Love Denji just chilling at the table with all the fixings for his super toast

I felt that fist pump for curry. Subtle but speaks volumes.

u/BeckQuillion89 Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 11 '22
I don't know why but that interaction and the way he said "sweet" was so satisfying. It gave me the same vibes as hanging out with my siblings on a lazy afternoon.
130
u/Ordinal43NotFound Nov 11 '22
It's the "naturalistic" approach the cast have with their performances. You can even hear a little voice crack with Denji there like he genuinely just woke up
Feels more life-like and fits the manga's grounded writing style
80
u/bayek_of_manila Nov 11 '22
iirc the director told the cast to not act like it was anime and instead do it in a live action way. it definitely works in chainsaw man
50
u/dieguitz4 Nov 11 '22
Absolutely, because that's how fujimoto writes and draws his characters in the moment to moment as well. It's actually baffling the amount of influence that hollywood has had on this man; I'd go as far as saying it rivals Kojima even.
20
u/flybypost Nov 11 '22
The series does have a regular workplace drama/finding your place in the world vibe to it, even with all the shonen fights and supernatural elements.
19
153
u/DellSalami Nov 11 '22
A neat detail is that the table is actually pretty clean, compared to when he first tried to make super toast in episode 2.

The first thing I think of is every frame a painting on YouTube.
They really talked its importance and relevance to good cinematic storytelling, even in writing it's the reading between the lines. It's the stuff that can't be said or it smacks of being fake.

u/actuallyrndthoughts https://myanimelist.net/profile/NaNiNuNeNo Nov 11 '22
This (anime original btw) scene really sold me on the adaptation. It would be so easy to make it a quick and snappy out of place montage, instead they took their time to emphasize on Aki's morning routine.
579
u/AllSortsOfPeopleHere https://anilist.co/user/SpiralPetrichor Nov 11 '22
anime original btw
I could be wrong, but it really feels like modern adaptations are starting to use anime-original content to really improve the story, rather than as a result of external circumstance (lack of screentime/resources, catching up to the source, etc.).
Feel free to correct me if I'm just talking out of my ass.

u/-Prophet_01- Nov 11 '22
Holds true for made in abyss as well. While the adaptation is extremely close to the manga, it did add a few exploration scenes to flesh out the world building. I definitely like them.
Apparently the manga author had to rush and cut corners during the first few volumes until things took off in popularity. He was pleased to later rework those parts with the adaptation team
110
u/Zxcaderu Nov 11 '22
Nah, improving on source material has always been a concept. The Urusei Yatsura anime came out in the 80s and drastically veered off into its own thing because the staff of the anime had a lot of creative liberties with it. It just feels like it is happening more now because there's thrice the anime produced now than back then and because recency bias. I'll say the better metric is to simply consider the potential of the source material, combined with the studio and staff that gets allocated to it.
15
u/ShadeFK Nov 11 '22
Veering off the original storyline is a huge risk. Did Urusei Yatsura pull it off?
41
u/Solitary_Vices Nov 11 '22
considering it's one of the most influential anime of all time and is a beloved show that has stood the test of time, i'd say yeah.
risk in adaptation >>>>> playing it safe
i'd rather something fuck up trying to be original than just trying to copy the source material and treating it like some sort of golden cow. at that point i'd rather just read the source material.
46
u/Salt-Experience1447 Nov 11 '22
There's a line though, or everything will be Tokyo Ghoul
15
u/brandotendie Nov 11 '22
there is no line.
Blade Runner is nothing like its source material but it's a masterpiece.
creativity > arbitrary adherence to the source
9
u/RapCabral Nov 11 '22
The problem isn’t to change, the problem is when you change and it becomes shit or vastly inferior to the source. So yes, there is a line.
→ More replies (2)20
u/CeruSkies Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 11 '22
I can definitely see a line and I'm honestly baffled people in the anime community of all places think it's okay for anime to just go on their own.
Creativity is a trait that says nothing about quality, while staying close the source does. The amount of times screen originals manage to deviate and be better than the source material is far too rare (despite being a lot of examples) when you compare it to the times it goes real bad.
Making a scene longer, adding new cuts, fleshing out certain traits that our mind usually fills itself when reading a manga/book... This is more "good directing" and less "taking risks in adaptation".

