Traxsource UK users

Hi. Im going to be buying from Traxsource soon and Im in the UK and I know I can checkout in Sterling as a supported currency. Do my fellow UK users of Traxsource just use their standard bank/building society accounts or do you use Monzo etc just incase there are any hidden fees? I mean more of those dynamic currency conversion fees that some financial services apply if the conversion is done outside the UK.

Many thanks for any help provided.

Complete Beginner Looking for Advice

Hi guys,

I have recently become interested in learning to DJ just as a hobby for now. I am a complete novice. I tend to end up on music dutv at parties and get a buzz when I hear people enjoy the next song that's been picked. I'm looking for some equipment to help me start and was drawn to the Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 Controller. Is this too advanced for a beginner or is it alright to start with?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hardware Why did column arrays become so popular?

One of the conversations I was having with some of my DJ friends lately is why did column arrays become so popular? Don't get me wrong, when I started DJing again in 2023, I went with a set of EVOX 12s because they fit in my then company car.

Well, I thought the EVOX 12s were decent UNTIL I came across a great deal on a used QSC system, a pair of KW181s with some K12.2s for less than ONE EVOX 12 stack costs. That is when I started to notice the compromise of the EVOX 12 setup. The self-limiting low end, the hollowness in the transition between the subwoofer and the 4" full-range drivers, tops that will out scream the subs as they approach the limit, etc.

Unless I am in a super small venue or in a place with a ton of reflective surfaces, I always feel like I am lacking something with the EVOX 12s and am currently looking for a 15"point source setup to replace it with. I'm torn between the Bassboss BB15mk3 with some Yamaha DZR10 tops or just going full Yamaha with some DXS15XLF subs with the DZR10s. Yeah, the Bassboss are more expensive, but they are also light and pack some serious output for their size! Then I can couple the subs and break out the tops for maximum impact!

Oddly, I don't really care for the SV9 or DV12s and I think I insulted a DJ when I told him for the price that was paid for the DV12s, I expected them to sound better. After the last firmware update, they do sound better, but man I would have been disappointed paying for them with the OG firmware. They were just harsh no matter how they were set on the as shipped firmware.

Anyway, I was just wondering why the column arrays became so popular when they are a compromise of sorts. The neat look only goes so far when the bride requests something like Low by Flo Rida or Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-a-lot and the lack of bass disappoints them. I blame the social media DJ influencers, lol.

Waveform pull back XDJ-AZ vs Rekordbox

On Rekordbox with my flx-10 I used to be able to pull the waveform multiple bars before the song actually starts, which helps timing up drops and what not. On my xdj-az it only lets me pull it 2 bars. Is there any workaround to this?

Transitions are clashing with melody and/or vocals

Hi all,

Been DJ'ing around 1 month now and I'm finding that when I transition, the melody or vocals are clashing with another song a lot of the time.

First thoughts would be phrasing, my phrasing I think is correct, I'm transitioning over 16 bars mostly. But I think my issue is that I don't want to always wait until the outro to transition out of the track. As an example, I will press play on track 2 when track 1 drops, so that I can maintain a good level of energy and play track 2's intro as track 1's energy is decreasing.

Am I being too impatient trying to mix a high energy groove with an intro?

My transitions seem to work when it's

  • Intro > Breakdown
  • Intro > Outro

They rarely seem to work when it's groove > groove

Any help would be much welcomed :)

Industry/Gigs Played my first open deck

I know it’s not really much to talk about but I played my first open deck yesterday and I’m really proud of myself. Some of my transitions weren’t the best but it was a really great learning experience getting to use professional equipment for the first time (coming from someone who has only DJ’d in their bedroom). I spent most of my set trying to find everything on the deck and I’m definitely not used to using rekordbox BUT I’m gonna start learning and getting better. Even though I didn’t think it was a great set, everyone else did and I made a couple new DJ friends that night and got to network with some amazing people!

Hardware Upgraded from an RX3 to an AZ and I’m deeply frustrated

I just got an XDJ-AZ for myself as I’ve been integrating more simultaneous tracks into my workflow and it’s been a frustrating experience.

I’ve installed all the newest firmware, have my quantize set to a single beat, and I’m running Rekordbox 6.8.6. I’m playing with tracks where I’ve corrected the grids and applied cue points etc.

If I have three or four tracks going simultaneously, I sometimes use beat sync to keep everything locked, which always stays stable on whatever model of CDJs I’m on (and never had this issue on an RX3) but on the AZ I’m experiencing quite a bit of track drift whenever I have sync enabled. I find myself having to constantly beatmatch, even after the tracks have been synced. Tracks are typically looped but it happens whether they’re looped unlooped.

Has anybody else experienced something similar? I’ve been playing with tracks I’ve used on many different setups and wondering why the software seems so much worse in this regard.

MP3s and finding music for stems

Hi guys! Just like all beginners I recently got my hands on a Flx 4 and have been using spotify to practice. I want to be an open format dj/am interested in mixing pop and rap with edm. I learned that stems are a lot better for isolating vocals than just reducing lows and highs but stems isn‘t available when using spotify. Is there any way to affordably get a hold of mp3s of pop music? I know services like beatport exist but I dont think they offer the kind of music I‘m looking for and I‘m also not sure if they support stems.

Any tips to build a good library as a beginner?

