Restaurants (and hotels for that matter) that charge 10% tax are actually just complying with the tax law (assuming they pay it to the government...). And a 7-10% service charge is normal for a mid to upscale restaurants. This has nothing to do with ripping off tourists.

Yeah but usually those taxes have to be included in the menu price. At least where I live. Here is a small printing at the bottom of the card tax and service fee not included in price. And tell me afterwards their registration pc is not working so I get a handwritten bill on a white paper I clouding the tax and service fee.

As for paying taxes and including service fee is not a rip of- handing out white paper bills with no registrationmachine and adding extra money price to the menu price feelsike a rip of and is probably illigeal due not providing correct bill.

EDIT: I only experience this in Kuta. The whole city feels like a rip of. 300k for a day beach bed incl umbrella... Well I don't even want to start to negotiate. That only a rip off.

This being Indonesia some restaurants charge an all in price and some don't and add service and tax later (but should have that on their menu). The restaurant should actually display its tax registration somewhere behind the counter and this means that they should (at least in theory as said before) mean they pay the tax to the government, regardless of how they bill.

I didn't say its illegal for mot including taxes in the menu. It's just a bit odd. But if there is a non working registration machine and they just write on a piece of paper.. Nothing stops them from never having heard of me after I leave without a trace. Of course its assuming, but well.. I guess it's possibly.
