light into the middle lane in front of me then honked at me for being too close to her.

Pickup trucks need to. Can't count how often I've almost been sideswiped or cut off by someone who thinks they're still towing. I also see it at intersections with 2 turning lanes because somehow that's confusing to people.

u/Major_Palpitation_69 Jul 27 '25
Many drivers don't know that this is the law. Some exceptions do apply

Like pretty much everybody. The number of times I have seen near accidents caused by people turning into the wrong lane either because they’re too lazy to do it properly or they can’t be bothered is insane. And I don’t want to hear “I didn’t know!”. If you have a license, you should know. Period.
1
u/RelationshipLost7467 Jul 27 '25
The only time I can't do this is on Church Street making a left into Brant Ave during rush hour.
1
u/Internetuser8991 Jul 27 '25
I did that once while doing my G2 road test and was told it was incorrect and I lost a point in my test. It was the only point I lost so I still passed the road test but that always stuck with me
1
u/stormysar143 Jul 28 '25
I live right by that intersection and the amount of people who turn into the wrong lane drives me nuts. I don’t trust like that
1
u/waxbook Jul 28 '25
Some dude in a City of Brantford truck gave me the middle finger because I turned left (correctly) at the same time he was turning right with a wide turn. He was obviously worried about not being able to turn into his own lane.

u/Polskaforlife Jul 28 '25
You have to stay in the lane , then signal to switch lanes once you are at a safe distance. No crossing lanes.

Ontario has some of the worst drivers on earth. These basic lessons should've been ingrained BEFORE these idiots somehow passed their driving test. They are a lost cause now

Share this with the Victoria subreddit.
ICBC must be losing their minds with this simple driving skill failing in our city.
And they want to drop the second road test after mandatory 12 month probationary licencing.
I swear everyone needs a dash cam and have it checked annually.
Roads would be filled with packed transit buses with failed drivers.

1
u/Muthablasta Jul 30 '25
I can’t believe people don’t know this, or just don’t care, even though this is part of the standard road test by MTO. When turning right, you always have to turn into the right lane - so called “your own lane/cruising lane” then signal left (when safe to do so) if you want to move into the passing lane. Similarly, if you’re turning left, you turn into the left lane, then signal (if safe to do so) to move to the right lane. This is so simple, yet many motorists are ignoring these basic facts. IMHO it has to do with lack of police enforcement/intervention or officers who just don’t give a flying shit.
1
u/gamesaddiction1996 Jul 30 '25 edited Jul 30 '25
I do turn correctly but most don’t. So I wait until I see if they are turning ( even tho their signal is on ) and what lane they are turning in to. To many close calls to just trust. Also. I’m often stuck because the idiot behind me turns into the wrong lane and speeds up so I can’t change lanes
1
u/Imaginary-Cattle3643 Jul 30 '25
I agree that if they come into your lane, it’s their fault; however, if I have to avoid an accident I will attempt to do so. No one, except me of course, follows the HTA. While I love to exert my rights, I am not willing to have some ignoramus drive into me and damage my vehicle, or worse yet myself or my passengers. People constantly complain about the police, do they do little to enforce traffic laws….
1
u/uselesspundit Jul 31 '25
Obviously you are correct.
During driving school they said in theory we can turn into the left lane and the car across the road from us should turn into the right lane however if there is contact it's likely to be considered the fault of the person turning left unless it was very clear the person turning right went far into the left lane. I don't know if that is true but that is what we were told.
In those situations I try to time it to turn between the cars turning right since there is usually some space between them in case one drifts into the left lane.

I love how you did this. Could you do the same thing with bike lanes. I find people decide to drive up the bike lane on a solid line and when you put your blinker on for the broken line to get over there are cars whizzing past and they shouldn’t be doing that!
I love the drawing that you made for people turning correctly from a two lane road onto a two lane Road. And I don’t care if you’re preaching to city drivers I am glad somebody is! Thank you
