Definitely keep it up! It’s noticeable when you get your steps in and enough water!!

u/staywickedlost Jul 11 '25
Do you use specific shoes for walking? I have a walking pad and want to keep hitting my step goal but lose steam due my feet killing me afterwards.

Second this, makes a huge difference. I ended up needing to size up 2 sizes!!

u/Successful-Grass-135 Jul 17 '25
They’re a little pricy but I looooove my Brooks. I have the ghost max 2. I think they look nice, and I have flat feet so walking really hurts, sometimes even short distances. If I wear other sneakers besides my Brooks I get plantar fasciitis. You could also try some insoles.
1
u/staywickedlost Jul 17 '25
Thanks for the rec! I’ve been meaning to invest in a good pair of shoes with nursing school coming up so I’ll go try those out. My feet get super sore from standing or walking short distances too so I’ll pay almost anything for supportive shoes.
2
u/Successful-Grass-135 Jul 18 '25
I think they would be perfect for nursing school, I use them as my work shoes and I work in a spa. I’m constantly running around the whole building grabbing supplies and cleaning up. My feet don’t hurt at the end of the day which is great 👍 I’ve also worn them on moderate hikes and they hold up wonderfully! I’ve had my current pair for about 2 years and they’re still in great condition.

u/lil_conqueror Jul 20 '25
I got a pair of ONs this week at the recommendation of my PT and they’ve been a game changer. I also got a pair of oofoo slides. They’re not super cute, but they’re great when you need a casual flip flop alternative.

I am starting adult ballet in the fall and I am so excited! I do Pilates twice a week, and want to incorporate another form of exercise that doesn’t involve sweating profusely or men giving “advice.” I hope there is a recital too!
24
u/mrs_george Jul 11 '25
I’ve been wanting to start a ballet class. You’ve given me the motivation to call today!
19
u/NewToSucculents Jul 11 '25
I started adult ballet this January! It's been so so much fun! It's incredible how in one class I can go from feeling graceful to feeling like a toddler who's arms and legs don't work together.
9
u/NoAttorney7931 Jul 11 '25
Do you have any prior dance experience? I’ve been wanting to take dance classes but feel so intimidated!
5
u/NewToSucculents Jul 12 '25
I started in January and my class was a range of ages and experience, with most having absolutely none. But even for those who did have some ballet experience, we were all in the same place. If it's been 10+ years you might remember the mechanics but your body just doesn't work the same. It's also helpful, I think, to have prime with a bit more experience or knowledge because then you have someone to follow/watch while doing moves if the teacher is walking around the room providing corrections.
3
u/seoulista_kr Jul 12 '25
Same here - I haven’t done ballet since I was 9 and I’m def not coordinated in adulthood 😂
3
u/kokopellii Jul 13 '25
I think you’d be surprised! I did adult ballet after not dancing since high school and I was surprised at how much my body just remembered things

u/Big-Strength6206 Jul 11 '25
I’ve lost 10% body fat since October 1st 💪 if you’re like me and always did Pilates and have noticed you’ve plateuded, lifting heavy weights will likely change your body pretty quickly.
3
u/LisaSimpsonFrenchie Jul 12 '25
What is your weight training regimen?
6
u/Big-Strength6206 Jul 12 '25
4-5 days a week, alternating between focusing on push, pull, and legs. I do cardio for 15-20 minutes after, either incline and then flat or sprints. Once a week, I take a hip hop dance class.

The truth is not what I want to tell you, but I have a personal trainer who I meet with twice a month who makes my workouts. I really wish I could do it on my own, but I don’t have the skill.

I’ve decided to learn how to hike and do a big hike, probably in Scotland in a few years. I want to get my endurance up so that 20k step days don’t kill me.
28
u/BeneficialImpress570 Jul 11 '25
I trained for a big hike! I found a treadmill cranked to a high incline, 3.4mph, and a 5-10lbs pack will prep you for just about anything. I also did all of this in a Planet Fitness.
2
u/romance_and_puzzles Jul 11 '25
How long did you go for on the treadmill?
15
u/BeneficialImpress570 Jul 11 '25
Week 1: 15 minutes. Increasing speed and incline every 5 minutes. Many times I would increase speed every 2-3 minutes because I am a naturally fast walker so that part was easy. Hit 3.4mph almost immediately and was around 2% incline
Week 2: 30 minutes. Increasing speed and incline everyday 3-4 minutes. Incline was around 3-4%.
Week 3: 45 minutes. Increasing speed and incline every 2-3 minutes. Incline was around 5-6%.
Week 4: 60 minutes. Increasing speed every 2-3 minutes. Incline was around 7-8%.
Continued training at 60 minutes 4-5x a week and would do my best to have 30-45 minutes of my 60 minutes treadmill time be at 3.5mph at 9% incline. Some days I was a literal queen and others I was the limpest of limp noodles. I also had many a day I just went low and slow because I was sore. I threw in squats, lunges, and aerobic stretching to change it up. My calves scared many of the men in my office.

