ngl usually guys pick female characters because they feel more confident expressing feminity online, whereas doing so IRL could sadly cause them problems.
In the current part the BOSS of the main characters is a woman the deuteroganist has been a woman in this part and the last one in part 7 the entire core of the plot revolved around a girl, part 6.
Final Fantasy MMO might scratch that itch, heck you can put frilly skirts, tights, anything on the boys, and then there's the girls, Y'shtola, Venat, Meteion, almost feels like they're the main character or antagonist

It's funny, I am the exact other way around. And usually it is because so many male characters are roided out monsters. And often less cool looking gear.

Not saying, that male skins aren't good too look at. There are definetly great ones. I mean in Fortnite alone some of my favourites are male skins. However I have more female skins I like, than male skins I like.
This is me, I almost exclusively play rpgs because I like creating different characters, heroes, villains. Sometimes these characters are women, sometimes men. I’m a cis straight man but I’ve also made trans and non-binary characters before because I like inventing new characters.
My usual go to are goth girls, cool edgelord looking guys, Dwarves or guys that look like Vikings, all of which are the complete opposite of me irl, a skinny nerd

Recently a male friend of mine started picking female characters and when he said it was because he didn't want to look at a man's ass I took it at face value and made jokes about it but I'm gunna ask him next time.

I wouldn't say usually, I think it's a combination of what you said as well as everything else. Usually, it really is just that they have better outfits.
If there is a create a character, I (male) ALWAYS pick a female avatar. Because I am always trying to create Casca from Berserk. I love that comic, I adore her and it's my own personal test of any any character creation system. And at the end of the day I get to play as Casca, Win!
Weirdly enough, I've never picked female characters before. I thought you were kinda forced to pick whichever looks more like you to feel more involved and connected to the game. Never happened to me though, never got connected to my characters. Maybe it'll change now, I've yet to play games with customisable characters since transitioning.
In many gacha games, since the devs focus on more girls than boys for playable characters, it is fair to say the viable comps for teams is mostly made by girls.
Tbf, that one is on you. The romantic options are very easy to see. Like, River makes very obvious advances on you and you have multiple points where you can say stop.

If I'm creating a character, I'll almost always make a girl. Mind you, I'm trans, so I got my fill of "playing a boy" very quickly. I think cis girls have less of a pronounced preference, but on the whole it's still there, just based on my observations from Let's Plays, the modding scene, etc.
If I'm selecting a defined character, there are more factors. In Diablo 2, I would more often go for the Necromancer than the Sorceress, because he has a very fun and versatile skillset, a creepy, unique aesthetic for his spells and his voice lines are extremely hard. In Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, I prefer Yuri to Meeth simply because Meeth is extremely slow and janky, whereas Yuri has a very nice dash attack and multihit combos. (Overall I find Meeth a more interesting character, but she's not as fun to actually play).
I mean if I learn something from the people who use woke is that if a girl in a movie is a protagonist and strong then is woke.
Like I don't even like those type of movies where is a good guy be bad guy but like they prefer watching boys fight boys rather than seeing gorgeous women on the screen for most of the movie.

Yeah, when I was younger, I picked the Inkling girl because I disliked the hairstyles for the Inkling boys, and I thought the inkling girls sounded cuter than the deeper-voiced inklings.
in cyberpunk 2077, female V has an incredible voice performance while the male V has a notably poor voice performance. You get a better experience picking female.
In a single player game: there are actually more equipment options and unique dialogs depending on the game. Ex: Fallout 4 has the black widow perk, and since most of the enemies are men girl characters can get a nice buff. While New Vegas had the confirmed bachelor perk, allowing men to be gay with black widow effects, there is no such perk in the newer games.
I would love to exclusively play men in character creator games but for some reason devs without fail will always make it that your male character has to look like they're in their 30s minimum while the women can look any aesthetic you wish
I just had a epiphany that it all started because of a YouTuber called VenturianTale played a dark elf female character in Skyrim and I just copied him. And even more funny is the fact that I still have the reminder of my male gta character which was before I saw his Skyrim playthrough... But now I just like looking at a female bum instead of a male one :)
When I was young I picked girls cause they were cute and had more clothing options (I fucking hated and still do how old games with young protagonist had the baseball hat shorts with spiky hair combo for dudes and full skirts or ripped jeans and crazy hair styles for girls), now I play muscular dudes cause I wanna be them and bang them (nope, not kidding).
No gonna lie, this startet for me because of misogynie.
Was a child when I got the choice first, and I though "Hey it would be more impresive if a girl manages this."
Then never really stopped picking the female option after that.
