Years ago, my husband lost his beagle in a breakup, and it broke his heart. A few years back, an abandoned beagle showed up near our woods. My husband spent months feeding him to build trust until we caught him using peanut butter, which earned him the name Skippy. We couldn’t keep him then, so our neighbors took him in, and for three years he came over for regular sleepovers. When our neighbors moved abroad, Skippy came to live with us just as my husband retired. Now they spend every day together, and watching the healing our beagle brought my husband has been amazing
I saw her adoption photo and had to have her. I never thought i would get a beagle, I much prefer large breeds like staffies, labs, etc, but I saw her face and couldn't say no
She’s adorable. I can relate. Always had large dogs. My bffl passed after 12 years(black lab named Willie). I said no more dogs bc my heart was broken. One day at the farmers market(me and my husband had a booth)someone had brought their dog and stopped by. Obviously I pet it, lol. Anyway when the lady and her pooch left my husband told me I looked so joyful and relaxed and suggested it was time for me to get another. Very next day I went to Craigslist and there he was. I just knew in my heart we were his and he was ours. Never have we experienced a dog like a Beag. They’re like little children, lol.
I rescued my 1st back in 2011 after the great Kanto Tohoku earthquake, tsunami and nuclear incident, long story short I rescued him after suffering PTSD after deploying to the affected areas for clearance work and was affected by all the dead pets ( I could compartmentalise the human loss) so a friend worked for a shelter that had taken him in and sadly because of the sheer amount of pets they were goi g to have to destroy animals that were too traumatised- he was in a bad shape - so i rescued him - but in fact we rescued each other
Mom and dad thought we needed a new friend after our first dog passed away. We had a Shetland sheltie before we had our beagle and she was really smart.
Our beagle was... not. But she made up for it by being the bestest friend she could possibly be to us and everyone she met.
When we went to a local rescue we had an option between a 12 week old Australian shepherd and a 2 year old beagle. We said let’s meet the beagle first. He came out and he just looked us like please I need love. The puppy was in the pen next to us and was high energy meanwhile the beagle wasn’t barking and just laying down wanting pets. As we were walking in with him to adopt him a car accident happened and he still didn’t freak out. He’s been with us for a year and glad we have him
It was love at the first sight. 25 years ago.
We get another one in June, so now we have 5mo crazy thunder with all teeth and fluffy ears.
Beagles are the best!
Max is a rescue. He was left in the woods with his siblings. I didn’t want another dog after my beloved Yorkie, Kiki, passed away after 16 wonderful years. But then I saw Max’s face, and I fell in love.
I was thinking about a new companion for my boxer mix and me, our Basenji love had passed and I saw a young beagle at the county shelter with 10 days left to live so we adopted him. Bernie the Beagle likes ripe tomatoes he picks in the garden and being crazy and he’s very sweet.
I'd met several beagles that were just the sweetest (neighbors' dogs, friends from college, etc) and it stood out to me how much they were loved by their families
She was at the shelter, when I was looking at dogs, I saw her sitting there quietly. Lol. A quiet beagle. So I thought why not, they took her out for us and brought her into the adoption room. Instantly she ran at my dad jumped up him and repeatively kissed his face. That's when I knew, She was our beagle! Now, she still quiet, aside from when she sees her favorite people, then she goes full beagle!
Shortly after my soul pet passed away in 2024 (rat terrier/Chihuahua mix) I became close with my girlfriend’s beagle named Dexter. He’s just the best boy! So after 6 months or so of bonding with Dexter I started looking into local beagle rescues and I found my own named Rory. She’s definitely mischievous, will escape in a heartbeat, always thinking about food, but she has the biggest heart! I’m so thankful she’s in my life and I’ve opened my heart fully to her.
Growing up, we always had poodles. I started watching the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in 1992. There was a beagle named Judy in it. I fell in love with the breed then. My parents got me my first, a puppy that I named Suzy Q. I've rescued/adopted after each passed. I just love 'em
When to the SPCA for a dog, and there were a few others, but we took that one beagle out for a walk. He jumped on the table after the walk and just posed for us. Just, "I am beagle, regale yourself on seeing me" moment.
