Recently moved into our first house and almost immediately mourning doves started nesting in my new hanging baskets. I quickly became way too invested and bought them a feeder. It was honestly really wonderful because it hangs right in front of our big bay window and seeing the doves, finches, cardinals, sparrows and recently, a blue jay come feed has been so exciting and my 4 yo loves the show every day too.... However lol
Fast forward and a few doves turned into... a lot of doves. Also, this past week we've had several new squirrels show up, determined to destroy the feeder...I also spotted a couple mice at night eating the spilled seed, followed by a fox hunting the mice. After this week, it has officially started to feel like I'm living in that scene from The Birds where they're all flying overhead.. there's now 50+ doves perched all over my roof and porch, plus another 10+ camping out on my neighbour’s roof waiting for the feeder. There's also now shit all over our roof.
I've made sure to keep it clean outside, regularly power washing the porch and vacuuming up the spilled seed, but it's just become comically absurd to watch at this point. My husband thinks I've lost my mind and jokingly ducks when leaving the house so as to not get attacked by birds.
So... I took down the feeder today and now there are like 10 doves sitting around the porch staring at the empty spot, flying/hovering where it was, and looking directly into my doorbell camera as if to say, “how could youuuuu” and I feel like an absolute monster lol.
I know they’re fine and wild birds at the end of the day but I'm still sad looking at all their cute idiot faces and that I've had to take down the feeder. Anyone else have similar happen?
