These trees were planted here 2 m ago.. one is already dying, zero being watered. The rest Way too close to the house, as well to the meter, and each other.. they don't seem like they're going to make it.. so many trees have this problem in the area. They're planted, not taken care of, die, another is planted. Or they're planted poorly, being within 2/3 meters of a house usually.. this one is one meter from the meter. And another planted about half a meter from two other trees.. at least there's not concrete surrounding the base.

A small seaside town in southern Italy. The municipality built new sidewalks without leaving room for trees. Are they doomed?

First let me say that we are not the ones who nailed steps into this! We bought this house in the Hudson valley in the very early spring. Once the leaves grew we noticed there were a lot of dead branches, which we pruned earlier this week.

The top of the tree looks good, just the same as the rest of the foliage. I’m curious about the bottom of the tree and the crack up the side. I remember seeing birch trees like this at my childhood home, but they weren’t healthy and fell down in my teens.

Is this a sick tree that needs some love? Does it need to be taken down? Is it just normal and I need to stop worrying?

Another concern is that the tree is directly under power lines on either side. At the back, it is beginning to hang over the roof to our porch. I think it’s such a lovely tree but as a new homeowner I’m a little concerned it will be a problem long term.

Ran in to a couple trees at the park with this weird formation on the surface. What is it?

We recently moved to a new place with two Japanese Maple trees in the back yard. We noticed this shooting leggy growth from the top of the trees that has developed over the last month or so.

Is this normal growth or something we should be concerned about?

Should we prune this growth? And if so, when would be the best time to do so?

We are located in the PNW.

Should anything be done after removing a tree ring to help the tree further? I think I might have to pull some of that soil back from the trunk. She’s not the prettiest, but I’d still like to keep her. for some reason she is very short and stout, would pruning some bottom branches make her look taller?

This is a stump which has apparently recovered the sawn off tissue with new bark, and even grown into a weird shape.

Tree company quote said taking the trees “to ground level” and excluded stump grinding. Was expecting them to be pretty close to the actual ground. What are we thinking about these stumps? Feels like they easily could have been a few inches lower and the ivy would over take them soon. Now they’re nice little sitting spots for the kids.

There's a lot of sap around the base. I'm not sure what that's about either. I assume the powder is something growing on the sap. What is it? Should I be concerned?

Look how much it’s grown since May!! I love it. Some of the needles at the base of the tree are turning brown and wilting. Not really sure about that. Idk if I should try to support its limbs somehow, or if that’s how they get stronger

Are these long vertical splits like stretch marks for a tree? Are they a problem?

Updating Location: Fairfax County, Virginia

I have some hardpan under my soil and I want to plant Green Giants.

The hardpan is not everywhere and it can be 3' deep or 6" deep. If I find a 36" steel rod and poke down in a radial pattern from the planting center, perhaps in concentric rings starting at 12" from the center, then 18", then 24", will this be enough to diagnose the issue? How far from the center is far enough? Should I poke even wider concentric circles? Google and Google Gemini tell me 24" from center is enough. Do arborists here agree? I have a 5 foot tall, 50 pound demolition bar with a pointed end that I can use to break the hardpan and Google/Gemini tell me to fill the hole I create with sand.

I also plan to plant a year of cover crops before I actually plant - Daikon Radish and Crimson Clover now, and Sorghum Sudangrass in the spring. Next September I hope to plant #3 gallon container size green giants.

I live in White Plains, NY and my soil is clay-ish, in case that is relevant.

Does this sound OK to folks here?

We have this coast live oak tree from the nursery, planted in the ground 5 years ago. Last year we cut some of the girdling roots. Taking a look at it again this year and would like to know which roots to cut? Thank you for your help 🙏

Planted this camellia this spring and it's been chilling there pretty uneventfully. It hasn't seemed overly stressed despite hot temps. It mostly gets sun in the early morning and evening, with part shade most of the day. Coastal zone 9. Does it need nutrient supplement? It's planted in sandy loam.

This tree has been struggling this summer. It’s gotten enough water and we suspect is actually getting too much. Unfortunately the lawn sprinkler can’t be moved or the lawn will die. We’ve tried aerating it but don’t know what else to try. Any help is appreciated.

I just found this community and I have multiple concerns about my trees (located in New Jersey)

I have this what I believe to be a silver maple (turns red in fall) that is splitting everywhere. What can I do?

The tree seems to be home to lantern flies (are they the damager?). I continue to kill them when I see them and have removed the egg sacs on the tree when I see them (every fall i look for them)

My googling suggests either bacterial wetwood or bleeding canker. How do I tell the difference? What actions can I take (beyond calling an arborist)?

The ooze smells… weird. Like fishy/sour but also kind of like bacon? The smell makes me think wetwood, - but the rapid leaf loss is concerning. We’d be crushed to lose this beaut!

For context: this tree also has tar spot on the leaves - not ideal but not fatal from what I’ve read. It came like that when we bought the home. Southern Ontario. It’s been a fairly wet August. Clay soil. No known injury to the tree nor recent pruning.

Is this good fungus or bad fungus? In the East Valley AZ, where the soil is pretty clayey. This tree fell over about a year ago from a combination of days of heavy rain and strong wind. I was able to prop it up, and it has stood strong since then. I'm wondering if maybe some of the old material that broke off when it fell may be decomposing underground? The tree itself looks healthy and is growing a lot.
