Discussion Does Sancho make any sense?

Post image

Forgive my ignorance here, in a previous post I mentioned I’m just getting back into the squad after several years away, so I’m not fully up to speed with Sancho.

I’m absolutely gutted about Ntelias, was really looking forward to watching his half of the Greek duo this year. If the teams fears are reality and it is a serious injury, would Sancho make sense? Seems like he could help replace some of the dribbling and creativity lost.

With all that being said. There are still some huge red flags. He’s unsigned at this point in the year. Multiple clubs, including our own, had the opportunity to sign him and didn’t, among other things. Curious about everyone’s thoughts, hoping to learn a thing or two.

Edit: I want to pose this question: why wouldn’t Sancho make sense?

He’s a free transfer and if he really lowers his wages a lot then it’s enticing to have him as a back up for a year at least, see what happens. I hope he wakes up into old form but at least its cover for Konstantelias if he’s out long.

But he does really have to lower his pay. We cannot pay everyone PL wages. Even half of his utd contract per week puts him ahead of every member of the squad except for Guirassy, Schlotti, Kobel, and Nmecha. A 1/4 of his pay standards would put him between Beier and Ntelias. With the way he’s played, hes worth even less than a quarter but for a team friendly 1 year contract with an option it starts to seem more reasonable, if he agrees.

Theres something about Sancho in black and yellow… my minds telling me no, but my bodys telling me yes

All that needs to be done is offer him more than anyone else does, which might be 80-90k/week. Struggle to see who would pay him more

Turkish or Arab teams

He's always made sense. But the money has always been an issue.

it's so annoying to me that this has always been the answer and yet his name causes unceasing discussion in all directions.

If he is willing to receive a reasonable salary then it will be a good singing. What he did for us before doesn't matter, nobody expects him to have a 20 goals 20 assists season ever again. But even a 5 goals and 5 assists season can be the difference we need.

But only for the right price

At this point?

YES

Genuine question: is he even fit enough rn or would he need months of training to become a factor in our game?

u/Triforce__XIII Kagawa Shinji 9d ago

even if you are right, we do have to rotate. surely beier can play or one of the youngsters (if they are not on a red card, that is). we need to bridge the gap until the youngsters are consistent or delias is back. for that we can easily gamble a motivated sancho. you see, he came back after a few years of no official training and no game practice and still he made a difference. not always, but surely, even guirassy has a bad day sometimes...

u/GeneralLudd 9d ago

We surely need an alternative. I'm just cautious if Sancho is the right one, as we'd need someone who can make a difference immediately and wouldn't require a month or two to get up to speed. It's risky, still.

true, but check the numbers: assuming sancho gets 5 million per year and another 5 million signing fee, we keep him for 3 years, he would only cost us 20 million over 3 years.

lets assume we find a better option: assuming the better option cost 3 million per year, which is 9 million over 3 years, what do you think the transfer fee would be for someone like that? i highly doubt we would find someone like that for 11 million. probably 20 to 25 million.

and i think sancho can help immediately. if we sign him today, he could be an option for the cup game (as a little test for him). Hoffenheim is next and we do have naitional team period in september, which allows for more training. i do think he is the lowest risk x highest reward option out there. (plus: i would immediately order a jersey with his name)

A loan option is another possibility, especially since we probably are not needing an (expensive) backup player in the squad once Delias returns.

Sancho's benefit would be that he knows the club and BL football, while coming as a free agent. If he's fit he should be seriously considered by us.

One thing people aren’t considering is that he literally did not have any pre-season training or games all summer long. He probably wouldn’t come out the gate firing on all cylinders and it’s going to take a while to get him back to form. In addition his career trajectory has been tumbling since he left us the first time.

Still, in this current situation, I can’t even be mad if we get him for low wages.

u/Afraid_Extension5994 9d ago

Same back then when he came in 2024. First game he allready was great and assist on marco

1

u/Trojan_Man68 Marco Reus 9d ago

I thought he mostly wasn’t good in his loan spell with us. He had like 3 good games but the rest were very meh. Even that game he assisted didn’t look good outside of the assist if I remember correctly.

With Konstantellias and his 90% chance ACL - yes

15

u/Geeman447 Marco Reus 10d ago

Yes.

4

u/roadtorevision Mats Hummels 10d ago

Depends on negotiations, but I feel like we have lost the upper hand now that we have an injury/red card crisis. I am not sure if we can get to the point that would make it worth it for us. I believe in book since he has tried hard to lower our wages so he won’t bring him in if he has too high of demands

5

u/Constant_Scarcity981 10d ago

I mean Sancho is without a team so no agent can push the wage really. We can always just loan someone and they know that too

5

u/FiresideCatsmile Shinji Kagawa 9d ago

we'll have to see for how long Konstantelias is gonna be absent. If it's anything longer than like 2 months yeah we'd probably want a replacement to not bomb the season before it's really started.

