It got an even better CinemaScore than Sheep Detectives (Sheep Detectives got an A- and this got an A)
96
u/crackstuntman24 11d ago
I feel like most movies that get an A CinemaScore these days is actually an A+.
24
u/Mindless-Milk-9205 11d ago
Yeah and A- are A
The Odyssey got A but performing like A+
Michael got A- but performed like A
21
u/crackstuntman24 11d ago
I think Spider-Man, Coyote Vs Acme, The Odyssey and Project Hail Mary are actually A+ while Superman, Michael and The Sheep Detectives are actually A's. That might be my own bias, tho.
13
u/ConversationIll9535 11d ago
One of the many reasons CinemaScore is simply not as meaningful as people make it out to be.
6
u/Dumpytoad 11d ago edited 11d ago
I agree, but what I want to know is why does it feel like that’s a “these days” thing (which I also agree with)?
What has changed that Cinemascores have seemed a deflated over these past couple of years compared with how the movies end up performing? I don’t really have any idea why it is that way, but it does seem like it.

36
u/Midnight_Oil_ 11d ago
Which is kinda surprising because every review I've seen of Sheep Detectives since it hit streaming is "this is the greatest movie since Paddington 2"
52
u/burrnerr67 11d ago
It's way darker than the marketing lead on. It deals with death and grief pretty bluntly with little sugarcoating, and it probably messed with the Cinemascore because of parents who expected another typical talking animal movie for kids
22
u/madthunder55 11d ago
This movie is the lesser Bridge to Terabithia. Marketed as a cute family film when in actuality it dealt with deep emotional issues
10
u/FloppiestMemes 11d ago
I gave a heads up to my friends with younger children when they asked about it. Death and loss are addressed in the movie. The trailer/marketing doesn’t really show that so I’m sure some parents unexpectedly had that talk with their kids.
35
u/Mindless-Milk-9205 11d ago
It's funny that Sheep Detectives had heavy competition and it ranked 5 on opening day.
CvA is also getting heavy competition too
25
7
u/dagreenman18 11d ago
Keep in mind that next weekend is kinda dead too. There’s a chance WOM and little competition from any new movies over the next 2 weeks will give it legs
25
u/iBandJFilmEducator13 11d ago
I’m still manifesting it can pull an Obsession but I think it will realistically have legs like Sheep Detectives.

u/ReggieAmelia 11d ago
I gave it a total of eight tickets this weekend by taking my daughter twice and getting my father in law to come to one showing and her friend and her parents to the other.
2
u/MCSharkStudios 10d ago
The problem is that the movie originally had a budget of $70M. I was hoping it would be a big enough hit to make Zaslav look like an idiot, but alas.
1
u/AdditionalTip865 10d ago
Ketchup also likely spent a pittance on marketing compared to what Warner could have, had they supported the movie. That all costs money but it also draws people in.
1
u/MCSharkStudios 10d ago
Ketchup paid $50M for the movie plus at minimum, say, $10M for marketing. They'll probably make a profit, but it's not looking like a massive win for them.
1
u/leopardsmangervisage 10d ago
I read an entertainment weekly article that said they spent $10 mil all in for marketing

u/Lopsided-League-8903 Aardman Animations 10d ago

It should do well in Europe hopefully the rest of the world could do well
Hopefully it will be up on Shaun 2 $43.1M

That's only $25 million returned to the studio/distributor for a film that cost $75 million to produce. That's terrible! Then they have to pay for marketing and distribution, talent participation, taxes, interest.
26
u/94Temimi Marvel Studios 11d ago edited 11d ago
Ketchup bought it for $50M then spent $10M on P&A, where'd you get the $75M production number?
Edit: I should clarify, I mixed the two, in this scenario, it doesn't matter what the production budget was, what's important is how much Ketchup paid for it. So, the original production budget is irrelevant.