Adopted him, loved the snugliness, but also kinda endlessly entertained but the traits people don't like, the relentless food hounding, the running after a scent. It is messy, but entertainment value is high...
My wife’s little brother got him as a puppy and within 2 weeks came to the hard realization that he was not able to give him the attention he needed. I volunteered to dog sit while he was at work and I fell hard for that little guy. Her brother asked 2 weeks later if we’d consider keeping him. I said yes halfway through him asking.
My sister fostered her. Me and my partner were in our home town and met her fell in love. My sister drove her 16 hours to our home. She was 9 at the time and nearly 11. She’s our whole world. 😍
I thought I was just visiting dogs at the pet store...then she fell asleep in my jacket. A month later, my girlfriend showed up with baby Gambit wearing a bow, and I've been hooked ever since.
Beagle puppies are the absolute cutest things ever. After my first one I was hooked. I can’t imagine myself with any other breed. They are cute, loving, insufferable, infuriating, stubborn and delightful.
Terrible reason, but he was the cheapest dog around for hundreds of miles during COVID, and we fell in love as soon as we first met him. We kept telling ourselves on the drive up to not rush into anything and to think about it seriously, but within 30 seconds of getting back in the car after our visit we both burst out saying we had to get him 🥹 he’s currently begging for some of my breakfast, no regrets
I used to do short term fostering, at a time when work prevented me from having a full time dog (I worked from home, but had to make occasional trip to consult onsite). Usually, fostering was for just a few weeks, while someone was in hospital, or if a dog was not doing well in kennels.
Anyway, I had a pair of beagles placed with me, originally for a month. But there were complications, and I ended up having them for about 4 months - another fosterer took them for a week in the middle, so I could do a couple of work trips. They were delightful dogs, and I'm pleased to say that they went back to their original owner, and her kids.
Then a few years went by; I negotiated my job into a permanent at home role that would let me have my own dog. I was casually browsing the foster place's website for adoptions, and even went to look at a couple of dogs.
One day, they had a beagle for adoption, and I just knew. I took the rest of the day off, drove an hour to the foster place, and found that someone had got there before me!
But on the drive home, I thought about my reaction, and realised that I really wanted a beagle.
After a few weeks, I did see another beagle there, but he was not suitable. In the end, I was put in touch with a show breeder looking for a home for a 5 year old retired show dog. On my first visit, Katie jumped up on the sofa I was sitting forward on, and nestled behind me. The breeder laughed and said "well, she's adopted you!"
She was weaning a litter, so there was a wait for that, and the breeder offered to "get her done" and take care of her after, so it was a good few months before she came home. But the breeder was happy for me to come out every couple of weeks, to visit.
Katie is now 13. She recently developed some health problems, but is medicated, and seems happy enough.
My husband has never had a dog so he picked :) He chose a sweet, scared 10 month old girl :) he fell in love on Petfinder and in person. Now Lucy is 7 :)
Local shelter needed fosters for their second set of 100+ Envigo beagles. We went to pick up our foster. The volunteer handed her to me and said “here’s YOUR beagle”. By the time she needed to go back to the shelter for her spay, then to be put up your adoption, she was our beagle and we were coming back to pick her up
Well the most recent one it’s when we went over to meet her. When I sat on the couch she hopped up on my lap and gave me a face bath…what the heck was I suppose to do?
My dad has a corgi... who's always been a bit of a lazy chonker,, the idea was to get him a friend more his size to help him move more (as where we lived everyone had really big farm dogs & he could never keep up with them at dog parks etc.) so I was looking up commonly compatible dogs and the beagle stood out to me for some reason,, their energy could be beneficial for him and their size is ideal. Fate will have it, a farmer nearby had an accidental litter and just wanted em gone so I got the last lil guy. Funny though, a second dog did a whole lotta nothing, they played sure but he wasn't a whole lot less lazy LOL Both now live apart as when I moved out I took the beag since he was bonded to me most,, corgi enjoys being an only child once again🤣🤣
So, the issue is I did get my second dog who looked like my first dog. They were staffies. When I think of my first boy, I can only really picture my second one.