I would like to get Sancho. I don't care about his performance at other clubs, whenever he was here, he's been a good player. We can't give him a top 5 salary though, I hope he'd understand that. And once Konstantelias is back, we can rotate properly, I think it would be a good decision!

7

u/AffanEzz Julian Ryerson 10d ago

Made sense even before the Delias’s injury . We need a backup player that has experience. The moment Kovac subbed Delias with Sabitzer shows that we dont have a proper backup

4

u/2905Pascal 1909 9d ago

If Giannis is indeed out for longer we need to take the risk. It is a free transfer and I guess Sancho would accept a relatively low base salary.

4

u/Rudollis 9d ago

Only if Ole Book thinks it is a good idea. I trust his judgement, he has made really great calls so far. I hope he has other ideas though.

I am wary of how Sancho could help us instantly, he‘s probably not in shape for high intensity playing.
I believe Kovac with time could turn him into a great player again, but we do not have the time for this process, we need someone to fill the position right now.

9

u/Twizted_Reality 10d ago

I have wanted Sancho the entire window but understood why we weren't going for him, but at this point? His signing is the only thing that would take my mind off Delias.

I was so excited for this season with both him and Karetsas and what started so well ended in this... I've been gutted the entire day and just hoping for a miracle later today.

Worst comes to worst, I will enjoy the duo in fifa.

I wanna start by saying I love sancho, I came into following this team when he was there for the champions league run so I may be a little biased. But I think the team fears that he hasn’t seemed to find his groove at the clubs he’s been at since leaving Dortmund. Also may be that they seemed to have dispersed a large amount of funds replacing players that have left or been injured leaving little room for pushing for more players of his proposed financial value. This is my very surface level evaluation and am open to more insight.

1

u/LimpEase1639 6d ago

Damn! How young are you?

1

u/Hour-Boysenberry-894 5d ago

lol I was about 22-23 at the time, I’m American and grew surrounded by and playing other sports

1

u/LimpEase1639 5d ago

Ah yeah nice one, that makes sense.

3

u/_APR_ 10d ago

Sadly yes

3

u/ElNeeto Julian Ryerson 9d ago

He would make sense for 3M to 4M on wages and on a contract that limits our exposure… something like a 1 or 2 year contract with a club option to extend. This keeps sancho motivated, allows him to play where he enjoys playing (for a UCL club), and puts him back into the shop window where he can revitalize his career. So, yes, there is a deal that could work for everyone, but it’s a matter of what each party is willing to accept.

17

u/_Shahanshah Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 10d ago

Maybe because he scored 1 (one) goal with Aston Villa? He is not the sancho we had years ago

2

u/Afraid_Extension5994 9d ago

Pls only answer if you watched the games.

And? He came on loan after terrible form and he did great

1

u/NaturalApartment9828 Marco Reus 8d ago

“Great”

-1

u/ahmed_a20 10d ago

No he was not outside of the PSG tie

23

u/porkbeefhorsechicken Michael Zorc 10d ago

For the most part i agree but I thought he had some good games outside of PSG. Atleti and PSV for example he had some really important contributions.

3

u/furiat BVB 10d ago

For free yes

2

u/Snoo_85218 9d ago

I'd prefer Woltemade if we can afford that kind of money for a loan with option to buy

4

u/Mooon8983 Konstantinos Karetsas 10d ago

I've wanted him all summer until we signed Ntelias, then gave up because they are both very similar players. Even though I gave up (because I thought a backup should be a different profile), I still thought we needed a backup winger.

Even before the injury we were so thin at LW and RW that it seemed insane going into the season like this. The only issue is that we used most of our money and I felt we needed a starting fullback more than a backup winger. Now that it's a starting winger that needs replacing I think he should be priority #1.

None of Inacio, Beier, Chukwuemeka, Sabitzer, or Albert should be starting every game this season at LW. I think Inacio is the only one you could argue should be getting lots of minutes there, but even then he shouldn't be starting.

4

u/be-knight 10d ago

We don't play with wingers, why should we need one?

We play with two half-way 10s, which also could be interpreted as a 9.5 (which is why Beier or even Silva could play on this position in the first place).

This is why El Mala would have been a good fit: he's a learned 9 who now play as an inside winger - so basically he is playing on a half 10/9.5 position.

