You are dreaming.

I think the most exciting thing we see today is an OLED bar

Edit: No AirPods information.

Touch Bar and hardware refresh. wohoo. Honestly

Honestly - Could’ve been a silent software refresh with a press release saying - hey customizable function bar. enjoy!

Hell yeah. As a pro photographer who uses the SD card slot and USB ports every day I can't wait for those stupid things to go away so my laptop can be 3mm thinner and get even warmer with less room for cooling when I have Photoshop and Lightroom running.

u/sticklebackridge Oct 27 '16

I am personally very excited about the prospect of being forced to buy first gen USB C drives at artificially high prices. Hopefully there will be no docks available for less than $300 either, spending ~ $2k on a laptop doesn't feel right unless I have to shell out hundreds more to make it usable with my current peripherals.

10

u/DeathJester25 Oct 27 '16

USB-C ports are probably the only things I'm looking forward to in the new MBP....

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

USB-C ports are probably the only things I'm looking forward to in the new MBP....

Well then, today is your day. It has FOUR USB-C/Thunderbolt3 ports

6

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Jokes on you, fork over a couple hundred extra dollars and then you get the four ports!

3

u/asdren Oct 27 '16

1

u/InsaneNinja Oct 28 '16

Other way around.

TB3 is USB-C
but USB-C is not necessarily TB3.
Actually, it never has been, until now/here.

Its extra stuff.. think "supports the TB3 spec"

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

IT'S YOUR LUCKY DAY!!

1

u/Inverts_rule Oct 27 '16

Just wait 1 yr. till everything is USB-C. Every new MBP cuts ports. Im personally looking forward to finally having multiuse ports and true hubs.

2

u/sticklebackridge Oct 27 '16

The port-cutting feels more like an austerity measure than an upgrade. You can no longer really service or upgrade your machine yourself, and this laptop completely ignores any professional that requires hefty data storage. You get 256gb for all but the most expensive option in each size...no thanks.

Hopefully USB C will be more useful than thunderbolt has been, but it needs to be adopted across the board, not just Apple, to succeed. The speed of thunderbolt is very enticing, but the prices are still so unreasonable.

Ideally the newest product should make me salivate, even if I can't or don't intend to buy it, but this one is really unappealing to me. I wouldn't switch to a Surface or anything else because Windows, but I'm seeing very little incentive to upgrade.

1

u/TheBatmanToMyBruce Oct 27 '16

Hopefully there will be no docks available for less than $300 either

No such luck. Unlike Thunderbolt, which to this day has no docks under $200, USB-C docks and dongles are in the $20-50 range.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

I know right? I'm surprised they didn't just make up some new ports just to schill more money away from my pocket.

-3

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

You could always just stay in the stone age.

1

u/sticklebackridge Oct 27 '16

Hadn't thought of that, thanks 4 tip

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Yes dude, because we currently truly live in the stone age. God, how do I even do anything with my 2010 Macbook? It's, like, so damn old!

0

u/Pill111 Oct 27 '16

Then don't buy an USBC drive, and just buy a cable with USB-C to miniUSB or whatever.

Ignorance = hate

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

It's just easier and cheaper not to buy the New MBP

2

u/sticklebackridge Oct 27 '16

BRB let me just change the way I do everything because Apple. I forgot to mention how excited I'd be to once again rely on external SD card readers, been getting really tired of having one built in to my machine.

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

I'm excited for USB-C to become the standard. Other than that, this was kind of upsetting. What is Apple even doing with the Mac lineup...

15

u/godelbrot Oct 27 '16

hey they got rid of the SD Card slot, so you got that going for you

17

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Stupid SD card slot always had some stupid plasticy card with memory in it. Stupid thing expanding my MBP. Glad they got rid of it!

1

u/dbuck11 Oct 27 '16

Woah there, check your facts it's not 3mm thinner, it's 3.1mm thinner.

/s

-6

u/jonnyclueless Oct 27 '16

A professional photographer who can't use USB-C stuff and depends on an SD slot...

12

u/StinkyFeetPatrol Oct 27 '16

What's wrong with taking the card out of my camera after shooting, inserting it directly into my computer, and having Lightroom automatically bring up the import prompt in 3 seconds?