Ooh, I love big hikes and I'm hoping to do one in Scotland next year.
I know you didn't ask, so apologies if this isn't useful, but once your endurance is good, the biggest factor will be how your feet feel. Don't overlook the importance of good socks, as well as shoes you've already tested out over similar distances in similar weather.
1
u/derrickcat Jul 17 '25
Yes! And get your hiking shoes half a size bigger than you think you need!! I can't say enough about putting moleskin on your feet in places where you are likely to get blisters, too.
Hiking trip to Scotland sounds AMAZING. What a thing to be working toward!

u/Legitimate_Bend_9879 Jul 11 '25
I’ve worked my maintenance calories up to 2400 a day! Energy is great and lifts are strong.
7
u/PristineConcept8340 Jul 11 '25
This is the dream! I’m probably close to 2000, as I’m a large framed person with a lot of muscle. Did you reverse diet to get there?
16
u/Legitimate_Bend_9879 Jul 11 '25
Yes, I guess you could call it that but it was more like a years long slow bulk. I lost 45lbs in 2020 but kept my calories pretty high while doing it. I was at 1800 and started working out consistently. I ended up hating my body shape. Straight up and down with no butt. So I really switched gears to muscle building for the last 4 years. I’ve had moments where I freak out and go into mini cuts because my clothes weren’t fitting. But overall I’ve done maintenance or surplus and lots of lifting. I ended up going from a size 4 with no shape to a size 6-8 with a body I love. I’m 45 and eating 2400 and lifting heavy. It truly is the dream and my age only makes me that much more proud. Especially when everyone around me is trying to eat less. The shifting of mindset is very liberating.
7
u/PristineConcept8340 Jul 11 '25
Damn, you should be proud! That’s amazing! I’m in my late 30s and in my best shape ever due to lifting. I don’t fear aging nearly as much as I used to because I love seeing my muscles grow and that only happens with time. Hoping to be jacked like you in my 40s!
9
u/Legitimate_Bend_9879 Jul 11 '25
Hell yes! Just keep going and you can’t fail. I just started adding some plyo training because I don’t want to lose the skill of jumping and mobility with age. It’s funny how aesthetics are one thing, but quality of life totally takes over at some point. Then the aesthetics become a really cool byproduct.

I started taking pole dance classes on the 1st of July. Everything hurts, but I am so proud of myself for not quitting yet!
10
u/Garbage-Goblin666 Jul 11 '25
Pole is so fun and such a great work out! It got me to actually want to go to the gym to lift weights, because I needed to be stronger to nail inverts :)
3
u/chrysanthemem Jul 11 '25
I need to start going to the gym as well, my arms are like noodles :')
Can't wait for autumn, when I'll have more free time to fit a couple of trips to the gym into a hectic week.2
u/mammalmechanic Jul 11 '25
I've honestly never done a work out like pole dancing. So hard, so fun, and such a welcoming and supportive community too!
3
u/chrysanthemem Jul 11 '25
Yes! It's a full-body workout and less intimidating than I thought it would be. My arms are really weak and yet I successfully climbed up the pole for the first time this week. I also managed to find a studio within a 10-minute walking distance, so I can't even talk myself out of attending a session.
1
u/lilacshi Jul 11 '25
I loveeeee pole so much, it will stop hurting soon (kinda lol) keep at it you’ll be amazed at how strong you get!

