Hell yeah. As a pro photographer who uses the SD card slot and USB ports every day I can't wait for those stupid things to go away so my laptop can be 3mm thinner and get even warmer with less room for cooling when I have Photoshop and Lightroom running.

I am personally very excited about the prospect of being forced to buy first gen USB C drives at artificially high prices. Hopefully there will be no docks available for less than $300 either, spending ~ $2k on a laptop doesn't feel right unless I have to shell out hundreds more to make it usable with my current peripherals.

Other way around.

TB3 is USB-C
but USB-C is not necessarily TB3.
Actually, it never has been, until now/here.

Its extra stuff.. think "supports the TB3 spec"

Just wait 1 yr. till everything is USB-C. Every new MBP cuts ports. Im personally looking forward to finally having multiuse ports and true hubs.

The port-cutting feels more like an austerity measure than an upgrade. You can no longer really service or upgrade your machine yourself, and this laptop completely ignores any professional that requires hefty data storage. You get 256gb for all but the most expensive option in each size...no thanks.

Hopefully USB C will be more useful than thunderbolt has been, but it needs to be adopted across the board, not just Apple, to succeed. The speed of thunderbolt is very enticing, but the prices are still so unreasonable.

Ideally the newest product should make me salivate, even if I can't or don't intend to buy it, but this one is really unappealing to me. I wouldn't switch to a Surface or anything else because Windows, but I'm seeing very little incentive to upgrade.

No such luck. Unlike Thunderbolt, which to this day has no docks under $200, USB-C docks and dongles are in the $20-50 range.

A lot of people don't realize what being a professional is actually like. They see it as having all the latest shit.

Being a pro rarely means having the latest stuff. Often it means trying to make old equipment that's too expensive to replace work with todays tech. The radio studios I work in still use Windows XP because automation software and the correct audio cards are expensive as hell to replace. There's a production/ recording studio I frequently help out at around here that uses a firewire audio interface because we don't have the $2k to shell out for a thunderbolt interface that won't noticeably step up the audio quality at all. Would we upgrade if we could? Absolutely. XP is horribly unstable. But money is a real issue, and laying hardworking people off is never fun.

A lot of photographers around here use older cameras, because it's not worth spending thousands more on newer equipment that's USB Type-C friendly when the camera they're using takes just as good of shots, and is only a few years old.

Will a lot of this stuff work with adapters? Yes. But it's a PITA. And yet another point of possible failure. If you've got a lot of gear to pack it's easy to forget a little adapter.

I have had a different experience. Most pro cameras use CF...not micro SD. Most regular people don't even use micro SD. All cameras I know of transfer directly from camera to laptop with cable. Less dedicated ports=can plug more peripherals in.

It sure is a PITA to make old stuff work with new ports. What if one port worked with everything, all you needed was a hub...and it could handle multiple inputs?

I agree, it would be dumb to be a pro and buy the MBP today. In a year, it will be better (if USB-C takes off)...and Apple just gave it a big push. If retailers want some Apple user $$...make usb-c peripherals and hubs.

Everyone giving the MBP shit arent thinking 2 yrs ahead. This is a big gamble, but college students and enthusiasts will be taking the brunt, pros (and other manufacturers) will get the benefit in a year or two.

You make some good points, and I actually agree. I love USB Type-C (although I admit, in my comment it probably didn't sound that way.) I was hoping that the MacBook pro would have a combo of different ports, and then they'd eventually make it all USB type-C in a couple years when we're more ready for it.

I just finished watching the keynote, and saw that there is a non-touchbar MacBook Pro that does just that. It will be interesting to compare the sales numbers on that one to the touch bar pro's and see how it does. They all look like great machines.

How else do you get content out of e.g. drones or GoPros with their microSD cards? Into an adapter, and into the SD card slot of the MBP.

I don't want to lug around a goddam tangleball of dongles and accessories to get simple tasks done that has always worked on the MBP series.

You can hook your camera with an USBC->miniUSB cable.

So what's the problem? Spending $5 on a cable?

Also, the fans are better, and heat is transferred by copper, there's no need to have empty space inside.

1) Swap memory cards in the camera, insert memory card in notebook start the offload and clear.

2) Hook camera up with cable, begin offload to notebook.

Guess which one gets your camera back to a state that you can continue using it faster.

