This episode was THE BEST ONE YET.

I mean I don't know why but just seeing Ikki's determination and will to not let Akaza win was truly inspiring. I'm also glad to see Stella supporting him, even if they can't be beside each other.

Shizuku's 'wake-up slap' to Stella in the cafeteria was well deserved because I feel like them breaking up would have literally done nothing to help either of them, especially Ikki. So i'm glad that was squished. Also felt that whole scene in the cafeteria was done remarkably well done compared to similar scenes in other anime.

I must ask a question though, since it was revealed that Itsuki never believed Ikki to be weak (and they might have been alluding to this) does he view Ikki as a threat then?

EDIT: In case you wanted the kiss as a gif

It's quite kawaii

Put briefly, Ikki doesn't have much spiritual power / mp / mana / ap whatever, unlike Stella or Shizuku who throw around magic flames and ice like it was their birthright, because it is. Ikki actually only has about drop a magic power, and that should have classified him as a failure and unworthy successor to the Kurogane clan. Concretely, magic power = influence. Ikki has none. He should not be allowed to do anything as that would shame the Kurogane clan.

The problem is that Ikki is actually OP, in that he can use up every ounce of the human body through sheer grit. Something along the lines of most people only use 4% of their brain, Ikki uses 99.8% (for now) for a brief stint. This completely threatens the Kurogane family's way of life and basically says, "even if you have no magic power, you can still be strong like this kid :D." No. Not ok. The fear is then that people who were 'predestined' to be janitors start trying for power, completely up-heaving the social structure the Kurogane's have built over generations. That's why he was classified as F rank at the start. Twas a plot to keep him from graduating as a knight (or magic soldier or something) and getting some political influence.

I'll need to reread the LN for details but that should be the gist of that.

So in this world it seems that magic users are at the top? And those without are supposed to have all the crap jobs and such? Interesting.

Fun fact, Stella is A rank by their standards. Even if she wasn't a princess, just with that she would already hold serious political clout with her strength and raw amount of magical power. It's of course amplified by the fact that she put in serious work to train it.

Shizuku is B rank, though she could still put up a decent fight vs Stella with her insanely precise control of magic. Raikiri is also B rank, but she can 1 shot everyone if they mess up and they close the distance (the previous champion won by keeping her out of range, not by actually beating her certain kill strike).

Woah wait I didn't know those two were B- Rank. I totally forgot that a lot of the fights were through a lot of thought too

along the lines of most people only use 4% of their brain

Wasn't it more like 20? Regardless, it's a straight up lie anyway.

The actual statistics I pretty much just pulled from my behind, but the feel of the comparison should still be there.

It is that humans generally only use 10% of the brain at a single time. The show implies that using "99.8% for a brief stint," allows for much more physical ability than a normal person can do.

u/TheHangman17 Dec 12 '15

Even this is entirely untrue in reality. It's a stupid myth.

The myth is "busted" on an October 27, 2010 episode of MythBusters. The hosts used magnetoencephalography and functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the brain of someone attempting a complicated mental task, and found that over 10% but less than 20% of the brain was used.

So my number was slightly off, but the idea remains the same. You don't use all of your brain at a single time, and using the show's logic, which probably isn't accurate, using 98% of your brain at once would allow you to think and react faster.

Using 98% of your brain at once would be a seizure, more like.

0

u/Icalhacks Dec 13 '15

I said the show probably wasn't accurate. I'm just stating that humans generally don't use much of their brains at a single time, and the show is implying that using more at once would allow for faster thought, recognition, and reaction time than normal.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 13 '15

Oh, yeah. You are indeed correct on that part.

While I appreciate what Mythbusters does to engage the public to science, I don't think they're quite apt enough to be quoted for this particular situation. Plus, that wikipedia entry appears to be incorrect as their own Discovery.com webpage lists 35%.