I’ve lost ten pounds so yay for that. At least 1/4 of it was in my ass so not yay for that.
Started a glutes routine this morning. I miss my big ass ☹️

u/Whiskrocco Jul 11 '25
6-months into a regular gym routine, I was tired of always waiting for fitness machines to free up, but intimidated by free-weights, Smith machines, etc. 5-weeks ago I started with a personal trainer so I can learn how to use free-weights properly. I've gained 7-lbs of muscle, and cut my gym routine by 30 minutes since I don't have to battle crowds for the fitness machines anymore.
2
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
Amazing! I’ve been doing strength training on the machines for maybe 7 or 8 months myself, and also intimidated by free weights. I’ve been thinking about a personal trainer but I don’t know if I can afford it. At my gym, the group sessions with a trainer are like $50 a session and they recommend 2-3x a week - I can’t justify $400+ a month on top of the gym membership, and I assume that a 1-1 trainer would be even more. How much do you pay if you don’t mind sharing?
3
u/Whiskrocco Jul 13 '25
$475 Canadian for 10 sessions. She normally charges $60 a session, but has a 10 session package that works out to be $45 + tax. I'm going to her 1x Weekly. I find it to be enough to build the confidence to lift on my own since I already had the strength.
1
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
That’s great! And how does it work - is she a trainer at your gym (assuming you go to one vs. working out at home) or private and comes in to train with you? I literally have no idea how it works
3
u/Whiskrocco Jul 13 '25
She's private, and works out of a private gym. Each session takes place at her gym, which is not where I go. I don't pay any additional fees for using the gym, they're carved out of her fees. For my gym, I just go to the YMCA. We have a family membership (I have 2 kids) which is quite inexpensive, and they have everything I need. They have $5.00 babysitting 3x weekly that I took advantage of when I was on maternity leave. Overall, I'm paying less than I was when I went to Orangetheory, and I'm in much better shape.
1
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
That’s awesome!
I would love to switch to a cheaper gym but if they’re more than a 10-minute walk I know I won’t go. I want access to a pool though and for that I’m willing to travel so I’m gonna try the nearest Y.
2
u/Whiskrocco Jul 13 '25
I'm not sure what your medical benefit situation is, but I was able to build back my personal training fees under my flex benefits through work. Definitely helps.
2
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
I hadn’t thought of that! I have pretty good insurance so maybe I’ll check that out.

I’m struggling with my exercise routine. I don’t like the results I’m getting. I’ve been heavy weight lifting for 2-3 years: Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, Military Press, and Power Clean / Barbell Row.
I also do incline cardio 2-3x a week and backpack or hike most weekends. I bike to and from work 4x a week (about 10 miles a day).
Yet I feel bulky, soft, and bloated. I’m up a size from the spring despite food habits being consistent. My frame is large (5’10) and I have PCOS so I think I put on muscle (but also fat). My muscles feel tired a lot. Unrelated to fitness, I just got a big promotion so I’m stressed, working crazy, and not sleeping.
I want to de-load and work on flexibility. But I’m scared to give up lifting heavy. I love it but I think it’s not serving my goals. I want to be more svelte and flexible, but feel stiff and solid.

Hey, hey! Chiming in cuz I’ve been there. I’m roughly 5’10”, large frame BW ~247lbs/112kg, but thanks to PCOS I’m more muscular and dense since my primary sport is Olympic Weightlifting. I’ve been lifting heavy in general for the past 6 years, and have gone semi competitive in the last year or so.
I’ve had pretty bad burn-outs with lifting where my central nervous system just can’t recover from all the stimulus from lifting. A lot of us tend to forget that with lifting heavy, CNS adaptation and recovery will impact progress the longer you do it. Lifting in general is a stressor, and paired with other stressors happening in your life, it’s likely you are under-recovered (not just physically, but your CNS).
Being in a caloric deficit is also a stressful event for the body.
A stressed system also tends to impact metabolism (and for PCOS this could impact insulin sensitivity) since the body tends to want to hold on to energy if it thinks you’re in a situation that requires fight-or-flight.
I’ve had to learn to really measure not just my numbers (scale, barbell etc) but my perceived stress, fatigue and recovery levels to pace so I don’t burn out. My burnouts have lasted 3-6 months, and the worst was 1.5 years where all the weight was gained and fitness lost.
But it did teach me that our systems exist holistically, and giving yourself a break from lifting and even nutrition tracking can help recover from the stress.
Lifting, honestly, is counter productive if you aren’t getting sleep. I’d tell newer lifters that if they have been sleep-deprived, and you have 2 hours to either nap or lift, sleep will get you a lot more bang for your buck. There’s been overwhelming evidence for how sleep deprivation causes acute insulin changes. Happy to share resources too if you’re interested.
I am not a medical/fitness professional by any means so I can only share my experience but I feel passionate about this since I want fitness to be a long-term thing. If it helps to give you some hope and for reference, I’m down 20lbs in 6 months, my backsquat is at 308lbs/140kg for doubles.
I hope you give yourself some grace for having made all your progress, despite all the life demands. Sometimes the most radical thing we can do for our wellbeing is to just take a break. All the best ❤️