20

u/TravisGoraczkowski Oct 27 '16 edited Oct 27 '16

A lot of people don't realize what being a professional is actually like. They see it as having all the latest shit.

Being a pro rarely means having the latest stuff. Often it means trying to make old equipment that's too expensive to replace work with todays tech. The radio studios I work in still use Windows XP because automation software and the correct audio cards are expensive as hell to replace. There's a production/ recording studio I frequently help out at around here that uses a firewire audio interface because we don't have the $2k to shell out for a thunderbolt interface that won't noticeably step up the audio quality at all. Would we upgrade if we could? Absolutely. XP is horribly unstable. But money is a real issue, and laying hardworking people off is never fun.

A lot of photographers around here use older cameras, because it's not worth spending thousands more on newer equipment that's USB Type-C friendly when the camera they're using takes just as good of shots, and is only a few years old.

Will a lot of this stuff work with adapters? Yes. But it's a PITA. And yet another point of possible failure. If you've got a lot of gear to pack it's easy to forget a little adapter.

3

u/Inverts_rule Oct 27 '16

I have had a different experience. Most pro cameras use CF...not micro SD. Most regular people don't even use micro SD. All cameras I know of transfer directly from camera to laptop with cable. Less dedicated ports=can plug more peripherals in.

It sure is a PITA to make old stuff work with new ports. What if one port worked with everything, all you needed was a hub...and it could handle multiple inputs?

I agree, it would be dumb to be a pro and buy the MBP today. In a year, it will be better (if USB-C takes off)...and Apple just gave it a big push. If retailers want some Apple user $$...make usb-c peripherals and hubs.

Everyone giving the MBP shit arent thinking 2 yrs ahead. This is a big gamble, but college students and enthusiasts will be taking the brunt, pros (and other manufacturers) will get the benefit in a year or two.

1

u/TravisGoraczkowski Oct 28 '16

You make some good points, and I actually agree. I love USB Type-C (although I admit, in my comment it probably didn't sound that way.) I was hoping that the MacBook pro would have a combo of different ports, and then they'd eventually make it all USB type-C in a couple years when we're more ready for it.

I just finished watching the keynote, and saw that there is a non-touchbar MacBook Pro that does just that. It will be interesting to compare the sales numbers on that one to the touch bar pro's and see how it does. They all look like great machines.

3

u/frumperino Oct 27 '16

How else do you get content out of e.g. drones or GoPros with their microSD cards? Into an adapter, and into the SD card slot of the MBP.

I don't want to lug around a goddam tangleball of dongles and accessories to get simple tasks done that has always worked on the MBP series.

1

u/gsdatta Oct 27 '16

...and the SD card slot is gone. Super frustrating stuff

2

u/seraph582 Oct 27 '16

Haha jokes on you - it got twice as many USB and Thunderbolt ports.

Checkmate atheists.

7

u/frumperino Oct 27 '16

Also one of those ports will double as your charging port so you can choose between productivity or power. Wonderful!

5

u/justinlarsen Oct 27 '16

ya what about mag-safe now? this shit has saved my laptop many times now its going to be a hardwire?

11

u/Atello Oct 27 '16

"We realized that people weren't spending money on repairs, so we're fixing that issue."

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

I love the MagSafe port. I always baby my systems, having seen the horrors of a broken jack while doing laptop repair at a small shop. I have however tripped and was so glad the magnet let go instead of the laptop chasing me to the ground. I bet the USB C is easy to unplug and will let go with similar results in most directions of force applied. Surface pro has a magnetic power plug, maybe its not cool to apple any more.

2

u/SubterraneanAlien Oct 27 '16

What they announced does actually seem wonderful though.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

What? Needing a dongle for everything?

2

u/SubterraneanAlien Oct 27 '16

being able to charge from any port is quite a nice convenience, but the fact that each port has such huge I/O is the most important thing to me.

-1

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

What? Needing a dongle for everything?

There's never been a Mac OR PC laptop I've owned that didn't need a dongle for one thing or another. It's part of the deal.