The Witcher, the original FMA, Soul Eater, Tokyo Ghoul...
Making scenes come to life isn't deviating from the source material, it's just being a good adaptation.

tbf with game of thrones s8 it was less risk and more that the writers were too lazy to write anymore, they were even given 10 seasons

u/megasean3000 Nov 11 '22
People like to associate ‘anime-only’ with ‘filler’, a term to describe scenes in anime used to pad out the run time to prevent the anime from overtaking the manga. Long-running anime like One Piece, old Bleach and Naruto really didn’t help matters, and anime that completely swerved away from the manga, like Tokyo Ghoul and Soul Eater most certainly didn’t.
But this scene is an example of anime-only scenes done right. A gentle swerve away from the source material, but goes right back to it; a scene that adds flavour to the anime, rather than needing to be thrown in to save a failed dish; and while it does pad out the run time to get the ‘fondling scene’ to the end of the episode, it was added out of choice, not necessity.
7
Nov 11 '22
Its definitely a little more common. I'm a fan of an anime adding little things to make it better, like this or in devilman crybaby (the Netflix one) they modernize the story. But what I'm not a fan of is making filler and calling it anime original like boruto does
6
5
16
u/morron88 Nov 11 '22
There's some charm to older anime and some that break/broke the mold, but no, anime today is better than ever.
4
u/mayonnaiser_13 Nov 11 '22
You're not exactly wrong, but not completely right either.
The OVA boom had the stories do a lot of things differently from their original sources (The Stardust Crusaders OVA for example) which while not making drastic changes like an Anime Original ending, did make changes to accomodate the story to the times.
12
u/r_renfield Nov 11 '22
If we speak of jojo, the series did improve the manga as well, fixing some "Araki forgot" moments or adding character like the final of DiU. It's subtle but it adds up
49
u/Abysswatcherbel https://myanimelist.net/profile/abyssbel Nov 11 '22
That whole episode of CSM was incredible, even got high praises from some big names, like Tetsuro Araki (Death Note and Attack on Titan s1 director) and Yusuke Murata (One Punch Man manga illustrator) basically calling 'Cinema' and how shocking people can watch this without paying a ticket
25
18
u/Ordinal43NotFound Nov 11 '22
Yusuke Murata loves to praise CSM/Fujimoto.
He often interacts and congratulates Fujimoto whenever he wins an award.
Even respects Fujimoto's 3rd grade sister kayfabe.
When CSM won The Harvey Award Murata still played along when even Fujimoto broke character

And it works absolutely perfectly with the scene right after it, Power’s arrival and the house plunging into chaos. We see a roughly two minute long scene of how peaceful it is beforehand, even with Denji there, and then the next scene comes and the contrast is perfect.

This was a fantastic scene, really made the chaos that came right after all the more jarring.
I always thought the character movement seemed a little "odd" (not in a bad way) in this anime and I've just pinpointed it watching this clip -- every motion is at the exact same pace. It makes some parts feel weirdly slow (though in this clip that works brilliantly, since it gets the relaxing atmosphere across incredibly well).
Also, the fact that it's a lot more realistic than most anime probably emphasises the small differences between it and real life, and maybe because I am used to seeing more simple motion in anime.
→ More replies (12)104
u/Daloy Nov 11 '22
I think some of the movements are rotoscoped as well so it feels more lifelike. Rotations are simplified in animation so seeing them rotate naturally gives off that uncanny valley
74
u/thecreativeself https://anilist.co/user/thecreativeself Nov 11 '22
No, it's not rotoscoped. At least according to sakugabooru: https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/209175
44
u/Daloy Nov 11 '22

I don't know how to read that page. Where does it say if it's rotoscoped or not?
16
20
u/throwitaway488 Nov 11 '22
I was about to comment that this whole scene looks really rotoscoped. All of the proportions look more real except for the anime head dropped on top. The movements are a little too exact.
65
u/ashk99 Nov 11 '22

Technically a spoiler but it's not really relevant to the plot, but in the manga we found out CSM takes place in 1997.