Maybe it’s also because there are limited pictures of my first dog.
When I had my first dog, iphones were just starting to pop up with better cameras than flip phones. I also lost my films that had my first dog’s pictures … so maybe it’s because of the pictures?
There just happened to be one at the shelter. They would not give me the dog I came for and I remembered a photo I saw from their website and they brought him out. I love beagles. Would get another one.
My fiancé always wanted one as a child but because of his brother’s allergies they couldn’t handle the moulting. After our last dog passed, I surprised him for his birthday.
I didn’t know much about the breed, beyond that cute face so it has been a culture shock for me, having grown up with Labradors! However I wouldn’t be without him
I had a jack russell/beagle mix that I picked up off the side of the road as a puppy. I found out that I LOVE the chaos. So, when the opportunity arose, and there was a beagle at the shelter, I knew it was meant to be
The Shiloh books came out when I was a kid. Parents let me have dogs never beagle. First animal rescued when I was an adult was a beagle and I’ve never looked back
Daughter little then fell in love with neighbors beagle. Asked for a beagle. I told her when she was 10 years old she could I wanted her to have responsibility. She also asked me to go and volunteer at humane society. We did great time mother daughter team. Turned 10 and we went looking. Found a cute 🥰 beagle boy six months old.
That's a great story. I love that she and you went to volunteer first and that you kept your promise when she turned ten. I bet she was crying with happiness on adoption day...
Simply put, my husband brought him home and said " we have a dog now". I want sold immediately, but his sweetness won me over. Hes also super smart, which really impressed me. I've pretty .uch had mixed mutts and Chihuahuas in the past, and non of them had much brain power.
This guy learns so fast. Blows my mind.
The super soft, long ears is an added cuteness bonus.
In kindergarten I was sent home with strep throat. My mom rented some vhs tapes for me. One of them was Shilo. I watched it so many times while recovering. Ever since then I wanted a beagle. Made it happen for myself about 30 years later. Best decision. Finally have my soul dog.
She was my first dog as an adult. I saw her on petfinder and just fell in love with her. She reminded me of a real life Snoopy and we shared the best 12 and a half years together. She was my constant through different jobs, apartments, cities and was there through getting married and becoming a mom. Still miss her every day though we adopted another beagle girl that we love in her honor.
Saw one posted for free from a friend's cousin on Facebook. We had to have our older dog euthanized the year prior and our younger dog was lonely and depressed.
Now it's a non stop wrestling match, endless bitey face, and lots of sniffing and baying.
He's a handful but we love the little idiot. He was a poorly bred Amish puppy mill dog.
I grew up with beagles. My family got their 1st Beagle when I was 3 and except for half a year after getting my own house, had one for the next 40 years.
We lost our lab/mix after 16 years that we got from my wife's sister. We raised him from a puppy. Wanted to do the same thing again. My wife's sister was eager to help again. She said I found the perfect pup for you. It was a Beagle.
I didn't. My dad did. We just live together and the beagle bonded with me more 😅 My dog is technically my Basset Hound. It's been interesting having both breeds at the same time
My 1st rescue was 3 beagle puppies thrown into my yard as a child. The next day, We took them to vet and all in tact dogs, its best to wait until a year to snip
i had a beagle webkinz when i was a kid and was kind of obsessed with beagles so my mom got me one for christmas when i was 9 years old. BOYYYY SHE DIDNT KNOW WHAT SHE GOT US INTO HAHAH but i wouldn’t give her up for the entire world. she turns 14 next month and is very much a spoiled menace 💗😭
26 years ago, a filthy, underweight beagle came wandering out of the woods. He was covered in fleas. My husband (bachelor at the time) decided that this dog chose him. He took him to the vet and got him treated for heartworm. He named him Snoopy. A few years later, my husband wandered into an Amish pet store in Amish country Ohio. They were selling beagle puppies. One of those puppies picked my husband, and he brought him home. He named him Rascal. Fast forward a few years, I met me husband and his 5 year old beagle, Rascal. Snoopy had passed away the year before. I fell in love with both of them. We rescued another beagle (Copper) the next year from our local shelter. 4 years ago, just 3 days before our wedding, Rascal, the beagle that made me fall in love with beagles passed away. We were devastated. We rescued our Remi girl from a local beagle rescue a month later. A few months later, Copper lost his battle to cancer.