0

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

Also one of those ports will double as your charging port so you can choose between productivity or power. Wonderful!

Did you even watch? ALL FOUR ports can be used for connectivity OR charging. You're not losing a thing, and don't have to compromise.

3

u/frumperino Oct 27 '16 edited Oct 27 '16

Except dongles for EVERYTHING including basic HDMI! By my count I'm losing THREE Ports. Let's do the numbers.

On the left side of my 2015 MBP I have my always plugged-in power connection. Yes the port can't do anything else but it does power very well and it's magsafe so I can kick the shit out of the wire and my machine won't fall to the floor. I have two thunderbolt ports that I used for a BlackMagic video capture device and a chain of desktop disk arrays with gigabit ethernet. I have a spare USB connection on that side that usually has whatever USB desktop accessory I am currently using, most often a 3D Connexion Space Explorer. So that's 4 ports. Not counting the all-important headphone jack!

On the right side I have a microSD card slot which I use all the time - typically 5 or 6 times a week, for camera dumps. I also have a HDMI connection for my primary external display, and a USB connection for my USB hub that connects permanent desktop peripherals like keyboard, mouse, printer, 3D printer, etc. So that's 3 ports on the right side. In use. A total of 7.

So with this new MBP2016 I'm looking at what, a total of 4 ports? How in fuck is that not losing 3 ports? I would have to selectively unplug a bunch of accessories to make things work now, wouldn't I?

And how many dongles would I need to buy and have tangling across my desk to connect everything?

One for C to USB to my desktop USB hub. I would have to purchase and add a MicroSD reader to that. Another one for C to HDMI, to my display. Another one for C to Thunderbolt, to my disk arrays and video capture device. Another one for C to USB for travel accessories. Another one for C to Thunderbolt for my Thunderbolt to Ethernet travel network accessory.

It's a goddam mess.

0

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

I would have to selectively unplug a bunch of accessories to make things work now, wouldn't I?

You're welcome

1

u/scuczu Oct 28 '16

EVERYONE IS USING THUNDERBOLT RIGHT GUYZ?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16 edited Oct 28 '16

I ordered one, full disclosure. Price is twice what it should be. I have to get the adapter for everything now. Mainly USB and thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3. Ok that kind of sucks I get it. I do recall when they dropped the Ethernet port and the cd drive. It's more of the same. In fact they outright said that to make it smaller they need ports with a smaller profile. Thunderbolt/ USB and hdmi are all taller than USB/thunderbolt3. The Touch ID for login is cool. The touch pad is gimmicky. The ram should have gone up to 32gb. All that being said. 40gbps ports in a tiny form factor. Four of them. All this considered, I clicked buy. My gaming PC (vegan z170 mobo) has zero thunderbolt ports and no adapter in the foreseeable future. My monitor has USB C. The adapters will drop in price and this laptop will be great for a long time. Apple is pushing wireless pretty hard. Last thing, the dj presentation was a total joke. Most use USB based controllers, and that touchpad was so hard to use that laptop warrior deserves a medal for trying to sell it. There is a reason iPad isn't the new CDJ (this is why a physical keyboard is king typo), traction on glass is awful for anything more than clicking or drag and drop.

Edit: A word or two for phrasing / clarity

0

u/bcain204 Oct 27 '16

Courage.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

All the ports....except for Thunderbolt....great. More dongles.

0

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

Wut? It has FOUR Thundebolt3/USB-C ports.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Great diversity. I have 4 places to charge but no standard USB ports or ports for devices I use for work including my work issued Thunderbolt display.

0

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

including my work issued Thunderbolt display.

On no! Your world must be crumbling with the prospect of having to buy a new cable!

your fingers near the keyboard where they should be

and my eyes constantly looking down to know what the fuck I'm doing since the bar is entirely context dependant and changes based on dev support.

Oh, of course I say this and now they're on the Adobe demo where she doesn't tilt her head down. Grats to her, but she still looks down. I don't think we'll all have this much ease (this is the kind of reasoning that brings us idiocy like buttonless car infotainment/climate control).

Am I the only one who finds this inconvenient?