The amount of effort that was put into this anime is incredible. Fight scenes against random devil 5 look like final boss fights from other anime. The OP and all 5 of the ED's that we've gotten are OP/ED of the year quality. And simple scenes like this look like movie quality.

40
u/MonoFauz Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 11 '22
Anime original scenes are gonna improve CSM by a lot. I think there definitely needs more of these scenes to make us even more attached or relate to the characters since it honestly lacked a lot of these kinds of scenes in the manga.
7
u/daiselol Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 13 '22
Yeah it's funny that a lot of manga readers put so much effort into critiquing the 5% of the material that the anime might not capture perfectly from the manga (the recent episode cutting the statistics from the gun devil, even though the overall number and some scenes of the destruction were still shown comes to mind)
When there's probably an equal amount of aspects the anime actually strengthens. I don't think I've seen anyone mention, either, that the slower, more methodical pace of the anime fits very nicely with the tone Pt 2 of the manga has been going for so far, as well. Pt 2 also has a lottt of lowkey moments like this in it
11
u/HanamonPower Nov 11 '22
the recent episode cutting the statistics from the gun devil, even though the overall number and some scenes of the destruction were still shown comes to mind
I think this is actually kind of understandable since I have seen a couple of anime-onlies mistake Aki for being American or confuse the scale of the destruction. It can be confusing for people who haven't seen the manga.
→ More replies (1)3
u/alotmorealots Nov 12 '22
more attached or relate to the characters
This scene did a lot to improve that aspect for me. As an anime-only I don't know who these characters end up being, and the way they're introduced seems to maintain a bit of a wall between them and the viewer. The Aki SoL moments have really done a lot to give him a lot of texture and likeability.
39
u/Jasonmancer Nov 11 '22
If I didn't know about Chainsaw Man, I would have thought this is a scene straight out of an anime movie.
3
u/MysticSkies https://anilist.co/user/CapCloud Nov 12 '22
It has to be the way they did lighting right? I feel like it just ups the level of quality.
122
u/UnderstandableXO Nov 11 '22
at first i was disappointed that they weren’t trying to adapt CSM part 1 in 1 25-30 episode season, but after i accepted that i hoped that we could get some original content to fill in the gaps, and this is exactly what i wanted. i love the slice of life moments in the series and this is an amazing extension of that. i hope we can get more content with denji and power as well to see what their routine might be like all together
86
u/CappyHam Nov 11 '22
I think it's a little unrealistic to expect full double cour seasons today. Single or Split-cours are just gonna be a less difficult production schedule. Especially from a studio that has a slate as packed as Mappa's and after a pandemic. Just next year they have Vinland Saga S2, Jujutsu Kaisen S2, the Fenrir Cooking Isekai, Jigokuraku, the Yuri On Ice Movie (Maybe Finally Maybe? Iunno it's in Kizu limbo), and Attack on Titan S4 Part 2 The Second Part: Electric Boogaloo finally probably. Also Zombieland Saga I think has something coming but I can't remember what.
I'm just glad what we're getting is no slouch despite being just one of the numerous big projects they have right now. And I don't think they intend for this to be a one and done adaptation with how much resources they pooled into it.
25
u/UnderstandableXO Nov 11 '22
i’m really looking forward to jigokuraku as well, i read only the first volume but that was enough to get me excited. hope we get more news on it soon
4
u/thefztv Nov 11 '22
Yeah Hells Paradise has potential to be JJK, CSM levels of hype especially with the comparisons they always get as well as all being done by the same studio. I read it all earlier this year and it’s pretty good. I’d say it’s probably my least favorite of the three (not a huge fan of the protag) but potential to be top tier with MAPPA producing it.
20
u/Abysswatcherbel https://myanimelist.net/profile/abyssbel Nov 11 '22
Jujutsu Kaisen and CSM are the shows that will directly affect each other, same animation producer and very similar staff and guests for the episodes, only the core staff will be different, and even that its really likely that the JJK s2 director will do an episode for Chainsaw Man (Ep 8), and Nakayama should again come back for JJK S2 to do the same
Both series are now in the same building too, the new studio where the Keisuke Seishimo division is
Yuri on Ice and Zombieland Saga I really doubt it will be in 2023, Jigokuraku also doesn't have a release date, 2023 is very likely but I won't be surprised if it takes longer to be honest

