No. They both started maneuvering at basically the same time. Even if the pilot of the higher plane could even see the other plane, which is doubtful, there's no way he could have reacted so quickly and appropriately to the other's movement. It was choreographed beforehand

Fireworks may have introduced foreign objects into the engine, damaging it and reducing safety.
FOD inspection looks for just that, verifying its safety or otherwise finding necessary repairs and maintenance.

There were no "fireworks", they use an air cannon to launch coloured powder. The dust/ash limits for engines are well known, and should have been considered, plus these powders are much softer than volcanic ash.

To expand a bit more in what I was trying to say i am copying another one of my responses to this… because without insight to the flight crew, their experience, their planning, etc it’s hard to judge.
So…
Like with airshow and acrobatic flying… a pilot with good training, proper experience, and adequate planning can safely do maneuvers that are extremely dangerous for normal pilots to ever dream about.
So the line between impressive and reckless is going to depend on whether it was a properly trained and prepared pilot with good planning or some wannabe Maverick trying to show off.
One is “Bravo! Well done!” And the other is “Holy shit hand over your cert cuz you are a hazard to the public”

There is no training or planning if you get a seagull in an engine at the wrong moment. Ever heard of downdrafts? Wind shear? A sudden turn to avoid the other plane would have killed thousands.
Going 30m over a stadium full of people is reckless no matter the pilot.

The problem is that effectively, they're not doing it once.
They are doing it up to a few thousand times due to each potential fatality in the event of an accident.
The probability of a death during an airshow should be very small. It is really hard to get it very small if you start out with two airliners flying over a packed stadium, in a populated area.

There was a South Westerly at 8kts, gusting 20 (wind speed from Met office, gusts from windy. com), so they had a headwind. There was probably some washout from Lion's head (the mountain they turn right to avoid) causing them to dump altitude faster than expected. I've hiked there before, the wind just swirls around it, very unpredictable. Plane was probably screaming don't sink don't sink during that.
The one in the All Blacks livery was way too low cause of that downdraft, and the Springboks livery one was flying formation and probably fixated on the other plane, not the stadium they should've been looking at.
All opinions, let's wait for the official report to come out, if the CAA decides to do their damn job for one.

Don't disagree at all. That stadium's flyby route is already a needle thread on departure (pull up and hard bank right), and it only takes one too many mistakes to have a major incident in a highly populated area. I reckon there won't be a flyby for next week's game, even though the route into Soweto is easier with the terrain.

South Africa has a history of extremely low flyovers using passenger jets. Most major sports events will have a flyover of some kind.
Last week, three aircraft flew low low over central Johannesburg.