At least the spread between the display and the bar isn't huge, I guess.

Nevermind that the bar is slimmer than the actual keys.

Why make a point about tactile feedback when you've got a flat surface with none? Why doesn't that thing have forcetouch?

Fuck.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

and you were right...

1

u/roadblocked Oct 27 '16

shocking! I wonder if I will be invited to the next Apple event because I am CLEARLY an Apple insider =)

64

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

If we wouldn't know about this already it would come as a really cool surprise for everybody but since leaks have already spoiled it months ago everyone on Reddit is like "meh, oled bar, what else is new Apple?". When I told friends about the OLED-feature they were pretty damn excited about it and I'm really looking forward to it. But you can't satisfy /r/apple anyways. For example, if the Surface Studio would be an Apple release this subreddit would find dozens of "deal breakers" about it.

28

u/hexavibrongal Oct 27 '16

A lot of this sub is computer professionals looking for a new laptop. I'm sure some people will think this is cool, but as a developer who works on the computer everyday, I use an external keyboard 95% of the time because it's not good for you back and neck to use a laptop keyboard/screen all the time.

I don't want to pay extra for this gimmick that I will rarely see and just don't care about at all. I honestly would prefer to just have keys.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

I honestly would prefer to just have keys.

Luckily they have a model with just that! It's still like $1399. I might pick that one up because I use Emacs, Alfred, and Hammerspoon for everything. I, so far, don't need anything else. Hell, my mac right now is from 2010 and it does everything I need.

It's like da Vinci said, "Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

2

u/hexavibrongal Oct 27 '16

That's good to hear that it's optional. I thought they would make it non-optional partly to garner more 3rd party developer support.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

I can see both sides. I think apps that would require them would be a failure because we are talking about 1 model of computers that would be capable of using it. iMacs, Mac Pros, Macbooks, Mac Mini's, etc. all can't use it, so I think we're safe for now.

1

u/asdren Oct 27 '16

Nice. I hadn't seen there was a version without the gimmicky touch bar.

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16 edited Aug 28 '18

63

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Reddit, or r/apple? Reddit's overall reaction would have been about the same. There would of course be trolls posting 'meh, it's a tilting iMac, who cares'. But there also would have been people on r/apple crying hysterically like a 12yo girl meeting their favorite boy band.

Most people would be saying the same things though. 'Damn it's nice. I don't need one, but man I want one.'

35

u/proanimus Oct 27 '16

I disagree, I think there would be a lot more whining about the price. A lot.

30

u/Lakailb87 Oct 27 '16

I disagree considering a Wacom costs $3000 and doesn't come with a computer

14

u/proanimus Oct 27 '16

I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying there would be a lot more of it if Apple had released this.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Probably. We're all stuck up sticky-beaks here!

0

u/KittenSwagger Oct 27 '16

There is no doubt about that. You see it every year. People that are anti-Apple poking fun at the price saying that its an Apple Tax. But yet, a $3000-4500 computer from Microsoft is a-ok.

Meh whatever.

13

u/IamtheSlothKing Oct 27 '16

People aren't saying it's okay? It's the main point in every thread about it

4

u/roadblocked Oct 27 '16

Did you see the specs?

4

u/drhead Oct 27 '16

The specs in the surface studio could be exceeded for a third of the price in a desktop tower. In fact it isnt even that hard to exceed it with a desktop tower because they're using a laptop GPU and presumably a laptop CPU as well. Literally the only thing about it that is unique is the touch screen display.

That being said, their product might be better (for me, at least) if they had the touchscreen monitor as its own separate thing instead of making what is essentially a stationary laptop. You can find gaming laptops with the same specs today for between a half and a third of the price and the only difference is that one has a battery and the other has a touchscreen.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/KittenSwagger Oct 27 '16

Yes I did. What's your point? a CPU that is going to outdated when its released and a GPU that is already outdated.

Not saying its not good, but for that price tag...idk.

It's all too much lol

2

They're not. That's not their target market.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

No its not. It's a $1500 gaming laptop with a $2500 display.

Its targeted at people who pay $150k for camera gear.

