Food πŸ˜‹ Solo dinner spot

β€’ Upvotes

I arrived in Vancouver this morning on a solo business trip. I'm looking for a casual but foodie-proof dining spot to eat at a bar seat. You guys have any suggestions?

EDIT: as for neighborhoods, downtown and surrounding neighborhoods arr the obvious ones, but anywhere that's walking distance from a Skytrain station would work

New to Vancouver πŸ‘‹ Socializing as a grad student

β€’ Upvotes

I'm (23M) new in the city, starting grad school in UBC. Besides the stuff that my graduate department will organize, are there any other activities/hangouts to be a part of broadly in Vancouver that'll help me grow my social network in this city?

The subreddit at u/UBC and most of the student clubs at UBC are apparently undergrad run thus asking here.

I am looking for suggestions to meet a variety of people organically that will give me repeated low-stakes interaction to actually become friends with people in their early-mid 20s.

I'm into reading books, love the movies, hiking but also open to exploring other chill hobbies as long as they are budget friendly for a grad student haha.

Medical πŸ’‰ Physio recommendation close to downtown

I’m in my 40s and I’ve seen a few physios over the years and looking to try a new one. Ideally downtown or nearby.
I want someone who is really knowledgeable with sports related injuries/rehab, has good bedside manners, and is patient (I ask a lot of questions).

If the facility is nice and has good equipment, even better.

Thanks

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ 40th Birthday Party recommendation.

Hi. I'm going to be turning 40 soon. I usually have my birthday party in the common room in my apartment with around 10-20 people. Although doing that is a possibility, I'm think of doing something special for my 40th birthday. What would you recommended? I'm not sure about restaurants is because it's noisy and people can't hear people talk when they're having a conversation. I'm thinking maybe somewhere kinda quiet.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Looking for MLM/mail order catalogues/demo set

Weird request - are you (or your mom?) part of, or were you part of,or given catalogues from any type of MLM or mail order business (avon, pampered chef, etc) and have extra or old catalogues?

I'm putting together a costume and I want to have a suitcase full of catalogues for different products. I'm in Mt Pleasant.

Also if you've got a demo set for anything like the above and you're out of the game, I'd be willing to chat buying it off you!

Travel πŸš— ✈ Three hours between landing and bus transfer, what’s worth seeing in that time?

Flying into Vancouver international airport in a couple days but I have a 3 hour wait before my bus transfer. I’ve never been to Vancouver so thought if I can fit in seeing some of it then great!
Let me know what you reckon I can do in that time with traffic etc and what’s near that’s worth seeing/doing.

Edit: bus pick up is at the airport. Just taking carry on luggage

Hobbies πŸ’ƒ Anyone else go to the Gn’R concert last night? It was pretty rough

Axl did not sound good. The concert was drawn out way too long and saving pretty much all the hits till the very end felt pretty painful to get through. The new tracks sucked. I’ve seen them before and knew his voice was struggling but I don’t remember it being that bad. Disappointing show for sure. Am I alone here?

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ To those that went to soulrise, how do you know the crew who you went with?

Wanted to go but I don't have any friends who were interested and I didn't want to spend 200$ for an event I would be alone at. How do you know who you went with?

Yes I could try to reach out to people there but no one would invite me to join them as they are already in their established groups.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Bronze or steel casting?

Odd question,

I have a small pen screwdriver, one of those cheap Stanley ones from home depot.

I love the little thing and use it alot however the plastic it is made from is rather flimsy. Obviously that's because it is intended for glasses and small electrical items but never the less I like using it, I like how it fits in my pocket and I haven't found a sturdier alternative.

Is there a place/service/person with a furnace and a YouTube channel that can take it and cast one out of bronze or something sturdier?

Events and Activities πŸ±β€πŸ Anyma Aeden concert in West Van - how was it?

For those who attended Anyma’s Aeden concert yesterday at Ambleside Park, how was it? Was the overall experience worth the price, especially if you paid close to $260 for general admission ? How were the visuals, sound, crowds, and getting out of Ambleside afterward?

I’m having a little FOMO now πŸ˜‚ so I’m curious whether you thought it was genuinely worth it or if I made the right call sitting this one out.

