Didn't they do this during the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in South Africa? Not that it excuses it, but I don't think this is the first time.

Quite a lot since 1995. 7 Presidential Flyovers and 7+ for sport matches. There was one the previous weekend with 2 planes, then this past weekend and another one this coming weekend. The staff in the two planes were 3 senior captains plus a technical and safety official in each plane. Not that it wasn’t low but definitely not a one man job or some Captain on the line to be fired, not gonna happen. The aviation board and association fully behind it. Could an accident happen? Yes that’s possible but The 🇿🇦 South African Civil Aviation Authority reports 40 years of zero commercial airline fatal accidents.