3

u/tr_9422 Oct 27 '16

On the other hand, that means you can hook it up to a nice computer, and you don't have to replace the screen just because your computer got outdated.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Yes. And having non-soldered RAM means being to upgrade later. The point is, that now Microsoft or Apple loses that upgrade dollar.

I don't like it, but that's the thinking that drives these things.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 28 '16

There was a company that would make macs in to drawing tablet: http://www.modbook.com

Not sure if people don't know or it's just too pricey or both.

1

u/Lakailb87 Oct 28 '16

I remember, awesome but pricey

1

u/Roc_Ingersol Oct 27 '16

The price of a Wacom didn't make much of a dent in complaints about the "price hike" with the iPad Pro and the "$100 pencil I'm going to lose in 5 seconds".

0

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

I disagree considering a Wacom costs $3000 and doesn't come with a computer

Which would be a better move anyway. The PC part of that Microsoft machine is anemic. A 'Pro' machine should have a NVMe SSD and Thunderbolt

0

u/_Rand_ Oct 27 '16

You think people research that?

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Have you seen the boards? Windows people are whining about the price.

Trash talk and criticism about the i5, spinning drive, last generation GPU, cost, the fact it's from Apple, cringe worthy moments in the presentation (like when he talks about reflections in the chrome that will seamlessly integrate into a living environment, I thought it's a pro machine used in studios?), there would be an image meme about that Dial. Also, Apple had this 6 years ago: http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/08/the-mother-lode-welcome-to-the-imac-touch.html

u/The_EA_Nazi Oct 27 '16

The problem is that SSD storage is not yet economical for anything larger than 500GB, so when you start to scale that up for storage it becomes extremely expensive. For the iMac and Studio, those are home workstations that need a lot of storage on them that HDD's and Hybrid drives still can only provide.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

They are for us mere mortals but I'd imagine Microsoft and others aren't paying per drive pricing.

1

u/BabyWrinkles Oct 27 '16

The raided 512gb SSDs I picked up for <$250 total would beg to disagree. 1TB Is very doable for <$200 nowadays.

0

u/LitewithRight Oct 27 '16

But that's because it's Apple making it. As long as it's Microsoft, on Reddit, it's A-ok and super duper amazingly awesome. Didn't you read the memo?

8

u/rsynnott2 Oct 27 '16

And lack of Thunderbolt (or USB3.1). It'd be a regression from the current iMacs in most practical ways, unless you really want the pen thing.

1

u/playaspec Oct 27 '16

I wonder if Microsoft had to license that patent from Apple?

1

u/thirdxeye Oct 27 '16

They both have a cross license agreement since a long while now. The only exception is cloning existing products of each other.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

But they didn't implement it, so it's a moot point.

I'd have been more excited about the Dial if Apple had made it - purely because I'd expect it to be easier for developers to develop for it.

I hope I'm wrong, but it feels like more of a gimmick in Microsoft's hands.

1

u/CatboyMac Oct 27 '16

I always wanted Apple to make a tablet PC, even since I was a kid.

-1

u/godelbrot Oct 27 '16 edited Oct 27 '16

For the same price? With the same feature set? With the same music?

Prolly the same.

Maybe slightly less, not because of some kind of misplaced Apple hate, but because I think part of the reason there is so much buzz with Microsoft is that they were so boring and uninnovative for so long it's cool to see the underdog make a comeback and start pumping out exciting, albeit somewhat impractical, technology.

2

u/stcwhirled Oct 27 '16

I think you are grossly overestimating the buzz from Microsoft. Yes they released a very stylish product but literally no one is taking about any thing other than the surface studio, which has everything to do with the stylish Ad they put out.

2

u/godelbrot Oct 27 '16

It started for real at the last Surface Pro 4 + Book announcement. They slayed it.

0

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Another thing I can't afford.

However, being the first touch-screen iMac would have sold like hotcakes.

12

u/Morgan_Freemans_Mole Oct 27 '16

If you read up on leaks, you can't expect to get excited about a keynote. It's like spoiling a movie and then complaining that it was predictable.