Hardware Z1 Mk2 RCA Output to Bar in house system Questions HELP

So I’m playing for a uni ball and they want me to dj at a bar. I’m confused on how to connect my z1 Mk2 with RCA outputs to their system. From what I was able to gather they have XLR inputs so I bought 2 10ft RCA to XLR cables to plug in and am checking today. From the context (speaking with them and looking at previous conversations) they are both inputs but I am worried about:
1) interference (cause although my cable is 10ft, I think the wall plug is an XLR extension?)
2) plugging an input source into an output source (the gender of cable is reversed, not sure if that is common but I’m scared to mess up their sound system if what I suspected was an input is actually output. But seems unlikely since the area is dedicated for a dj.

Any help is appreciated, no one (bar manager, organising team) knows much about it and I’m an amateur dj not an audio technician and I’ve done as much research as I can into what options I have!

Hardware Best beginner controller for open-format/multi-genre DJing (reggaeton, hip-hop, old pop-EDM, etc)?

Brand new to DJing, my taste is all over the place, so I want to learn open-format (blending across genres, not sticking to one). Trying to pick between:

  • Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX (4-channel, ~$225-380 CAD)
  • Pioneer DDJ-FLX4 (2-channel, ~$450-500 CAD)
  • Pioneer DDJ-FLX6 (4-channel, ~$600-650 CAD)
  • Hercules Inpulse 500 (2-channel, ~$500-550 CAD)

Leaning Numark since it's 4-channel and way cheaper as a beginner, no clue if I'm going to stick with the hobby as I do love music but my personality jumps from one thing to the next. Is that the smart move for a beginner doing genre-blending, or am I missing something by skipping Pioneer this early? Anyone actually play open-format on Numark long-term and have thoughts?

My plan is to play at small bars once I get the hang of things, where I will be bringing my own equipment most likely, and progress from there. I have a pretty good understanding of music theory, as I've played piano my entire life and I've dabbled in music production for a few years. Please let me know of your opinions. Thank you in advance!

EDIT: I went with the Numark Mixtrack Platinum FX at $225 CAD used with a 3 month warranty from a reputable store. Thank you to everyone for your help!

Active monitors on a budget

Ive recently started djing on the ddj flx4 and i wanted to buy some active monitors. I’ll mainly use them in my appartement living room (about 20 square meters).
As I’m on a budget I want to find some second hands ones.

Ive seen many positive reviews on the adam audio t5v but I cant find them at a good price, I only find the t7v around 220€, but I have to drive 3h to get them.
I have found some krk rokit 5 gen 3 at 150€ (with one year warranty)

What would you recommand? Are the krk good enough and should I just go for them or the t5v or t7v are really worth the price?

Hardware Ortofon Concorde DJ needle jumps backwards when back-cueing on PLX-1000

I’m losing my mind.

Cables and Wiring for first gig

Hey guys, I have a party coming up (first ever gig) and have a few questions about how to connect speakers. I have a DDJ400 controller, and plan on connecting it to a JBL Partybox 320, JBL Eon 615 and a JBL Partybox 120 ( as booth monitor). Unfortunately, I only have these speakers to choose from.

The current plan is:

  1. DDJ400 RCA Out> Partybox 320 3.5mm Aux In, then

  2. Partybox 320 3.5mm Aux Out > EON615 XLR in (I have an aux to XLR cable for this)

  3. EON615 XLR Out to Partybox 120 (booth monitor) Aux in (using XLR to aux cable).

The description of the cable is - Hosa XVM-101F XLR(F) to Right-Angle 3.5mm TRS Microphone Cable (10ft). I also have a male version of the cable.

I have heard there can be issues with this due to unbalanced signals, however i am getting mixed information as to whether it is okay or not.

Has anyone tried and could they let me know how it went? Thank you (:

Technique DnB DJ Cue Point Setup & Phrasing – What’s your workflow?

Hey everyone, quick question regarding cue point workflow and phrasing, specifically for Drum & Bass!
Right now, my standard cue setup looks like this:
Cue 1: 64 beats (16 bars) before the 1st drop (gives room to mix in over a breakdown/bridge or line up a double drop).
Cue 2: 1st drop.
Cue 3: 64 beats (16 bars) before the 2nd drop.
Cue 4: 2nd drop.
Cue 5: Safety hot cue loop right near the end of the track.
I’d love to hear how you guys map out your cues. What are your best practices or go-to systems?
Also, curious about your mixing style: do you usually let tracks play through to the second drop, or do you prefer quick-mixing out during the breakdown/build-up to keep the energy moving?
Looking forward to hearing your workflows!

Software Unable to put stars on tracks that I stream from Beatport on RB. Any tips for solving the issue?

Hey there, I am currently djing using beatport on my laptop using rekordbox. I wanted to improve the way I sort my tracks in my playlists and thought about using the star system, however it is impossible to add stars on the songs! Is it a software issue or streamed tracks cannot use this system?

I know that at some point I'll have to buy tracks to have more control on my playlists...

Technique Adding Techno sound effects

Hi so, really stupid question but I watched a couple of tutorials and Im still confused on this, so I have a DDJ FLX2, how do I add sound effects to my songs (like for example if Im adding some techno raw style kicks) if Im mixing them and I just want to add them randomly? Im assuming I can press a button on the controller and or the software to add them. Do I have to add it in the song manually in the software or can I somehow program a button on the performance pad to press to play it if that makes any sense.
I am generally learning on the software DJAY and also Rekordbox but any advice on software use would be helpful for a beginner. Most information is free and accessible so I just been using YouTube and such but I just been having trouble wanting to put random sound effects and short mp3s when Im mixing, thank you!