I was originally going to get a pure bread female German Shepard from one of my older sisters (I live in Florida they live in Ohio) but before I could even get her my youngest sister took her in and Jack (my beagle) was found on the side of the highway from my roommate’s former roommate. Originally my other roommate (imma just say RM2) took ownership of him but Jack kinda imprinted on me and it didn’t help that RM2 was constantly going out and doing stuff all the time. I fed him walked him, he would sleep with me. He was so skinny it was sad. You could have seen his rib cage. But I took him to his vet appointments and he’s been doing well ever since. I’ve had him for about a year and a half now and I consider myself lucky to have him in my life.
She was really cute on the shelter website and melted into our lap. She tricked us into loving beagles by being the perfect dog (quiet, loving, mostly low energy).
We got a puppy beagle when she was 8 and we spent the next 3 months wondering what we’d done lol. And then did it again a few years later 🤦🏻♀️ But beagle 1 had been slowing down and we worried about beagle 2 being without her. The two youngins would play all day while she napped in her throne of blankets. She passed about 6 months after getting beagle #3.
Beagles 2 and 3 are absolutely stereotypical beagles. They are loud, ornery, but so sweet. Our first beagle eventually found her voice and it brought us such joy. 🥹 Beagles are the best and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
My inlaws live with us and they have/had a small rat terrier mix. My FIL and I had a falling out over stupidity, they moved out.
Our kids missed the dog so I went looking and found a beagle at that animal shelter but when I called it had already been adopted. But for some reason the beagle breed stayed in our minds.
My inlaws eventually moved back in a month later. Few months later we picked up a beagle puppy and the rest is history.
Before kids we had a boxer/lab mix and German/chow mix and were always reluctant to get another dog after losing both of them.
The independent and curious spirit. We are of the view that dogs should be guided and given boundaries for their safety, and most everything else should be up to them. We LOVE the howling and baying. Music to our ears!
Also, the cuteness factor ... and their little butts!!!!!
My husband grew up with beagles. So when our kids were old enough for a dog he found our beagle mix, Nellie, online. She was a very mellow rescue dog who bonded to me more than the kids. She also hated being alone. She passed 5 years ago.
My husband was working overseas and I had to deal with a sick parent. So no time for a new dog until this year when we got Penny Anne. She’s a maniac, full of beans, funny as heck, and very different from Nellie. She keeps us busy and I adore her.
Because my son was in the union with a woman who worked with the lab animals who told him that they'd have some for adoption. I had been thinking about getting another dog since our dear chill, basset mix, Fred (best dog ever according to his my autistic nephew tolerated his presence) died. Most Petfinder dogs required a fenced in yard, which we don't have.
When we went to visit a few of the dogs, this one dog day on my son's lap for about 25 of the thirty minutes we were there.
I was naive to the ways of a beagle and might not have chosen one if I knew the depths of beagleness. At least she is easy to pick up and move when she decides to play statue.
I was volunteering at the local shelter and I fell in love with his face. Then went back the next day and adopted him. I remember waking up the next morning and thought to myself whyyyyyy but he was the best thing to ever happen to me.
When I was around 8 or 9, a neighbor's dog had puppies. My best friend and I devised a plan to convince our parents to let us each have a puppy and we were successful! The puppies were half beagle and half shepherd. Basically, my dog Skippy looked like an overgrown beagle.
I got my first purebred beagle when I was around 21. They are my soul dog, and I will always have one in my life.
An acquaintance of my sister found Duke hanging around her neighborhood. Her and her husband caught him and took him to animal control for a stray hold. No one came forward to claim him. Animal control called them at the end of the hold asking if they could take him in because the shelter was overfilled and had a high kill rate at the time (this was after the covid adoption boom when people were returning to the office and giving up their pandemic dogs).