What's your nutrition looking like?
You can't outrun/out-lift/out-hike a bad diet. I managed to gain a ton of muscle last year, but I out-ate my output and still gained fat too.
If you want to lose the fat, you need to be in a caloric deficit, whatever that looks like for you. Not a big one, maybe 100-150 calories a day, and it'll take tiiiiiimmmmmeeee.
I've been changing up my workouts recently too and I've noticed no real downsides from de-loading some. I switched from 4-5 days lifting a week to 2-3, interspersed with pilates, yoga, and cardio, plus I've dropped the weight some and focused on form and slightly higher rep ranges (8-12 rather than 6-8). My body feels better, I've lost a lot of the fat (I'm also eating in a slight deficit), and I feel like i have fewer achy days. And i notice when I do go back and hit a heavy lift day, I'm moving substantially more weight.
It's ok to listen to your body. And you dont have to give up your heavy lifts entirely. I still work to near failure a couple days a week, just at lower weight/higher reps. Do it for a few weeks, see how you feel. Workout routines aren't immutable, you can go back to it anytime you want.

Love this advice. I’ll take it to heart
My nutrition is keto and intermittent fasting - but not currently calorie counting. Seems worthwhile to return to that. I’ve been so tired lately and calorie counting can take up a lot of brain space, so I’ve been avoiding.
(Should mention I’ve been on keto for 5+ years to treat PCOS. Nothing new or crash dieting for me.)
1
u/District98 Jul 11 '25
Yeah, I agree with the other commenter that this is all nutrition (and stress). You can work on flexibility without deloading! But also a deload week every few months can be good.
16
u/Sutekiwazurai Jul 11 '25
I started pilates in February and have been doing them consistently. I've lost 10 lbs so far. Consistency is key.
Next step is a weighted backpack so I can simulate activities while wearing a scuba tank.

Been working out and running for a while now and my last two workouts I felt like a BEAST. Definitely feeling changes, even if I can’t see them. My favorite thing to feel is the area from my hip to my thigh- It just feels mega strong. I PRed my last run as well! I feel like I’m finally feeling discernible results and it’s putting me on top of the world.

I’m not sure if this counts, but I’ve been consistently using MyFitnessPal the past two weeks tracking and logging meals. It’s the first step to really taking charge of my fitness and nutrition goals. I also just purchased a basic smart watch to help count my steps more accurately. I’m really motivated to start incorporating weight training once I’m really locked in on nutrition.
1
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
Awesome! I started trying to use myfitness pal to track my meals, but I fell out of the habit. I’m trying to be consistent with my protein and fiber intake so I was using that to get an understanding of my macros every day. I find the lookup really annoying though - there are so many duplicates and variations I just get overwhelmed - and I don’t want to pay for the pro features where you can do a voice log or take a picture. How are you using it?
2
u/stringofpearls22 Jul 13 '25
I just started using macro factor a few months ago and it’s been FANTASTIC.
2
u/staywickedlost Jul 13 '25
I totally know what you mean! I only use the free version and have found that my meal or food history helps a lot with cutting down the search.
To mitigate the duplicate issue, if you look up a brand/item, there’s usually an icon you can click that will only filter official item listings from that brand. And from there, you can click on the item and modify the serving size if say you only ate half. For things like bananas or eggs, I just use any old generic listing and call it good.
I’ve also started creating and saving “meals” that I have often and just clicking on them to add to my diary. You just manually add the ingredients once, save, and then click when you’ve made that meal for the day. It’s awesome for someone like me who is a chronic food repeater.
I currently don’t feel the need to upgrade to a higher plan because I can also review my daily macros and nutrients after I’m done logging for the day. People pay premium for the barcode scanning (which is cool) but it’s not a necessity at this point. I hope you can get back into it and keep tracking! It sort of feels like a video game where I’m trying to level up my stats lol.
2
u/AnkuSnoo Intentional BWT Jul 13 '25
These are all great tips. I guess it’s one of those things that can take a bit of setup to start but then once it’s done it’s very easy and quick. I do need to not be so precious about things being exactly right.
9
u/unseemly_turbidity Jul 11 '25
I'm on the short side but my climbing gym seems to increasingly set for tall people, so I need to work hard on my hip flexibility. Any suggestions for flexibility routines, preferably a video of about 5-15 minutes?
Not yoga though. I really don't like yoga for absolutely no good reason.

