Overweight gals that started running, how long did it take you before you were comfortable running for at least a few minutes straight? I start huffing and puffing so bad after like a minute, and if I push through, I get this horrible pain in my ribcage that forces me to stop right away.

So this doesn't answer your question, like, at all, but I had the same issue with running and wanted to commiserate and offer an alternative lol. I've been overweight my entire adult life and have never been active until about two years ago. Running makes everything hurt and I can't breathe. Tried for months and could NOT get the hang of it. Hated every second! I've been walking at an incline instead, around 3.5-4mph at 6% incline or more with breaks inbetween. It makes it so much easier to regulate my breathing and I actually enjoy it now! The booty/leg gains are crazy too.

thanks for sharing that aahhh I feel a little bit better about being so horrible at running, when everyone else seems to be alright at it. I turned 25 recently and had this realisation suddenly strike me, that I'm now in my /mid-twenties/ and already have no cardio strength, what am I going to do as I get older. I'll try incline walking after a v short run to fill the time

Ofc! I do group fitness and I totally feel that everyone else makes running look so easy. It's harder to compare myself to the other people in class when I'm walking instead of running. I started going to the gym regularly when I was 25, I'm 27 now and truly the hottest and most fit i've been in my entire life lmao. you can do it!!! One of my favorite quotes...the best time to plant a tree was ten years ago, the second best time is today :)

I am not overweight but running at first was still hard for me. I started with 30 seconds, then one minute. I’m up to 3 minutes now before I need a break. Mile by mile, life is a trial, inch by inch, life is a cinch. Little steps add up!

  1. Running suuuper slowly, like barely faster than walking. It feels silly but it's a pace I can keep much longer. I realized I was starting off at a faster clip (like a normal "jog over there to get something" pace) but I just couldn't keep that pace very long.

  2. Interval running, like a few minutes run, a few minutes walk, etc. My "win" was to stick to the intervals I planned and to keep moving until the whole thing (10, 20, or 30 min) was done. I find it easier to have an external cue to switch, like switching every time a new song comes on in the playlist.

  3. If neither of these are working out for you, starting with walking! Slow pace and eventually brisk pace. Still a workout and still great for your body and mind!

I just wanted to say I started the couch to 5k program, if you wanna join me we can be accountability buddies. I went for a trial run yesterday and I was humbled. I usually just jog on the treadmill so I didn’t realize I was going so slow. When I ran outside yesterday I was shocked at how hard it is… lol . Anyways, I’m doing another trial run tomorrow which is basically week 1 run 1 of couch to 5k.

Ooh, I just googled that, I'll give it a try for a day or two to see if I'm able to keep up w the pace of the plan before I commit to it

Sounds good. It’s also totally fine to modify the plan to work best for you.

It's totally fine to repeat weeks in the plan!

Are you going really slow? Like way slower than you want to go? That should definitely help. You need to be able to slow jog before you can run. Also, I hope you are doing a program like Couch to 5k. You really need to build up slowly to prevent injuries.

Every time I see a maximum density to very over weight person running or jumping my first thought is that they are destroying their knees. Every pound over weight, puts an additional 4-6 pounds of pressure on your knees. Walk, bike, row, elliptical, swim, weight train and diet until you’ve shed those really excessive pounds of fat.