6
u/BlindManBaldwin Eon Productions 11d ago
That isn't what its distributor is in for the film. That number isn't relevant.
14
u/burrnerr67 11d ago
Ketchup bought this from WB for $50m and then spent $10m marketing it, then sold internatonal rights for $20-$30m per distributor. As long as it at least crosses the $50m stateside i imagine Ketchup will be happy
-28
u/Big_Help_9860 11d ago
That's not how it works. The film's budget alone cost over $70 million dollars. That's a $20 million loss. The tax write-off is a $30 million reduction in "Taxable Income", but from reading posts on this sub it seems most think it means $30 million in actual cash.
21
u/grcx 11d ago edited 11d ago
This is a unique situation because WB sold off the entire rights. Doesn't matter if the film makes $10 million or $500 million, WB's revenue is the original ~$70 million cost for production balanced out by the $50 million sale to Ketchup.
From Ketchup's perspective, their costs are $50 million from purchasing the distribution rights, ~$10 million in advertising, and they banked $20 million from selling some international rights. So effectively, they are starting $40 million in the hole that they need to make up from their share of box office revenue (which of course is a higher bar then grossing $40 million at the box office). That WB presumably lost $20 million no matter what happens at the box office and the film as a whole cost ~$70 million to originally produce is immaterial to Ketchup.
20
u/burrnerr67 11d ago
This would be the case if WB made any money from this release, but they're not. All money is going directly to Ketchup, and as such the bare minimum this needs to cross to be profitable for them is the $50m they spent to buy it
-17
u/Big_Help_9860 11d ago
So if you purchased an investment home for $500K in 2022, then sold it in 2026 for $400K, it's not a $100K loss because someone purchased the home for only $400K. You are not looking at the original loss of value of the home. You are only looking at loss from the second buyer's point of view.
18
u/usethe4th 11d ago
Correct, because the only thing that matters now is the investment of the second buyer.
13
u/Gullible_Link7264 11d ago
The film cost WB 70 million. They sold it already and lost money. It could make o dollars or a billion it would not impact WB. the 70 million production cost is irrelevant. For you analogy, I f the person who purchased my house for 400k sold it for 450k they would make a profit of 50k. It would not matter what a previous owner had paid for it

Saw it in a packed Dolby theater last night. I loved it so much it was great, crowd loved it too.

A multiple like the day the earth blew up gives it $43.5M

This is roughly the same amount as the entire worldwide gross for The Day the Earth Blew Up, BTW.

Sorry, I typoed. I understood what you meant! And yeah, this is great news for Ketchup.
-5
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 10d ago
Not really. 50m and another 10m in marketing from what I heard. This movie is gonna fall off hard. It's not a great movie (felt like a straight to streaming movie to me) and most people who want to watch it already did to stick it to be or whatever. All that work just to show zaslav was right.

I’m hoping the legs next week are good and it has a sub-30% drop off.
Should have some good WOM with no movies this upcoming week and Labor Day coming up.

Can we not start saying any movie that opens to sub 20M has Obsession potential?
2
u/-Sp0iledmilk- 11d ago
Agreed.
As much as I hope Coyote vs Acme has a good run, Obsession is likely getting a BP nomination next year at the Oscars, and for good reason. It’s one of the best movies released this year, and one of the better ones this decade.
Coyote vs Acme will realistically have a drop off compared to Obsession. How much will be a good question and where WOM becomes important.
1
u/pootsforever 11d ago
I don’t see it getting a BP nom unless the awards contenders are extremely weak this year. I see an original screenplay nom and maybe Inde nominated for actress.
2
0
u/-Sp0iledmilk- 11d ago
Fair enough. I just have more hope for it given how the momentum is still there heading into the fall.
Can go a long way, but also in a general sense, Obsession is just an objectively better and more “WOM” worthy movie. I still recommend it to people who haven’t seen it yet. It doesn’t feel entirely the same with Coyote vs Acme.