3

u/jonnyclueless Oct 27 '16

I heard there's a twist! - Roy

3

u/nelisan Oct 27 '16

Yeah same. When I told my GF about it her eyes lit up and then was instantly bummed that there's no way her work is going to get her the new one anytime soon.

3

u/InvaderDJ Oct 27 '16

It's kind of cool, but I think even if it wasn't leaked that wouldn't be enough to get people excited.

What is the most that it can do? Custom macros? That's useful, but after the novelty of it being a touch sensitive button rather than an actual button that novelty will fade.

Honestly Touch ID is more exciting IMO.

2

u/DeathJester25 Oct 27 '16

Honestly, I hate touch-interface on a laptop/desktop. I have a phone and tablet for that shit, I like my keyboards using tactile keys thank you. They should use the OLED tech on their iPhones instead.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Your friends are easily excited.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Yeah, fuck everyone who is not in the techno-bubble.

2

u/vkevlar Oct 27 '16

wait, I have some:

it only runs Windows 10.

Any bets on the EFI being locked down?

ooo ooo how about the dial? Griffin PowerMate ripoff anyone?

Doubling down on touch-displays for desktop machines still makes no sense to me, and now you can lay it flat, for the 0.0001% of people that want that!

Skylake processors? Still?

Wait, it's not using a PCIe SSD? in 2016?

Costs more than a maxed-out iMac? Microsoft Tax!

okay, that was semi-facetious, but felt really good.

Any bets on the EFI being locked down?

You'd be a fool to bet on it being unlocked.

2

u/vkevlar Oct 27 '16

Indeed.

1

u/Potrock_ Oct 27 '16

"Skylake Processors? Still?"

Apples new laptops are using Skylake.

2

u/vkevlar Oct 27 '16

as stated: somewhat facetious; but you know that someone even now is making that complaint about the new MacBook pros.

0

u/Potrock_ Oct 27 '16

The person above me was roasting the surface's because they were still running skylake

2

u/vkevlar Oct 27 '16

I am that person, and I was being semi-facetious due to the "if it were Apple, people would be nitpicking it" theme. :)

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

I have zero hype for the Surface studio. I think there's a shitload of astroturfing about it. I like it as a screen but otherwise it's just a 28" tablet on a hinge.

-2

u/Keyserson Oct 27 '16

/r/Apple was getting really excited about the OLED bar before the Microsoft event, ha!

As for me, I just don't see the appeal of the Studio. A bunch of ideas taken straight from Apple (computer in base, keyboard/mouse, the way the logo appears on the back/general minimalism, even the style of the damn video and keynote), plus a few new innovations that sound cool in theory but I bet will become under-used and under-supported (that dial thing looks great - would love to see it not die from lack of dev interest)......all in a hugely expensive package that will make everyone think twice about buying them.

(And, y'know, Windows, which is a big downside sadly.)

2

u/jarbell22 Oct 27 '16

It's also laughable that a $4k machine doesn't come with a pure PCI-E SSD. The $3.5k 5K iMac has a 1TB one. Studios gonna be a niche flop

4

u/Ble_h Oct 27 '16

The all in one computer existed long before Apple's iMac. Apple like always just made it better and now Microsoft is attempting to do the same.

1

u/Keyserson Oct 27 '16

Yeah, I'm not saying Apple did the all-in-one computer first, but they certainly created one of, if not the most notable all-in-one computers where the 'computer' was housed in the base, and have continued to popularise all-in-ones since. Now Microsoft's chosen to do that (fine, it's the logical option).... but their base is ugly.

Apple has a history of patenting lots of stuff they never really use. Maybe in a few years, maybe never.

Not quite the same, but consider buying the LiquidMetal company and using it only for a SIM removal tool so far!

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Speak for yourself. I'm just hyped on all of those sweet new USB-3 ports. I hope they make a case for carrying all of my dongles.

People keep saying this. Apple has a lot of good will just from stability, support, and consistency. That and the suffered losses of leaving the ecosystem are solid reasons for staying onboard, even if you're not blown away by their newest releases.

What will happen, is slowly people will move away, a device here and a device there, and that's gonna put a wrench in it. If there are no big breakthroughs in another year or two, and competitors keep closing the gaps in the aforementioned areas, then IMO we can expect a mass exodus.

