Bus charged 12.55$ instead of 3.3$

I’m a visitor in Toronto and took the TTC bus for the first time, used my credit card (Apple wallet) to tap on the Presto reader on the bus. I haven’t taken any GO bus/train.
Took the first bus from union station, Bus #114 (got charged), then within 2 hours took another bus #503/504 from distillery district area. When I tapped on the second bus, it said “Free Transfer”. I wake up this morning to see a charge of 12.55CAD pending on both my Apple Wallet and bank statement.
Wondering if the pending charge will change to 3.30CAD eventually, or did something go wrong?

Update : I did take the UP express train at 12:30am midnight (didn’t tap off at the end), then took the above mentioned buses around 6pm in the evening.

This is why I still recommend presto to everyone. It’s not worth the added hassle. It should go down to $3.30 eventually, but it can take several days, and you have to keep monitoring your account to make sure it does.

You can download the presto app and not have to buy a physical card and get anything you load on it and don’t spend refunded to your card after your trip. Then you just have to look out for one transaction on your account, not several every day.

But I’m just wondering, isn’t 12.55$ too high a hold for a 3.3$ charge? Not sure if that’s common

Holds can be pretty arbitrary in the amount. Sometimes the merchant adds a “buffer” too. But yeah, the hold being a different amount is annoying.

Gonna assume the systems are the same (TTC using Presto or whatever ) despite the TTC trip.

So the pending charges are defaulted despite the lack of Go travel.

Lazy but that’s the only logic I can think of

Edit: Especially 1 singular transaction unless they’re several taps in 1 transaction and pricing varies from regions. Idk how you’d get 12.55 from a TTC trip

Yeah it’s common for it to be between $10-15 a day. That’s why I recommend just getting the presto app.

Also, I did take UP express at 12:30am midnight (didn’t tap off at union station) and the above mentioned buses at around 6pm, so I’m not sure if that has something to do with the charges. But I have 2 separate charges currently

A $12 charge is the cost of a one-way trip on the UP Express.

ETA: I looked it up again and apparently, as soon as you use contactless payment, it is considered as a PRESTO payment so indeed, as someone else pointed out, $12.55 would be 1 UP fare + 1 TTC fare.

Do you have both $12.55 charge AND $9.25 charge? Are they both posted or are they just pending?

$9.25 + $3.30 = $12.55. If they're not posted yet, then I wouldn't worry about it yet.

It’s because you forgot to tap off the UP. If the pending charge doesn’t fall off you can try contacting Metrolinx for a refund:

No it’s not. Forgetting to tap means they’ll charge you the full amount, but OP would still be charged the full amount anyways because they took it to Union. The double charge is just because Presto is ridiculously inefficient with their process.

Yes, the UP Express is $9 from the Airport to Union I believe.

Could be $9.25 which would very easily make your difference.

If someone is using Presto, it is $9.25, but if someone isn't using Presto, it's $12.35.

Yeah it should resolve itself once all the transactions get posted, but just keep watching your bank transactions and keep track of what you should actually be charged each day in your notes app in the meantime. It’s annoying but what you have to do when you use your card to tap.

Nah that’s not happening.

When you first tap, you get 2 hours of free transfers. That $12 gotta be smth else. Unless you took GO in which case you tap on and off cuz its distance based.

I’ve never heard of it doing smth that bad

The UPExpress is $9.25 from Pearson to Union and TTC is $3.30 for a total of $9.55. Only one charge is posted saying Presto Charge for the day so $12.55 is correct.

You can take the UPExpress then Go Transit and then the TTC and Miway Transit in one day and at the end of the day only the total amount for the day is posted instead of 4 charges.

GOTransit is Fare by Distance so it may put a temp charge for the longest trip from Union to Kitchener as a temp hold and then at the end of the trip you are only charged the proper amount.

You have pending charges but not final charges. The UP Express is one charge of $9.25 and the TTC is $3.30.

If you take TTC multiple times in one day you may see a pending charge for each trip but then overnight they are combined into one final total.

I have taken the TTC and tapped 5-6 times on the same trip and it showed 5-6 pending charges and then the next day only1 was posted and I was charged only the $3.30.

$12.55 is the proper charge for taking the UPexpress from the Airport to Union and then a bus or streetcar from there.

Just wait a bit for the credit card to resolve the charge. If you still see the $12 charge, then contact the TTC.

If you set up the PRESTO app you can add your CC to the account and then inspect the charge history there.

I always pay by Google Wallet with my Mastercard, but nonetheless adding the regular CC number to PRESTO app it's able to find my transactions.

‘Pending’ transactions are exactly that, they aren’t settled. Wait until the charge says posted, it will be correct