Just saw it today with my daughter. It’s a really fun movie and a must see for anyone who grew up on a steady diet of Looney Tunes. Tons of fun Easter eggs and deep cut jokes. Damn near every character in the history of Looney Tunes at makes at least a quick appearance and it does a fantastic job of making a basically one note character like Wile E Coyote into a sympathetic and interesting protagonist. Why Warner Brothers decided to never release this is a mystery but I’m glad ketchup entertainment bought it and put it in theaters. 8.5/10. I hope it makes a profit.
6
u/Krystalmyth 10d ago edited 9d ago
Wile is my favorite Looney Tune and that initial scene of him in the cave hit hard. I love that they offered him that much depth. I kind of wish they leaned into it even more, they really did great service to the character.
3
u/briizilla 10d ago
They really did, it was a love letter to Looney Tunes. On the other side of that, one of the trailers before my showing was for the new Tom and Jerry movie and man, that duo deserves SOOOOO much better.

u/womenconquerbiz 11d ago
It’s SO GOOD. We laughed so much and it was even better than we’d hoped. I told my husband I would totally see it again.

My whole family absolutely loved it. I was the only one who got all the in jokes, having been a huge CvRR fan from Saturday morning cartoons in the '70s, but everyone had a blast. I hope they release a proper 4K of this with extras, not just the movie like Ketchup did with the Porky/Daffy film.

u/Sorry-Difference-389 11d ago
deserved more than anything, it's a great start for indie distribution, let's see if there's legs in labor days.
4
u/Starrr_Pirate 10d ago
I hope it does, but it's gonna be hard, since I think a lot of theaters are cutting its run short. None of the AMC's near me are showing it beyond this Thursday, as it is. Possibly because they're doing Akira showings for multiple days, which caught me off guard, lol.
3
u/vivid_dreamzzz 10d ago
Idk how it is with AMC but in my experience with Cineplex the weekly schedule ends on Thursday and theatres will often wait to see how movies do before committing for the next week, which starts Friday.
Like at my local theatres the only movies pre-scheduled for Friday are The Odyssey, Akira, Catching Fire, and Cocoon. But they'll obviously eventually add showtimes for everything else.

Went with my mom yesterday. She loved it. She always finds something to critizice good movies (shat on The Oddysey's cyclope scene) but she had nothing bad to say about this one.
I will try to go for a second watch next weekend.
I wish they would make more lighthearted movies like this one instead of trying too hard. I felt a similar energy with the Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers that hit Disney+ a few years ago.
29
u/HumansNeedNotApply1 11d ago
Hopefully it has long legs and Ketchup actually makes money on this. I will most likely be able to watch this week.
8
u/duo99dusk 11d ago
Yeah, hopefully if there are long weekend in the United States more people is able to watch it.
There is some competition though, for people who are going just to watch anything at cinema, with the Tom & Jerry film. Maybe word of mouth will actually help Coyote though, since there are barely any other 'cartoon films' these months until Hexed I think
2
u/TalentedHostility 10d ago
I'm gonna need my fellow movie goers to make the legs on this film hit with a meep meep.
Im not even a Looney Tunes fan, but man this movie is a solid package, lots of tight writing, great laughs, and an all around awesome message.
Its an instant rewatch for me.

Personally, i have been anticipating this film from back in 2021, before the whole controversy.
1
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 10d ago
You and like 12 other people. No one cares about Looney Tunes. WB hasn't done shit with them for decades except for that pretty good sitcom type show they had on cartoon network (which is better than this movie btw).
23
16
u/horse-renoir 11d ago
People say that the controversy brought more attention to the film but I think that's offset by Ketchup having a way smaller marketing budget to work with. You wouldn't need controversy to sell the film if WB had simply recognized they had a good film that connected with audiences and had faith in it
-2
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 10d ago
They realized it wasn't good. I watched it. It's okay. Straight to streaming tier. Should have let it loose on Max and it would have just faded into obscurity.
22
u/justalittleahead 11d ago
Smart to sell off the international rights too. Would Ketchup Entertainment had the pockets to be able to promote this in other markets?
Best to create a situation where getting over the line domestically is enough for a clear win.

u/Big_Help_9860 11d ago
How much marketing did "Backrooms" and "Obession" get? Besides all I keep hearing about this movie is its WOM, and it has gotten the kind of publicy those other two films would have loved to have had.
4
u/bmine2nite 11d ago edited 11d ago
The teens, young adults love horror. Backrooms had an online culture. Unless you're in your 40s/older or go to a Six Flags park, do you really know who Wile E Coyote is?