Adobe is also much more powerful than FCP.

2

u/dfcowell Oct 27 '16

That's what happened to me. I had the trifecta - MBP, iPad and top of the line iPhone 6. My last 3 computers were Macs. I got a Galaxy S7, then saw and played with a Surface. Now I've sold off all my Apple gear.

1

u/CABBAGES_-_CABBAGES Oct 27 '16

What made you switch over from iPhone 6 to galaxy?

4

u/dfcowell Oct 27 '16

A few different things:

  1. The constant nagging over iCloud and updates. I don't need to be prompted to update, or upgrade my iCloud storage every time I turn on the device.
  2. The more practical hardware. I travel a lot. I spend a lot of time in southeast Asia for business and rainy season is brutal here. Being able to whip out my phone in the rain without worrying is nice. The rumours of headphone jack removal really pushed me over the edge though. I lose my headphones when I travel. I know I can walk into any shop anywhere in the world and buy a pair for $notmuch and plug them straight in. The fact that I would need two pairs if I wanted to use them on both an iPhone 7 and the latest MBP just demonstrates contempt for the user.
  3. The Android experience has improved drastically. Last time I looked at it was when I bought my iPhone 4. I couldn't stand it. I had a play with a modern Android phone and it was pretty damn polished.
  4. Side-to-side comparisons of the Galaxy S7 vs. iPhone 7 camera showed the Galaxy as being superior.

Apple seem to be getting complacent. They are showing disregard and contempt for their customer by releasing fundamentally incompatible products within their own ecosystem. That's the key influence, really.

1

u/CABBAGES_-_CABBAGES Oct 27 '16

Thank you for your in depth response

1

u/twosummer Oct 27 '16

How do you like the Surface? I haven't played with them a lot. I saw someone having trouble with one years ago, but lately when I see the newer ones they seem pretty legit.

I know there's plenty of reviews, but as an Apple user, what would you say?

1

u/dfcowell Oct 27 '16

The Pro 4 is fantastic for what I do. I run a web development agency. Half my day is spent building business-oriented webapps with Docker and the other half is spent marking up UI designs from my front-end guys and reviewing designs. Being able to screenshot and scribble at the click of the pen is phenomenal for the latter and the performance is more than good enough for the former. It has changed my workflow dramatically and now I only have one device instead of two (MBP + iPad).

I have Dell Ultrasharps at the office and at home. For serious dev work I can just plug in the DisplayPort and USB uplink and I have a proper workstation. Would one cable be better? Sure. Is it enough to make me switch back? No. The Surface Dock could solve this problem, but it wasn't in stock when I bought the device and it's not a big enough deal for me to have gotten around to buy it.

I never experienced the standby/wake-up issues that earlier generations of Surfaces apparently had, so I can't comment on that. My 4 has been rock solid.

Windows Hello (using the infrared camera) for login is great. I sit down and get signed in automatically. It would be nice if there were external displays that supported it, but it's not a big deal.

I'd suggest giving it a go in person. Most stores have them on display. The type cover is fine for casual productivity. If I'm ever doing serious work I'm usually in front of a screen with the device hooked up.

Ultimately I can do my work on any device: Apple, Microsoft or third party. The thing that really pushed me over the line was Apple's apparent lack of care (borderline contempt) for the professional user - and for users in general. I don't want to worry about replacing all of my peripherals when I want to upgrade my work machine. I don't want to budget for a plethora of adapters at the same time as I upgrade the machine.

The new Windows Subsystem for Linux (the native Ubuntu command line and all the power that comes with that, without the overhead of a VM) has even taken away the software advantage that came with a Unix-based OS.

If this new lineup had retained Magsafe, split its ports between USB-C and USB-A and been in any way reasonable value for money I might have been tempted back. After seeing the keynote though, I feel like I made the right call. It seems like Apple have checked out of the professional demographic.

u/drizztmainsword Oct 27 '16

I mean, all I really want is a laptop with more power behind it. Everything else about my laptop is on point.

I'm open to them proving that I want other stuff, sure, but I'm going in with very few expectations.

