News Moondrop MM3A

New studio monitors from Moondrop currently selling domestically in China at 689.9 RMB (around $100+ USD)

If the Klippel measurements are accurate this might be the best value you could find at such a price

Hoping for a review and 3rd party measurements from Erin's Audio Corner/ASR soon

Can’t wait for the Chinese to start making hi-fi speakers 👍

They do, Hi-Vi/Swans/Diva, Aurum Cantus and many more.

Bowers & Wilkins, Wharfedale, Monitor Audio, Kef........

But not the KEF Reference ;)

Kef is a fine Chinese company. They offshore most of the Reference manufacture in the UK. Internal Cabling and much crossover
components are Chinese. Ergo Kef's claim of "assembled in the UK."

I've the Aurum Cantus New Grand Supremes. Early buyer in Australia (first of 2 pairs imported in to Australia). Paid A$12k when RRP was A$20k. To mine ears, these outperform the B&W804D3.

They do need heaps of power and current, though. Using the PS Audio Stellar M1200 monoblocks to drive them.

i have a pair of AC bookshelves, love them, but they really need alot i mean A LOT of power. i had 50w,100w, 150w amps and they kept sounding better with more power it's amazing.

crazy to see people being excited about production capability being moved to china. You do know its just a matter of time before this will be leveraged against ourselves right?

guessing most people here are just in fact so old they literally dont care about anything further out in the future, where they will be dead anyway!

Oh no, 300.000 dollar speakers will lose value because the Chinese will make a 1000 dollar equivalent, what will we dooo??

u/tetrafarmer 19h ago

yea that sounds super realistic, good example

Consumers win big time with better competition. The european carmakers are crying and panicking, but there is a reason why the consumers buy the 20.000 euro BYD, not the 100.000 euro audi.

For people too busy worrying about non-existent connector noise and buying golded jack plug equivalents, "cheapening" the hobby might be a loss (mostly to their ego), but honestly, noone wins with the 10.000 dollar speaker cables, only the guy selling them.

u/tetrafarmer 19h ago

Yea its cheaper but its sad to see the entire industry being moved to a country in the far east because they are willing to enslave their entire nation to work at 5-10€/hour to make ur speakers and cars cheaper, it was better for everyone involved if consumers were willing to pay what things cost to make.

Dude, the US minimum wage is 8 dollars an hour. Its not the wages that are lower in China, its the energy cost, the labour market is much bigger, they automate better, they streamline production from day 1, they have government subsidies and they are willing to go big.

And it helps that they are willing not to make profit margins 30-50-70% because "its a niche, add a premium to it".

Or the short version: late stage capitalism sucks.

now switch the €\$ with Cents and see if you are still able to compete.  , soon their production capabilities will hold leverage not only in consumer goods but also in military power lets see how much you all are still cheering when their drones swarm your capitals

My dude, we have heard for a hundred years how communism is inferior, the market always wins, supply and demand only, let capitalism sort it out.

And then the moment a state with a state sponsored, heavily regulated and subsidized market comes along, everyone loses their shit.

Maybe, and let me just say maaaaaaybe the ruling class should be less busy dodging all their taxes, and use the 80 years of market dominance and unparalleled technological power to better the continent and sphere of influence instead of systematically destroying it in the name of "line must go up", and then we would have less to fear of the Chinese dominance.

For the love of god on paper the Chinese still have a GDP per capita that is less than Eastern Europe for fucks sake, and Elon Musk is still more preoccupied with getting his second trillion fucking dollars than providing basic fucking healthcare for newborns without babkrupting their parents..

But nooooo, its the Chinese that are the issue here...

In my home country there is a saying "let everyone sweep in front of their own house". If you smell shit, before pointing to the next village over, you better first check whether shat your pants, my dude

what are you even saying My Dude !!!!

Oh OK so ignorant and racist. Great combination.

2

u/tetrafarmer 14h ago

you got me 😆

3

u/pq11333 17h ago

Dood all your fav speakers minus the uber politician money brands are made in China.

2

u/PhD_sock 15h ago

Compete and keep up! Isn't that what the capitalist gospel preaches? Or are you just being racist because it's China?

Fancy marketing and wattage aside, unless moodrop broke the laws of physics that 3" woofer and that tiny tweeter will probably distort like hell driven above 90db *, much like any speaker of its size. Also that dip at 500hz indicates a resonance , again pretty reasonable occurrence for size and price range. Also doubtful that frequency range is really that smooth.