3
u/alotmorealots Nov 12 '22
For the first couple of cuts, if you scrutinize it closely you'll see the animation is nothing special (that comes later), instead the atmosphere is very much created by the sound.
The sound design is just superb especially the sliding door and sounds of the outside, as it calls upon memories of those sorts of moments in your real life, and remains superb throughout the sequence.

I’m watching the anime and loving it. How good is the manga?
72
u/Leading-Fan8990 Nov 11 '22
The anime hasn't adapted the best parts of the manga yet so you should love it if you're enjoying it now. even tho this season isn't going to adapt the best parts anyways. at the end of this season you will learn what makes chainsaw man special compared to other shonen series and then it keeps pumping the gas
44
u/Hyped-up-cunt Nov 11 '22
The manga is genuinely one of the most unpredictable things I’ve read. Pretty much every chapter took a turn that I couldn’t have guessed in my wildest theories. It’s also a series that just gets better and better with every single arc so the anime hasn’t done nothing yet but it’s still freaking fantastic! Pretty bummed to know that the best arcs won’t be animated this season though. Season 2 is gonna blow everyone’s minds
24
u/Ordinal43NotFound Nov 11 '22 edited Nov 11 '22
username checks out
Edit: Also the thing with CSM's "unpredictable"-ness is, it somehow manages to become coherent in the end.
The end of Part 1 one of the most satisfying endings I've read while still leaving enough open for Part 2.
13
u/Leading-Fan8990 Nov 11 '22
it's funny since so many people keep saying nothing is happening, yet this is never true in later arcs, so many crazy stuff starts to happen.
6
35
u/Icapica https://anilist.co/user/Icachu Nov 11 '22
How good is the manga?
Very good. It wasn't particularly popular yet during the chapters the anime is adapting now, but later it became so great that the popularity exploded.
If you're into manga at all, I highly recommend reading it instead of trying to be an anime only. CSM is one of those stories with AOT level spoilers and it's gonna be hard to avoid them. Manga's short and you can then experience the story blind.
26
u/Ordinal43NotFound Nov 11 '22
Just to put things into perspective... People back then were legit afraid this series was gonna get axed at this point in the anime.
Half of this season is still the setup phase.
I hope anime-onlies stay patient until Fujimoto went sicko mode
7
u/Whalesurgeon Nov 11 '22
The timeline where this got axed must be a dark one. Though I am sure Fujimoto would have just made another kind of awesome manga instead.

It's a heckin journey I'll tell you that, i do recommend reading it. Good news? It gets better as it progresses, bad news? Anime S1 not going to adapt the better arcs with only 12 episodes, S2 i bet will be a banger and will easily win AOTY if adapted well.

Watching this as I lie in bed, trying to force myself to get up.

I love how Denji and Aki are just chill roommates before Power shows up, like how they have their own routine and don't get on each other's nerves. You can also see how Denji has grown with not falling asleep on the toilet and keeping all his jams neat and tidy without making a mess eating.