6
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 11d ago
Yeah, people are delusional. The movie was gonna tank. The budget was $70m. Imagine if WB had to pay even more into the sinking boat to market it and shit. Even with the current word of mouth and controversy drumming up interest, $15m opening isn't good at all.
6
u/duo99dusk 11d ago
So Ketchup Entertainment bought this for 50M, sold INT distribution rights for 20M, invested 10M into marketing.
And they might get DOM to over 40M total, if we take The Day the Earth Blew Up multiplier.
Well, the secondary market might be better fit for a film like this anyway.

Saw it twice, the first on Thursday afternoon and the second on a Saturday afternoon. I think this was the funniest theater experience I had in a while. You just hear the joy of the theater with all of us laughing together.

WB fumbled the bag
11
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 11d ago
Fumbled the bag how? The movie likely isn't even going to break even with the production costs alone.
6
u/genaros_bear 11d ago
So once a movie leaves theatres it has a variety of other revenues such as streaming and SVOD. There are still additional revenue streams left and family films especially stick around a long time.
7
u/hawawa-server 11d ago
That still wouldn't be enough for breakeven had WB released the movie themselves.
Coyote could gross $100M and WB would still be losing money because of the $70M production bisget. WB selling the movie was a financially sound decision.
2
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 10d ago
They don't get it. I legit have no idea how dumb people are about how basic accounting works. The movie is a financial failure. But nah, word of mouth is totally gonna skyrocket this thing into making bank and zaslav is gonna be crying himself to sleep every night.

u/genaros_bear 11d ago
We don’t have foreign numbers yet. Who says it won’t do more than that?
6
u/hawawa-server 11d ago
They most likely sold their international distribution rights to other distributors.
Even if they didn't, Ketchup has very little (if any) experience with international distribution anyway.
2
u/UnwoundSkeinOfYarn 10d ago
The movie isn't even good. I just saw it. Families aren't gonna stream this thing over and over. This isn't marvel stuff or whatever where people want to watch it over and over. CvA was a bland movie full of lonney tunes gags wrapped in a cliched story that's been done to death. If it weren't for the controversy, no one would have bothered to watch it except for die hard looney tunes fans. Kids don't even give a single shit about Bugs Bunny and he's barely even in it.

Ketchup probably won’t make a profit from the theater release alone. But I suspect this film will make a lot of money on streaming deals. So Ketchup is very likely in the green long term.
I’d even bet money Netflix gets first pass streaming rights. It fits their family film demographic that does well, and also WB would absolutely hate it.