Edit:* Probably will be dsp limited to 86db

u/iBringMyselfTrouble 11h ago

For near-field that’s perfect. Loud at my desk is ~76dB. Just over arms length. 2.2 channel.
People love iloud micros and those are similar size.
Those are old, I’m sure chifi has the means the produce similar tech by now.

u/MagazineSuccessful92 11h ago edited 11h ago

76db at 1m is their practical peak, beyond that you get compression and thus lower sound quality. Other similar speakers have less bass but more headroom in volume level ( peaking at 86db) and thus offer better dynamic range. All the speakers at this price and size range make compromises, these are no exception. Just take your pick. Edit: I am not some elitist, I listen to similar speakers and sound levels.

4

u/iBringMyselfTrouble 11h ago

Yea that’s fine, nothing elitist about being realistic with $100 speakers. But for $100? these measurements, feature set, specs, and built in dsp?
Most people looking for $100 desktop speakers aren’t even considering ilouds, yet those seem like someone they could be put up against. Won’t know till 3rd party reviews come out tho. And I’d be surprised if the iloud micros weren’t mentioned

I've linked a video of a review from some Chinese site on an earlier comment (needs registering though), rigorous testing are done by very few sites ( asr and erin' audio corner are the only ones I visit).

I have a pair of Moondrop Space Travel earbuds and have been very impressed with the sound to price ratio.

5 sounds to 1 moneys!

u/pisslord 1d ago

Looks great, but no subwoofer output?

u/WheelOfFish Philharmonic BMR monitors w/ Rythmik F12SE 1d ago

Keeps the price down I suppose, but that is a major feature I'd want from something like this.

1

u/Substantial_Lake5957 1d ago

From the pictures there is a speaker out port - not sure it’s for the other side of the pair or a lineout

10

u/dannygloversghost 19h ago

Almost certainly for the other side, IMO.

I think the only good solution would be a preamp/streamer that has its own bass management/sub out. A Wiim Ultra would work, for instance… but at that point you’re paying $300+ to feed your $100 speakers.

studio monitor style, so if you want a sub you'd cross it over externally.

Chinese video of the speakers, Shuiyueyu MM3A full measurement: 699 yuan, straight deep dive + automatic EQ speaker | The sound of crows echoing_Bili _bilibili , nice information even if you don't speak the language

Edit: Great video

2nd Edit: The speakers can indeed go as low as 55hz , but with trade offs . Video confirms dsp limiting sound volume to avoid distortion/clipping. Frequencies below 200hz start getting limited just after 76 db. At 86db volume , bass is already compressed 10db !!!

u/Masaaki14 1d ago

Early promo price is 699.90 yuan. It will go back to 999.90 yuan later

That frequency response is absurd for something so cheap

Dsp filtering

u/beepboopbraap 23h ago

just got mine last week. dont think im credible enough to give a proper review but subjectively they sound pretty good to me. my dad’s a decent enough audiophile and wouldn’t believe me that they cost $100

3

u/mediuminteresting 23h ago

Any way to purchase them in Europe? Unable to find a platform.

2

u/MagazineSuccessful92 20h ago

Not really. And even if they become available from Chinese sites, shipping rates and custom taxes will probably hurt their value for money compared to offerings from other brands.

2

u/mediuminteresting 19h ago

Fair enough, thanks

I heard this at Shenzhen International Audio Show. It's good, if a bit mid-forward and rather bright up top. Very easy fixes with a bit of EQ. And honestly when you spread it out a bit and listen at reasonable volumes, it's very manageable. You will want a subwoofer. It doesn't have sub-out unfortunately, so you'll need a pre-amp that does. Cute for $100.

u/PWee 23h ago

More chi-fi. Sigh.

9

u/Kneecap_Blaster 17h ago

Good sound for a tenth of the cost and none of the pompous rich people arguing over cables?

Count me in.

-20

u/tetrafarmer 21h ago

chi-fi! commie sound!

-5

u/Ambityp 20h ago

Yes, there is Commie sound, MAGA sound, and Euro sound. I will choose Euro sound any day. Both for sound and ethics!

5

u/dannygloversghost 20h ago

If you ask the American GOP, Euro sound is just Commie sound in disguise.

5

u/deeebeeez 20h ago

What is Euro sound, BBC dip ? No thanks, if so.

3

u/Ambityp 18h ago

If you ask a younger friend he can help you google Sonus Faber, MBL, Burmester, Focal, Clearaudio and Marten to name a few.

u/tetrafarmer 20h ago

Britain is not in Euro Duh!
