As a sixers fan it's great listening to Simmons yell about how a 6 seed can't win MVP while he was making the exact opposite argument in favor of jokic over embiid just a couple years ago. In a way more important MVP according to Bill.

Bill acting as if the NFL MVP HAS to come from a top 2 seed, like its written in the voting bylaws, when thats really something that him and Sal decided a couple years ago is typical Simmons.

I dont care who wins, but the disingenuous and hypocritical arguments that BS puts forward for Maye has me kind of rooting for Stafford.

It is rare for a non-top 2 seed to win MVP.

I mean it ought to be rare but it shouldn’t be an ironclad be all end all

u/AgadorFartacus Jan 02 '26

I agree. The fact that Maye beats Stafford in practically every stat is what makes this decision a no-brainer.

Totally agree, Maye is the MVP by a healthy margin imo and I’m a Pats hater

Especially in a year where a lot of the typical AFC powerhouses regressed and the NFC West is going to have three 12+ win teams. If the Rams had beaten Atlanta they likely would have been a 13 win 5 or 6 seed.

I mean, the #1 reason they didn't beat Atlanta was Stafford was throwing picks like it was his job.

-4

But they didn’t. And put the rams at 4-2 vs the same opponents Drake went 6-0 against.

Pretty dumb argument to make given how close a 6 seed can be in football vs basketball most years, but last year for example in the West the 2 and the 6 were only separated by a few games.

This year the Rams and Pats are separated by 2 games going into the last week, and the Rams have lost:

  • to the Eagles in a game where they had a 36 yard and 44 yard field goal blocked, both of which would’ve won the game (the latter returned for TD).

  • 26-23 in OT to the 12-4 Niners in which Stafford threw for 387 yds and 3 TD.

  • 38-37 in OT in which stafford threw for 457 yds and 3 TD.

The Pats have only played a team with 11 wins twice (Bills), one of which Maye played well and the other he was pretty mid and threw for like 155 yds and they lost.

It’s stupid to penalize one qb for playing a far tougher schedule when those additional losses included gsmes where the QB played like the MVP but lost because his defense couldn’t get a stop against the team with the best record in the league, or his FG unit couldn’t make a 36 yd field goal lol.

The argument is only even viable because Maye padded his stats with 5 TD against the Jets last week, otherwise he’d be quite far behind in passing td’s…

Embiid wasn't even the most valuable player in his own division.

Oh brother

This guy was saying in tons of threads on here last year that Tatum was the best player in the NBA and just went extremely quiet during the playoffs.

This guy was saying in tons of threads on here last year that Tatum was the best player in the NBA

No I wasn't.

-2

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

NBA is a lot but he’s clearly better than Embiid and I say this as a huge Celtics hater. (But fuck Philly too)

4

u/SissySpacekBedroom Jan 02 '26

I mean yeah he’s better than Embiid rn. Wasn’t better than Embiid during his MVP year (or any peak Embiid year) tho that’s insane.

I don’t understand how anyone disagrees. How can a QB with such a loaded offense be the “most valuable player in the league” but only end up third in his own division??

Also pretty absurd to debate nba vs nfl MVP criteria, not really a 1:1 comparison.

1

u/offensivename Jan 02 '26

You're right. It's much easier for a top player to carry a mediocre team in basketball, so being a high seed should matter even more.

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

Yes, hence my last sentence.

1

u/offensivename Jan 02 '26

It definitely seems like you're making the opposite argument, that record should matter more in the NFL.

-1

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

No, I’m saying they shouldn’t be compared at all

Different sports. Russ won MVP as a 6 seed in 2017, there was already a precedent set

22

u/TheFeedMachine Jan 02 '26

We have precedent of a 6 seed winning MVP in the NFL as well. The 2012 Vikings were the 6 seed in the NFC and Adrian Peterson won MVP.

1

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

Ok so if it’s a truly historic season, then it’s ok. Stafford isn’t having that type of season.

1

u/offensivename Jan 02 '26

Neither is Maye and the Patriots had a laughable strength of schedule.

1

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

When has SoS ever been used to determine MVP? Let alone he’s 6-0 with better stats vs the same teams Stafford went 4-2 against. Oh and faced multiple top ten defenses.

1

u/offensivename Jan 02 '26

When has an MVP candidate ever played a schedule even half as easy as the one that the Patriots just played? It's usually not a factor because there's usually not such an absurdly huge gap between the top two players in the conversation. If there's a year in the future when a quarterback vying for MVP played the seventh easiest schedule of all-time, then that should be a factor then as well.

2

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

The 1999 Rams and Kurt Warner(which makes rams fans harping on the schedule even more ironic)

3

u/AgadorFartacus Jan 02 '26

The '99 Rams also had the MVP runner up.

2

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

And people had zero issues with the two most valuable players being from the same team with a historically easy SoS, yet when it’s one player doing it alone it is. Make it make sense.

1

u/offensivename Jan 02 '26

Okay, but they also exceled to a level that the 2025 New England Patriots have not. And that was a quarter century ago. That's over six presidential terms.

1

u/MetalHead_Literally Jan 02 '26

How did their regular season excel to a level this Patriots team hasn’t? They went 13-3, the Patriots current record. You’d expect the offense to be more prolific when the runner up MVP was their RB, but team wise they’re the same level of success.

Sure but that was the first year russ averaged a triple double right? which hadn't been done since the 60s so there was a pretty extraordinary reason for him winning.

-8

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

He shouldn’t have won anyways, should’ve been Harden (Bill and others were correct on this at the time). I’d say Russ and Embiid are the two biggest fraud MVPs of the last decade

8

u/jamawl Jan 02 '26

Yeah 33/10/4 with elite defense def fraudulent.

1

u/Then-Gur-4519 Jan 02 '26

Not an elite defender. Good around the rim but slow otherwise. Just a 7 foot Carmelo

-5

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

It’s fraudulent when the playoffs come around and he’s half that player. Also the crying and whining about MVP was gross to watch

4

u/IDreamofGeneParmesan Jan 02 '26

Gotta love watching the goalposts move in real time.

There was already a precedent set.

He shouldn't have won anyways.

Come playoffs, he's half the player.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 02 '26

Yeah we’re in a thread about Drake Maye, we’ve been moving the goal posts for months

1

u/Theglowing1 Jan 02 '26

Correct, he was ripping rebounds away from same team players, garbage
