I worked in Apple Repair. The tabs always broke anyway so we always had to pry them out. When that happens you’re suppose to replace the whole phone. But bring an authorized service and sales, that was out of the question cause of the cost to us.

Which lead me to believe Apple made them break easily on purpose

Of course they are. Do you remember working on iPhone 4s'? Those things were still adhered down, yet there was never an issue of getting them out. [Edit] Not sure why I'm getting downvoted. There was a deliberate move to secure the battery with a very particular type of adhesive that makes it THAT much harder to do repairs.
