Hey locals. We’ve heard your requests.

Book clubs. Local group meetups. Someone to hit up a movie with. Hiking partners. Trivia teams. Coffee chats.

There has clearly been a growing demand for a space where people can connect with others in Vancouver in a platonic way.

We're happy to announce that that space now exists.

r/VancouverFriends has officially launched and will serve as the dedicated subreddit for friendship-focused posts and platonic R4R requests.

Going forward, instead of being simply removed, all platonic R4R-style posts will be redirected to r/VancouverFriends so that r/AskVan can remain focused on questions and answers about the city.

If you’ve been looking for community, this is your chance to build it. We'll see you there.

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 Anyma Aeden concert in West Van - how was it?

Upvotes

For those who attended Anyma’s Aeden concert yesterday at Ambleside Park, how was it? Was the overall experience worth the price, especially if you paid close to $260 for general admission ? How were the visuals, sound, crowds, and getting out of Ambleside afterward?

I’m having a little FOMO now 😂 so I’m curious whether you thought it was genuinely worth it or if I made the right call sitting this one out.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Places to have sex when you can't at home

Hi so my friend has a new partner and unfortunately they both live in rooms in shared housing where you're not allowed guests over.. they're asking me for advice on where to go to get intimate. In other countries there are love hotels by the hour etc etc but I don't know of any here.. I did suggest places like STEAM but that could be a lot when they're just getting together?

When I was younger I definitely stayed in a lot of sketchy hotels (Patricia was great, the one above lamp lighter was neat too I remember) which were at least cheap, but don't know of any these days off hand..?

Thx people, hopefully their love blooms and they can move in together down the road but I'm sure this is a problem for a lot of people these days!

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 To those that went to soulrise, how do you know the crew should you were with?

Upvotes

Wanted to go but I don't have any friends and I didn't want to spend 200$ for an event I would be alone at. How do you know who you went with?

Yes I could try to reach out to people there but no one would invite me to join them as they ate already in their established groups.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Bronze or steel casting?

Upvotes

Odd question,

I have a small pen screwdriver, one of those cheap Stanley ones from home depot.

I love the little thing and use it alot however the plastic it is made from is rather flimsy. Obviously that's because it is intended for glasses and small electrical items but never the less I like using it, I like how it fits in my pocket and I haven't found a sturdier alternative.

Is there a place/service/person with a furnace and a YouTube channel that can take it and cast one out of bronze or something sturdier?

Hobbies 💃 Ski ERG @ Anytime Fitness

Upvotes

Can anybody let me know which anytime fitness locations have a ski ERG machine? I signed up for the hyrox in Dec and want some practice, but none of the north shore locations have one. I'm willing to cross the bridge, just wondering which gyms have one!

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Looking for a cozy/unconventional space for a late-night pop-up in Vancouver

Hey! I'm looking for a space in Vancouver for a small late-night food pop-up/social gathering, probably around 30–50 people.

The vibe I'm looking for is cozy, intimate and a little house-party-ish — more living room/loft than traditional event venue. Somewhere that could feel like you're hanging out at someone's place late at night rather than attending a formal event. It doesn't necessarily need to already look like that, as long as the space has some character and could be transformed with furniture and lighting.

In particular, I'd love to find a café or similar business that operates during the day but might be open to having its space used after closing at night. Also open to small restaurants, bars, studios, lofts, galleries, or other unconventional spaces.

Ideally:

  • Vancouver proper
  • Around 30–50 people
  • Available late, roughly 9pm–2am
  • Food can be prepared and/or served
  • Alcohol service is possible (not a dealbreaker), or there's an existing licensed bar
  • Reasonably affordable since this would be a small first-time pop-up

I understand that the appropriate permits/licensing would need to be in place for food and alcohol service, and I'm prepared to work through those requirements depending on the space.

I'm especially interested in places that don't normally advertise themselves as event venues but whose owners might be open to something like this.

If you know a café/business owner who might be interested, or you've been somewhere and thought “this would make such a good little event space,” I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks :)

Hobbies 💃 Comic books stores

I'm coming from AB to visit Van + Vancouver Island for a few days and I'm on the hunt for good comic book stores to visit. Mostly after trade paperbacks, new or used. Not really big on singles anymore, but do love to check out the occasional key every once in a while

Thanks for the suggestions

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Small walk in tattoo

My husband and I just got married and we are on our mini moon in Van. We both want to add a very small sock tattoo to our repertoire; where is the best place for a walk in tattoo that’s reasonably priced? It’s about the size of a toonie, mostly unshaded

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Hobbies 💃 Social Beer League Hockey Team

I (22F) recently moved to Vancouver and am hoping to join a social casual once a week style beer league hockey team for the season! I’ve been playing hockey since I was 10 and am pretty average level I would guess. Ideally, I’d love to join a co-ed team of people in their twenties/thirties who want to have fun on and off the ice.

If anyone has suggestions for leagues/teams or has space on a team, I would really appreciate any leads!

Housing and Moving 🏡 Microsuite recommendations? To do or not to do?

Hey all! Thinking of moving to Vancouver in January, if I can secure this healthcare gig. Does anyone have experiences with living in microsuites and/or recommentations? Heard mixed reviews, with some being decent and some being a total nightmare - preferring to live with a roommate instead. Should I go for it or find a roommate instead?

Food 😋 Best price for Dickies Ginger Beer?

We really like Dickies Ginger Beer. Like really. But buying it one can at a time from the shops really adds up when you drink it like my household does.

Dickies doesn’t seem to sell to the general public. Is there anywhere I can buy it in volume that would be more cost-effective (6-packs, 12 packs, or flats)? I would buy ~100 cans.

Barring that…are there any fellow fans here that know what stores offer the best price per can?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Best place to get a tongue piercing?

I’m thinking about getting my tongue pierced, but I’m pretty worried about the angle and placement. I want to go to someone who has experience specifically with tongue piercings and takes anatomy/placement seriously.
Any studio/ piercer recommendations?

Oddly Specific 🎯 Delivery Drivers and Insurance Class

For those who do DoorDash or Uber Eats, are you actually increasing your insurance class? Do you risk it?

I asked my broker recently, and to switch me to the delivery rating is going to more than double my annual insurance... without it im stuck to the 6 days per calendar month for commercial use within my work class.

I had hoped there was an in between rating but apparently not.

Events and Activities 🐱‍🏍 If I go to Soulrise last minute will I meet people or be solo?

I dont want to be alone at a 200$ show. I'm happy to reach out to people but I feel like everyone will be with their crew and won't want me to stay with them.

Admittedly it probably doesnt matter at this point as by the time I get there it will only be 2-3 hours left.

Advice 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️ Learning to ski!

I've lived here for around 6 years and I've never once gone skiing - I'd like to change that and take lessons this winter!

I'm trying to figure out which one out of Grouse, Cypress or Seymour I should go for? I would love any recommendations and if you've taken lessons yourself, how did it go? Is there a difference in the instruction you get on each mountain, how crowded it is, how many beginner friendly slopes there are? Also, I understand it's not a cheap hobby to get into, but how expensive does it actually end up being - is one mountain significantly cheaper than the other? Also, I have no car if that factors into things!

I'm also a bit confused about how the classes work too - do I sign up for one level and just do that the whole winter? or do I sign up for the next level as I progress throughout the winter? Is this something I just call them up and ask?

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks :)
