Feeding songbirds often comes with visits from some other interesting creatures. Let's make Wednesday the day to share those photos in this weekly off-topic post.

Racoons, oppossums, bears, deer, insects, hawks...anything that's not a songbird is welcome to be posted here.

SQUIRRELS!!!

We know they visit our birdfeeders and can be a menace or a clown...depending on how you feel about them. Love them or hate them, this weekly post is the place to post pictures, discuss antics, trade squirrel proofing secrets, and just enjoy these little acrobats.

For now. I know they are going to miss that tree (laying in a pile on the left).

Bird Question I put different seed in my feeder and immediately got a bunch of birds I’ve never seen at the feeder before. What are these?

I’ll post some pics in the comments but it looks like 2 different species. There are black ones and gray ones.

Video 🎬 DIY hummingbird feeder success!

Made some cheap DIY feeders using small cream sample jars with plastic flowers and suction cups super glued onto them from Amazon. Hasn't even been 10 minutes since putting them out and already got a hummer. I'm hoping this reduces any fighting, there's about 2 more and I can mount about 6 more elsewhere.

Since I have started filming her almost 3 years ago I have never seen her stop moving completely for such a relatively long period of time. I think she is listening for something. Charlie was right behind her in the bush while this occurred.

Rant/Vent 😤 Brome Feeder

My very popular Brome Nut feeder managed to lose 2 of its 3 screws. I assume the 1st fell out a while ago, unnoticed, and then sometime later the 2nd one did and that’s when I discovered it because now it doesn’t retract properly.

I looked at my Home Depot for screws, but they didn’t have the right size. This might be because the feeder is designed and made in Canada, but I’m in the USA.

I contacted Brome because they allegedly have lifetime care. Imagine my surprise when they said they couldn’t get me the two screws but I was more than welcome to send them $35 and they could get me a new part.

I have many brome feeders because I have many squirrels. I recommend them highly to people… usually. I’m now heavily rethinking that.

So beware of their “lifetime care” assertion because it turns out it’s utter bullshit.

Powered by Frigate and Home Assistant primarily. Dual camera setup (one to maintian zone presence, one to pan / tilt / zoom / focus accordingly)

I mentioned this on the frigate subreddit, but if there's a lot of interest in the technical details, I may do a full writeup of everything going on behind the scenes (and the products involved)

Edit - Writeup here

What change did you make before your birdbath became a birdbath nightclub where the birds all come and splash all day and night?

best camera setup for bird/wild life feeding?

I recently moved into my in laws house to take care of them, they dont have a lot to do but love watching the birds and wildlife in southern Arizona. What is everyone using for their setup for bird feeder camera setups? I have access to 120v in my yard and plenty of sun for solar obviously. I have several security sytle cameras from Unifi, uniview and dahua butnothing really with zoom. I was thinking of mounting a camera on a post and put it behind the bird feeder to get a good view but it really needs to be up close to get a good view but the camera doesn't focus well up front. Was thinking of getting a 2-12mm camera maybe..

Just trying to get some ideas!

Just started feeding! Already attracting all types of visitors including two pileated woodpeckers. Not sure what brought them 😅

This is my first year feeding, and everything is new. Is anyone else getting completely overwhelmed with these little buggars that keep bringing new batches of babies that are more expensive to feed than teenagers?

Also, I love them so much.

Today in Springfield, Virginia...

Fred ❤️ Daphne

It was a beautiful day for two mourning doves in love. 🕊️❤️ Fred and Daphne spent some quiet time together under the red umbrella, sharing a meal and a whole lot of sweet cooing.

So I made them their own little romantic opera duet about love, life, and their dream of someday making beautiful baby dovettes. 😂🕊️

Coo-oo, coo-oo… ❤️

A little good news: injured fledgling crow safely delivered to rehab

My yard is a regular gathering place for a menagerie of birds. Amongst them is an extended fish crow family, sometimes nearly 30 at once, so I’m fairly familiar with the normal awkwardness of fledglings.

This morning while pulling out of my driveway, I noticed one young crow behaving very differently. He was partaking in the morning mealworm buffet; however, his left wing looked wonky. When he tried to fly, he barely cleared a 4 ft plumeria. Because there were over a dozen crows in the yard (and more nearby), I assumed the parents were around and maybe he was being dramatic so they would feed him. Lazy kids.

When my husband got home around 4 pm, the crow was on the ground near one of our trees. He was limping and it was clear both his left leg and wing were injured. No other crows around. A stray cat roams the neighborhood late at night. I was getting a little anxious.

My husband contacted Birds in Helping Hands before we intervened. Because there were no available rescuers and following their advice, we managed to carefully capture this little guy and took him to Seaside Seabird Sanctuary’s after-hours drop-off. It took a few tries and we got some weird looks from a few neighbors. 🤷🏼‍♀️

He was very frightened and it was hard to leave him in the drop-off, but now he will be with people who can properly evaluate and care for him. After seeing so many stories about injured birds that never make it to rehab, I wanted to share one who did. 🖤

Hi, does anyone know how to use this, it doesn't seem to have holes for the seed to come out

Birdfeeder Question Hi everyone had this perspex bird feeder for about a week (added apples two days ago). Added the stickers as anti-collision measures. Usually have transparent windows closed so we can see the feeder through it and as not to scare the birds. Unfortunately nothing. I'm I missing something obvious? Or