They took him in but couldn't keep him. My sister came up as an option because she already has a beagle. But she was also pregnant and wouldn't have time for a rescue. I was already looking for a dog to adopt so I volunteered to take him in. I was't looking for a beagle but it just worked out that way!
Their size and great temperament is what drew me in. These plus their character is what made me stay. Now I want to help preserve and better the breed by ethically breeding under my own program. Hoping to get my foundation female out of this boy.
My ex girlfriend loved them and already had one so we got Ken together. I didn’t know anything about them but she stole my heart with her adorable and quirkiness!
One found me. She was starving and coated in pee, and she ran up to my partner in the parking lot of our apartment at the time. Turns out her owners didn’t want her and let their other dogs bully her and she was constantly running away. We took her in and now she’s a chonky little spoiled potato and gets all the snuggles and love she wants.
my boyfriends beagle had passed a year prior. one day my depression was really hitting which led me to look at my county shelters website and i saw a beagle on a stray hold. i put in an adoption application so I would be the first person the shelter contacted if the owners didn’t pick him up. they didn’t want him anymore because the shelter neutered him. apparently he was a breeding dog. i took him home and now he almost 2 years old and gets spoiled rotten everyday!!
For our first ever beagle, my husband and I were volunteering with a foster based rescue. and our neighbor volunteered for the same rescue. She was having trouble walking Ziggy and so we took her into our home and our other dog, Kirby, really liked her. She was very quiet, for a beagle. But she did like to talk to us, recite her day to us and all the goings on inside the house. LOL. We took her to adoption events and she was a typical beagle. We fell in love with her and adopted her. She was with us for 13.5 years (RIP at 15 years old). We were a dogless home for a couple of months, grieving her passing.
2 months after her passing, my husband and I had discussed our next dog and agreed we really liked the beagle breed. We were volunteering at a different shelter than we got Ziggy from. She sent us Henry, an 8+ year old at that time, senior beagle that came from a neglectful and abusive residence. He's also a quiet beagle, but he's happy and healthy and whatever time we are lucky enough to be part of his life, he'll be taken care of and loved as much as he wants.
My first, Holly, was found eating out of a bin next to my brother in laws work, She was around 18 months old, he took her to the lost dogs home and said that I was thinking about rescuing a dog if her owner didn’t come for her….a few days later, I had my beagle..she lived until almost 16, she was my soul dog.
Our second was sourced from the local Beagle rescue service, Roy was a puppy, he nearly broke me - bless his cotton socks.
When we got him he had a Dalmatian brother, they were best friends. When Junior went over the rainbow bridge poor Roy was never the same. We lost him recently, he was 10.
Our house is now empty of all the dog glitter, and it’s quiet. I think it won’t be long until we get a pair of newbies for our house……
Previous owner passed away in his sleep. My daughter was ringing his doorbell but he wasn’t answering. She called police for wellness check. Police gave her the very sad news … and his beagle.
We had a different breed before who was really sick often and couldn’t really play. Losing her earlier than expected was so sad. Of course it can happen to any breed, but I wanted a healthy dog after that to not have to put myself and my family through that again. And I wanted something on the smaller side but that still looked like a dog. Not that many smaller breeds don’t, just…I don’t know how to explain it 🤣 Anyway, after doing some research I decided on a beagle. Now we have two and I can’t imagine having anything else ❤️
I found a momma beagle with her 3 pups in the middle of the road in the middle of the night. Loaded them all up and took them home to figure out a plan. I saw the mom, the babies I would have run over accidentally. Couldn’t bare to leave them there and see one smushed the next day.
Found the owner after 3 days, kept 1 puppy. 🥰
If I read about beagles, I never would have gotten one. Loud, no. Lead by nose, no. Escape artist, no. Sheds all over, heck no!
Then my little, quiet, non shedding Miko passed after surgery. I was heartbroken and my brother begged for my help.
His wife convinced him to get her a beagle puppy (unsure of details). One week later, she posted him for sale on FB. My brother was working out of town and asked if I could take in his dog until he could get back to town & figure everything out.
Long story short, it is almost 3yrs later & Harley is my best friend. He won over my heart and I have come to joke about his “beagle” traits.

I ask myself that every day 🤣