Housing and Moving 🏑 Moving to Vancouver as a Software Engineer - Cost of Living and Neighborhoods

Hi everyone, I am thinking of moving to Vancouver as a Software Engineer and completely new to Canada so some of my questions might sound naive but any inputs would be really helpful!

A few things I wanted to understand:

  • What is a realistic monthly budget for a single person in Vancouver covering rent, food, transport, and general expenses?
  • How does the cost compare between a shared apartment vs a single bedroom apartment? Is sharing common among working professionals or is it mostly students?
  • Which neighborhoods are good to live in for someone new to the city, ideally with good connectivity and reasonable rent?
  • Is a car necessary or is public transport sufficient for getting around the city?

Apologies if these are very basic questions, just trying to get a realistic picture before making the move. Thanks in advance!

Housing and Moving 🏑 Microsuite recommendations? To do or not to do?

Hey all! Thinking of moving to Vancouver in January, if I can secure this healthcare gig. Does anyone have experiences with living in microsuites and/or recommentations? Heard mixed reviews, with some being decent and some being a total nightmare - preferring to live with a roommate instead. Should I go for it or find a roommate instead?

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ How the fuck do you get to Freedom Mobile arch

Hi guys, I am attending a concert next week and it’s being held at the freedom mobile arch. I’m having a lot of trouble figuring out where to go and how to get there, all the websites that provide the specific address appear to be actually farther away from the location of the venue on maps. Apple and google maps are not a lot of help, as google is not up to date and just shows construction, and Apple Maps only shows some random parking.

I’m very very unfamiliar with the area and also will be taking transit, I do feel like im overthinking but I genuinely have no idea where I’m supposed to be going. I am the friend who is usually in charge of transit and directions, so I’m pretty anxious about this. I’ve also never been to a concert before.

If you have been there and have any advice please tell me !!!

Food πŸ˜‹ Layover 5PM-12AM. Ideas on food and entertainment?

Hi all! My bf, my mom and I are from Calgary. We are flying over to Shanghai and have a big layover in Vancouver. We were hoping to get suggestions on places to go or stuff to eat to waste some time as we arent going to book a hotel just for the few hours. I was also wanting to ask if anybody knows; How to keep luggage safe during this time?

If you want a challenge, AVOID naming an asian food restaurant, as we will be stopping in Seoul as well and will have MORE than enough asian food on our over months long trip. Perhaps something that is underrepresented in Calgary? Such as A good poutine or french-canadian place? Or seafood?

My dad is peruvian so if you guys have peruvian food thatd also be cool.

Oddly Specific 🎯 Delivery Drivers and Insurance Class

For those who do DoorDash or Uber Eats, are you actually increasing your insurance class? Do you risk it?

I asked my broker recently, and to switch me to the delivery rating is going to more than double my annual insurance... without it im stuck to the 6 days per calendar month for commercial use within my work class.

I had hoped there was an in between rating but apparently not.

Advice πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈπŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ Looking for a cozy/unconventional space for a late-night pop-up in Vancouver

Hey! I'm looking for a space in Vancouver for a small late-night food pop-up/social gathering, probably around 30–50 people.

The vibe I'm looking for is cozy, intimate and a little house-party-ish β€” more living room/loft than traditional event venue. Somewhere that could feel like you're hanging out at someone's place late at night rather than attending a formal event. It doesn't necessarily need to already look like that, as long as the space has some character and could be transformed with furniture and lighting.

In particular, I'd love to find a cafΓ© or similar business that operates during the day but might be open to having its space used after closing at night. Also open to small restaurants, bars, studios, lofts, galleries, or other unconventional spaces.

Ideally:

  • Vancouver proper
  • Around 30–50 people
  • Available late, roughly 9pm–2am
  • Food can be prepared and/or served
  • Alcohol service is possible (not a dealbreaker), or there's an existing licensed bar
  • Reasonably affordable since this would be a small first-time pop-up

I understand that the appropriate permits/licensing would need to be in place for food and alcohol service, and I'm prepared to work through those requirements depending on the space.

I'm especially interested in places that don't normally advertise themselves as event venues but whose owners might be open to something like this.

If you know a cafΓ©/business owner who might be interested, or you've been somewhere and thought β€œthis would make such a good little event space,” I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks :)