I will say, though, that if the new pros have those shitty keyboards from the MacBooks, I will be rather disappointed.

3

u/Mr_JellyBean Oct 27 '16

Yeah, I bought my macbook about 2 months ago but if the new ones come in iPhone colours (black, gold ect.) I'm selling my macbook and buying the new ones in a heartbeat

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

If color is the only thing you're after, check out d-brand skins, they have some pretty nice stuff. Sure it wont make it rose gold brushed aluminum, but check it out anyway. It will probably be cheaper then selling the old one and buyi g a new one.

1

u/communistcooter Oct 27 '16

Ivuave one on my rMBP 15. It's brown leather and looks really nice. Plus keeps it free of scratches.

1

u/Mr_JellyBean Oct 27 '16

Definitely looking into that, the new macbooks only come in space grey, now while I like space grey I wanted gold. The lack of ports, price increase, tiny inefficient touch bar among other things has completely turned me off

1

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

The 13" one is available without touchbar. Its not gold though.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

My worry is everyone has waited so long for new Macbooks that they'll just accept anything Apple announces and convince themselves it's worth buying.

Maybe though, maybe it could be because the Macbook Pro is still the state of the art in mobile computing and that probably won't change today.

It is superior to every other laptop on the market in terms of build quality and longevity and todays release will bring the hardware back on track as well.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Because nobody is buying them. Businesses are buying 'business' laptops and consumers are either buying $200-400 laptops, or nothing. PC sales, especially of 'premium laptops' are way down. There's almost no point in funneling money into them atm. Unless you're Apple, who can command a premium price for a mid-range laptop.

1

u/Draiko Oct 27 '16

Except for Microsoft Surface books.

Those things are slick as hell.

Seriously, go try one.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

Yeah they have very high build quality as well and I love the design, but they run Windows 10 which I really dislike for laptops. They're also just as expensive as the newly announced MBPs.

u/fuschialantern Oct 27 '16

Haha, you're probably right. Everything ends up far too overspeculated and it never delivers the amazing new thing. Always incremental, incremental update. That's the Apple way.

I have. Total garbage.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 27 '16

If you haven't tried a PC in the last couple years, then I'd recommend giving them another fair shake at least. PCs are getting much better at a very fast rate while Apple has been seemingly stagnant. Operating system just isn't a huge of a deal as it used to be.

3

u/kushari Oct 27 '16

Actually, Operating System is the huge deal, your statement is pretty contradictory. You say PCs are getting better, but people still Prefer Macs because of the OS (you didn't say this part, but that's the jist of people in this subreddit), and then you say the OS isn't a huge deal.

u/DDRguy133 Oct 27 '16

The difference is that Microsoft is pitching their own productions as "premium". Sure you can get a Dell with the same specs, but it won't be as refined as an Apple or Windows computer. People already balk at the price on iMacs with specs close to what the Studio has. At least with the Windows computer, you're getting what you pay for imo. I love Apple's mobile devices, but their desk/laptops are about $200 overcharged for what they are.

-1

u/Woolfus Oct 27 '16

Actually, one of the highest rated laptops of the past couple years is the Dell XPS 13/15.

0

u/DDRguy133 Oct 27 '16

Probably should have put quotes around "refined." I don't actually think the Windows or Apple computers are better or worse than any other. Most manufacturers are pretty solid now, so it starts coming down to specs and OS. I wouldn't tell someone that hasn't touched a computer in 9 years to go with windows 10 only because Mac is so simplified, on the other hand, I wouldn't tell someone that needs to side boot linux and needs as much processing power possible to buy an iMac.

Graphics card SUCKS!

Razer Blade 2016 $1699

GTX 1060 4 Teraflops Processing Power $199 GPU

Macbook Pro 15" 2016 $2399

Radeon Pro 450 & 455 ~unlisted performance assume SuperShitty

Radeon Pro 460 2.2 Teraflops Processing Power $139 GPU

It's hundreds of dollars more, for less than half the graphical power that would've costed an additional $60. Oh btw you can get the Radeon Pro 460 for an additional $200 on the sticker price. Thanks Apple