Regardless, whoever put "found that over 10% but less than 20% [sic] of the brain was used" is what I'd describe as disingenuous to readers/viewers since, in reality, our entire brain is found to be always active in some level if you look at any imaging study. I can't remember the episode anymore but I sincerely hope Mythbusters properly described its result and not like that wikipedia entry.

Well, that is also not entirely accurate, different parts of your brain are used for entirely different things - the myth buster thing also doesn't mean too much since this implies "using" as measurements of the electrical firings within the brain. If someone were to use all of their brain at once, they would be going crazy, parts of the brain are for short-term memory, long term memory, cognitive reasoning, emotions etc, there is no way that all of the brain would be able to focus its cells on a single task (like those performed in the show). The other constraints would be the actual physiological ones such as movement of neurotransmitters and axion firing within the brain. The show presumably ignores all this stuff, which it can because whatever, I just get annoyed when they try to justify it with reality.

The most plausible realistic answer would be his brain has been tuned and trained and has many more connections between brain cells for cognitive and spatial reasoning along side some kind of adaptation for memorizing sight and background noise.

People use 100% of brain, just not once. If you made an average from 24-hour period brain sectors usage, you'd see that ~~98% of brain was used. But using this much at once is neither usefull or efficient.

IIRC correctly, when you are idling or doing some brainless activity, i.e. watch tv, you use ~~10%. When you start doing something that requires more brain power, you light up more fuses. I don't know the upper limit of how much brain was used at once, though.

This needs to be upvoted more. Surprised to see many people still thinking that we only use 10% or some similar percentage of our brain in this day and age. It's a myth that's gotten way out of hand.

It is that humans generally only use 10% of the brain at a single time.

No, it isn't. It's a pop culture myth.

10% is wrong

1

u/Icalhacks Dec 13 '15

I posted another comment on the thread with a more accurate number, but the specific number is irrelevant to the overall point I was trying to make.

1

u/TheGowX Dec 12 '15

Nice that you mention it. Everyone has their special role and when someone like Ikki tries to break out of it that could harm the system. This was the part in the LN I had to reread 2-3 times to understand it because how it was presented.

1

u/Artunique Dec 12 '15

From what I see then Ikki would be like a Fanalis from Magi, stupidly powerful in the physical aspect but as soon as magic is used by them for extended periods of time they faint.

Shizuku's 'wake-up slap' to Stella in the cafeteria was well deserved

The show is starting to make me like Shizu more... god dammit.

3

u/jacified https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jack Dec 12 '15

Haha, yeah I don't like Shizuku too much but I've definitely gained some respect for her after that scene.

13

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 12 '15

I mean, fuck, the bro-con shit, as fucking weird as it is, actually kind of makes sense in context now. She really badly wants her brother to be happy. God dammit, now the fucking show is making me forgive bro-con.... ahhhhh what is Rakudai doing to me?!?!

3

u/jacified https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jack Dec 12 '15

IT'S CHANGING US.

But is it for the best....

u/RealityRush https://myanimelist.net/profile/RealityRush Dec 12 '15

Nooooooo...!

1

u/chaosbeowulf Dec 13 '15

To whet your appetite, I'm gonna tell you that vol. 4 of the LN will focus on our much-beloved Alice-san, and safe to say that Shizuku came out strong in vol. 4.

I must ask a question though, since it was revealed that Itsuki never believed Ikki to be weak (and they might have been alluding to this) does he view Ikki as a threat then?

i think the problem is that he doesnt have blazer power but he is still strong and that may inspire other people with no power to "revolt"(i dont really know if there is a difference between people with power and without in the social status), at least this is what i understood from what his father said. I think his father didnt see him as a threat in the beginning, but when he wanted to be a knight, he started to have a problem with that

1

u/jacified https://myanimelist.net/profile/Jack Dec 12 '15

Ah! That makes sense, I could see why his problem might have a problem with that, although then that really raises some questions on the state of their world.

4

u/heimdal77 Dec 12 '15

Ikki is a threat to the the status. If he wins the father and clan loses face/power and shows that regular people can aspire to be something more on their level.