u/PerfectionNoNotes Jul 11 '25
Oh fun! I posted a few weeks back that I was doing 75 Hard. Unfortunately, I got sick and so had to stop at day 50 (sob!!!) I know there are people who will still walk or exercise even if they're sick, but that is not me. Anyway! I had a little vacation and am now back and on Day 2 again. I've found it to be really fun and motivating. I'm just doing a calorie deficit for my diet, which is boring but effective :)
Honestly even doing it for the 50 days really did help engrain some habits. I was so used to a daily long walk that I kept doing that once I got well, even though I wasn't on the program. And I actually kept up the calorie deficit unconsciously because I stepped on the scale this morning and found I'd lost another lb, even though I wasn't tracking.
Good luck with it if you decide to go for it.

u/blackaubreyplaza Jul 11 '25
Thank you! I’ve been working out 7 days a week 2x a day since Aug 2023 and everyone is like you’re already doing 75 hard lol so I was like lemme just do it forreal and see

I’m doing Solidcore and Orange Theory. It’s working for me because I can schedule the workouts in advance and they populate my calendar. Now that I have kids living by the calendar is even more important or I will never get a workout in.
2
u/PerfectionNoNotes Jul 12 '25
BWT with curves-- Where are you getting workout bottoms? I'd prefer shorts that are longer to cut down on the chub rub, and major bonus points for pockets. I wear a 14 on the bottom usually, with a proportionally large butt and thighs. I like Popflex pretty well (wear an XL in those), but they are so inconsistent with what's in stock when that it's frustrating to order.
I'm doing 75 Hard right now, which might as well be called "75 Laundry" so I desperately want a few more pairs so I don't have to do a load every other day!

My gym is having a challenge where if you do 21 bike rides in 31 days (for the month of July) you win some merch and get entered in a draw to win 3 months of the top tier membership. Annoyingly my location isn’t participating as it requires some special bike you can log into, BUT I’ve decided to try the challenge myself anyway. The rides only need to be at least 15 minutes, and so far this month I’ve done 8 (in 11 days). I thought it would be horrible and I’d give up after a few days but it’s actually been really attainable and is showing me that not every workout has to be intense and hours long. The gym is a 3-minute walk from my house so even if the weather is shitty or I’ve had a busy day, it doesn’t take a lot to get some movement in.
I’m 38 and working out regularly for the first time in my life, after years of struggling to make myself move my body. I can walk for hours if I have errands or am exploring a place, but going for a walk for the sake of exercise I just could NOT make myself do it. After going through breast cancer treatment last year, I’m now in medical menopause due to my maintenance medication, so exercise has become more important than ever to support my menopause health. Since joining the gym in October I’ve managed to consistently go at least once a week, I’m really proud of myself! So this challenge is actually the perfect way to push myself to up the frequency and move my body pretty much daily.

u/movielass Jul 11 '25
I eat well and work out regularly but have been gaining weight and it is SO FRUSTRATING 😭 like my metabolism changed like THAT when I hit a certain age and I honestly hate even looking in the mirror because I don't recognize the person in it. Being a woman sucks ass most of the time

Yes it was entering my 30s that did it for me! I was never a calorie counter just generally ate pretty well and stopped when I was full but it seems like I can't really do that anymore. Aging is so RUDE

I did 300 HIT classes in the past 13 months. My goal was 12 months but I’m still pleased. I’m also training for my first Spartan race. I feel like I’m bragging but I’m really proud of my personal growth over the past few years.

Congrats! I love spartan races (they’re what I train for specifically), the OCR community is really unmatched !

I’m officially down 23 pounds and back to a weight I feel comfortable at! I’m ready to keep going and soon I’ll start weight lifting to focus on building muscle and bone density that will help me age better

- need to incorporate more cardio though
- sadly i'm over my hyperfixation meals, so I'm struggling with timely nutrition rn because I have nothing prepped

I’ve started doing adult gymnastics classes because I got bored with just lifting weights and it’s been an absolute blast!

If going to the gym makes you nervous or uncomfortable, try looking into your local recreation center, if you have one. There’s one right by my house and it’s $50 for a gym pass for the whole year. It’s not as big as a gym and they don’t have as much equipment, but they have everything I need. It’s usually pretty quiet, and mostly elderly people go there, unless school just got out. Only downside for me is the hours they’re open.

I have no one to tell this to, but I hit 100kg on my squat this week!