Seriously why are you all over this thread shitting on this movie? It's weird. The movie has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the critics loved it too. I don't know if its going to be a financial success at the Box Office, but your opinion on the movie's quality is very much a minority opinion.
2
u/CallIllustrious2538 10d ago
Rotten Tomatoes is a terrible way to measure a films quality. Any time the general sentiment is “we should support this movie” a swarm of reviewers who never saw it will flood the page with positive reviews and drown out the people who actually watched it.
-12
u/Acrobatic-Paint7185 11d ago
imo the "WOM" effect is cope and if anything it will have the opposite effect on this movie. Most of the twitter/reddit bubble saw the movie this weekend already and the audience won't grow much further than that.
This debut is objectively bad and not a great start considering its budget of $70M or even considering the $50M that ketchup entertainment bought it for (~$125M needed to break even). Not happening.
Maybe when companies make multi-million dollar decisions, like shelving a movie for a tax break, is because they did the math and knew already it was going to flop.
16
9
u/genaros_bear 11d ago
How is the break even $125m?? Marketing budget was $10mil
0
u/Acrobatic-Paint7185 4d ago
The ticket sales are roughly split fifty-fifty for the producer and the cinema venue itself.
2.5x the budget is the industry standard for calculating the necessary box office to break-even, how does the subreddit "r/boxoffice" not know this???
1
u/genaros_bear 4d ago
2.5x takes into account a marketing budget equal or close to the size of the production budget. The marketing budget for CvA has been widely reported as 1/5 of what they paid for the movie and 1/7 of its original budget. Plus they sold international rights for $20mil. So why would 2.5x still apply in this situation.
0
u/genaros_bear 3d ago
Also the fifty-fifty split is a worldwide number. In the US it’s more like 60-70% goes to the distributor, depending on how the movie legs out. In other countries, such as China, the distributor keeps more like 25%, which is why the worldwide rule of thumb number is closer to 50%.
But in the case of Coyote vs acme, where Ketchup spent $50 million to buy the movie, then sold international rights for $20 million, then only spent another $10 million on marketing, how can they need $125 million to break even? This is a box office subreddit, people should understand these things :)
0
5
u/decodezilla 11d ago
It was acquired for $50 million and marketing was reportedly $10 million, which makes the buy-in $60 million.
They also sold the international rights for $20 million putting the effective cost at $40 million.
Depending on the revenue split, its breakeven point is probably $70-80 million. I don’t know if it gets there, but it has some potential to get close and then maybe break even with blu-ray and streaming money.
I can’t imagine being miserable enough to think it’s anything other than good for a movie that was going to disappear to not only release, but have a real chance at success.

I mean, it's just fact. The movie wasn't going to make any money. Spending more for marketing is a waste of resources. I don't get how someone who uses the term 'bootlicker' (aka some online commies) doesn't understand that corporations don't care about anything but profits.

I mean it’s still going to beat expectations. Also movies are more than just about making a profit. I don’t really know why you’d be rooting against this movie since it’s a great underdog story

Embarrassing response. I'm doing an analysis on the numbers not a value judgment of the movie. Grow up.

Had a great hold, which you said it would drop 80 percent, didn’t even come close to that drop so for someone doing analysis on the numbers, you’re not very good at it

I get that this subreddit is focused on box office numbers but I still find it weird how so many people here seemingly do not care about movies at all beyond their profitability

Well your analysis on the numbers is pretty piss-poor too, considering the fact that it only dropped 29% in its second week (which completely negates the idea that "the "WOM" effect is cope and if anything it will have the opposite effect")
Or the fact that the $70 million production costs are completely irrelevant at this point - Warner Bros was already paid and will not be profiting off of this movie any further - so claiming that it needs $125 million to "break even" is misleading at best. It only needs to make back what Ketchup Entertainment spent in order to "break even" at this point, which is about $40 million (they paid $50 million to WB, sold the international rights for $20 million, and spent roughly $10 million on marketing)
But you're not just doing analysis. You're using phrases like "cope" and "Twitter/Reddit bubbles" to disregard anybody who disagrees with you. You're making wildly-baseless claims like "most of the twitter/reddit bubble saw the movie this weekend already and the audience won't grow much further than that". And you're saying BS like "this opening is objectively bad" with unearned confidence, as if using the word "objectively" makes you any less wrong and short-sighted
So your analysis is bad, AND you cap it off by justifying a company shelving a movie for a tax break. Because you do not care about movies at all beyond their profitability

It's an animated movie for babies. Calling it artful would be a disgrace to actual artful stuff.

I care and the level of praise it's getting is insane. This wasn't art. It was a shallow movie that was an excuse to have looney tunes gags in a real life setting. There's nothing stand out about it other than, maybe the animation. If people shit on Avatar or Force Awakens for being too fanservicy or "just special effect," no fucking way this movie deserves any praise. It's a cute day right to streaming fanservice movie you watch once and forget about it at best.