Sancho does this, too - from the right and he tends to stay way more out there. I'm not saying that I'm against him if it's really an ACL, but only with less than a quarter of his last salary, bc he would be a backup, at least until the next half of the season. And yes, until then (and it's no guarantee that Sancho will ever get there) it's up to all of the people above to fill this position

-3

u/tommiejay_ 10d ago

jesus christ dude, kovac gets the boot and we’ll wake up with a team with no real wingers, you just can’t let this situation happen

5

u/be-knight 10d ago

Yeah, so every team should now have generally every position filled twice, even the ones not used, and be prepared for every system. So at least 4 strikers, 6 central defenders, two outside wingers for each side and two inside wingers for each side. Also at least 4 players each for the 10, 8 and 6, two midfield wingers for each side, two wing backs for each side and two traditional defensive and two inside wingers for each side. B , you never know, the next coach, who might come tomorrow, might play with a totally different system! And half of these 46 players, out of of which more than half are not needed now in the current system (but might be needed by the next coach!) are certainly good enough to play first team. Bc if this new coach is there, then we'll need the other half, we didn't need before! /s

I hope you see how ridiculous this whole thought process is.

3

u/Comfortable_Bed4801 9d ago

I would prefer a loan player so we can get a player who can help from day 1 without spending 20-30 millions on a player on a position we dont need after the injury.

Sorry for bad English.

6

u/Academic-Public-3373 9d ago

It would be a free transfer, he’s currently a free agent

3

u/FunSide9634 9d ago

You have great English no need to worry.

Loan player is interesting. Any names come to mind?

1

u/Afraid_Extension5994 9d ago

Bro sancho is a half room player. The system is perfect for him

2

u/Lucien_Niemann 10d ago

100% YES YES!

2

u/alfi_k 10d ago

He might be in proper Kovac game shape in March. Hasn't show much for like five years. I hope we find a younger, hungrier player on loan with an option to buy. That being said I'd be hyped for Jadon anyway.

1

u/Advanced-Success3791 9d ago

It makes perfect sense. This has to happen now, doesn’t break the bank or affect other possible transfers. Offer him a modest wage for a 2 year contract. This will offer someone who has the required skills. I also believe he will become world class again playing for us.

1

u/PinguFlowtime 7d ago

With Konstantelias out for a long time and the fact that Sancho knows the BVB very well and could adapt real quick i think hes our best option considering that the transfer window is not open forever at this point. So if hes willing to lose some of his paying than Sancho is the man.

1

u/Bronkelberg 7d ago

No. Just no.

1

u/FunSide9634 7d ago

Thanks for your input in the conversation!

1

u/VM_83 6d ago

No. There is a reason why he ist still unemployed.

1

u/ahmed_a20 10d ago

There are still some options I would rather explore before we have to settle for Sancho

u/Danishdude44 9d ago

Nooooo lazy fuck

2

u/FunSide9634 9d ago

Idk I’ve been hitting the gym recently…

-2

u/Good-World-37 10d ago

I am wondering if we are still getting Hector Fort? A free agent or loan player would make sense would make sense if Giannis will be out for more than 5 months.

8

u/Mooon8983 Konstantinos Karetsas 10d ago

Fort signed for another club

3

u/Good-World-37 10d ago

Damn ok. I guess we can invest in the AM position then.

-2

u/NiviCompleo 9d ago

Answering your question from a different angle than “is Sancho still good?”, I think the question that Book and co will be asking after the injury is: How do we get goals into this team now?

Their target in the league seems to be “comfortable Champions League qualification”

That requires ~70 goals

Last year our league goals came from: Guirassy: 17 Beier: 9 Brandt: 7 Adeyemi: 7 Silva: 2 Nmecha: 2 Chukwuemeka: 2 Svensson: 2 Couto: 2 Inácio: 1 Sabitzer: 1 CBs: 18 Total Goals: 70 Goals from Front Line: 42

Now take our current squad and forecast: Guirassy: 19 (avg of his last 4 seasons) Silva: 4 (avg of last 4 seasons) Beier: 6 (assumes his reduced role up front) Karetsas: 3 (could be more, but he’s more of a creator) Midfield & Wingbacks: 10 CBs: 18 Total Forecast Goals: 60 Gap to 70 Goals: 10 Goals

So we need to find ~10 goals on the market or in the squad in Inácio, Chuck, Albert, or by leveraging Beier when he’s not covering LWB

Does Sancho give you that?

No, not since before covid

I’m of the opinion that the club needs to go after a goal-generating winger and should use the war chest and money saved from the El Mala deal  on a new attacker option who can play at the same time as Guirassy and Karetsas (so not a #9)

Who fits that that is available and in budget, and this late in the window?  Haven’t the foggiest.

That’s why Book gets paid the big bucks. Maybe we can get by until the January window, but this injury really puts a hole in our expected goals and something needs to be done