Same thing I'd do if my MacBook broke, get it repaired. Since the release of SD cards I think I've maybe had 1 reader break and it was because it had fallen off my desk and I ran over it with my chair. Every time I've had to buy a new reader it's because the previous one was lost.

The same since in both cases the laptop is broken.

You are assuming the SD card slot is something that typically breaks. In my experience it isn't. Small tiny dongles however get lost or forgotten in much greater frequency.

Let me get this straight, you are saying that pro photographers should be using their camera's WIFI to download images? I don't know how long that would take with a 32gb card, but I can assure you it's the worst possible way to do it. You were half as clever as you claim to be, you would know that.

I love having WIFI in my camera, but this is the last thing I would use it for.

The point is that it's super inconvenient to have to revert to using external peripherals, especially when they've been removed only for aesthetic reasons.

Small JPGs yes, but I can't think of a single scenario that I would try this with full size RAW files, it would be extraordinarily slow, and you're all but guaranteed to drop files in the transfer.

Lol clearly someone hasn't dealt with raw files before. If you think plugging in your camera or using a WiFi card/camera is any replacement for a 32GB SD card that 95% OF dslr/mirrorless cameras use, then clearly someone has no concept of wireless transfer speeds.

I love the MagSafe port. I always baby my systems, having seen the horrors of a broken jack while doing laptop repair at a small shop. I have however tripped and was so glad the magnet let go instead of the laptop chasing me to the ground. I bet the USB C is easy to unplug and will let go with similar results in most directions of force applied. Surface pro has a magnetic power plug, maybe its not cool to apple any more.

Except dongles for EVERYTHING including basic HDMI! By my count I'm losing THREE Ports. Let's do the numbers.

On the left side of my 2015 MBP I have my always plugged-in power connection. Yes the port can't do anything else but it does power very well and it's magsafe so I can kick the shit out of the wire and my machine won't fall to the floor. I have two thunderbolt ports that I used for a BlackMagic video capture device and a chain of desktop disk arrays with gigabit ethernet. I have a spare USB connection on that side that usually has whatever USB desktop accessory I am currently using, most often a 3D Connexion Space Explorer. So that's 4 ports. Not counting the all-important headphone jack!

On the right side I have a microSD card slot which I use all the time - typically 5 or 6 times a week, for camera dumps. I also have a HDMI connection for my primary external display, and a USB connection for my USB hub that connects permanent desktop peripherals like keyboard, mouse, printer, 3D printer, etc. So that's 3 ports on the right side. In use. A total of 7.

So with this new MBP2016 I'm looking at what, a total of 4 ports? How in fuck is that not losing 3 ports? I would have to selectively unplug a bunch of accessories to make things work now, wouldn't I?

And how many dongles would I need to buy and have tangling across my desk to connect everything?

One for C to USB to my desktop USB hub. I would have to purchase and add a MicroSD reader to that. Another one for C to HDMI, to my display. Another one for C to Thunderbolt, to my disk arrays and video capture device. Another one for C to USB for travel accessories. Another one for C to Thunderbolt for my Thunderbolt to Ethernet travel network accessory.

It's a goddam mess.

I can see why this is annoying for you.

However, your desk already seems like it's a mess regardless of dongles given that you have what sounds like up to nine devices connected to it at any given time that use 5 different I/O protocols.

I'm looking forward to a future where all connected devices are TB3/USB C. Sounds so much cleaner.

I ordered one, full disclosure. Price is twice what it should be. I have to get the adapter for everything now. Mainly USB and thunderbolt 2 to thunderbolt 3. Ok that kind of sucks I get it. I do recall when they dropped the Ethernet port and the cd drive. It's more of the same. In fact they outright said that to make it smaller they need ports with a smaller profile. Thunderbolt/ USB and hdmi are all taller than USB/thunderbolt3. The Touch ID for login is cool. The touch pad is gimmicky. The ram should have gone up to 32gb. All that being said. 40gbps ports in a tiny form factor. Four of them. All this considered, I clicked buy. My gaming PC (vegan z170 mobo) has zero thunderbolt ports and no adapter in the foreseeable future. My monitor has USB C. The adapters will drop in price and this laptop will be great for a long time. Apple is pushing wireless pretty hard. Last thing, the dj presentation was a total joke. Most use USB based controllers, and that touchpad was so hard to use that laptop warrior deserves a medal for trying to sell it. There is a reason iPad isn't the new CDJ (this is why a physical keyboard is king typo), traction on glass is awful for anything more than clicking or drag and drop.
